3 out of 5 eggsFast, works well - when cool enough

Pros: Very fast - excellent performance for the price; easy to install, and software easy to work with. Should easily meet my performance needs for years to come.

Cons: Heat-related issues cropped up in just under 3 months of use. Automatic fan control isn't sufficient to keep the card cool enough; have to manually bump up the fan speed to around 40% for consistent cooling, and it's slowly degraded from there. Lots of forum posts from other users seeing similar issues, leading to conjecture about either a driver-related issue (drivers not adjusting fan speed properly), as well as some users with fans that are failing WAY prematurely

Automatic fan control puts temperature in mid 70's; (well beneath the "danger" area, and apparently a relatively normal range for the card) - manual fan control of around 40% puts the card into 40's and lower 50's.

Other Thoughts: I'm contacting ASUS for an RMA next week; manual fan control is working, but since the card continues to have issues even at the lower temperatures, I'm not taking any chances.

I've not overclocked this card (or my system) - the card is plenty fast to where I feel there's no point for the games I'm playing (L4D, TF2, Fallout 3).

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice...

Pros: Easy to install in Vista 64 bit OS, I like the dual slot cooling, although my case is big (Silverstone F01B)...
Haven't taken it to the races yet but am sure it will perform as advertised.

Cons: where'd they go?? None on Newegg and none on Asus' website...was going to buy one more for crossfire.

Other Thoughts: Download current drivers from AMD/ATI's website....make life easier!

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING CARD!!!

Pros: very fast card, runs very cool(despite what people think of these oem coolers, they are very good cooler.) mine idle at 42C @ 30% fan speed and 55C during gaming.

Cons: bios level fan control is weak!

Other Thoughts: love this card.. cant wait to get another, but newegg seems to not carry them as of late.

dont understand why people want these cards with the garbage aftermarket coolers on them, imo they arent half as good as the oem... they are garbage!

5 out of 5 eggsNo Complaintz

Pros: Where do I start? Even the packaging is a wonderful surprise, and the Asus leather the mouse pad was a bonus for sure and made my brother jealous. Great support from the asus website w up-to-date drivers :) 1GDDR5 means you get what you pay for! Makes my 37" scream MAXIMUM RESOLUTION very proudly. Sits proudly in my M3A79-T mobo.

Cons: I only bought one? Not a con but I fear the 4870x2 because of heat issues; I don't want a GPU capable of heating my room. I figured I would just wait a few months and buy myself another one of these.

Other Thoughts: M3A79-T DELUXE
ASUS 4870 1G GDDR5
Phenom X4 9950
ABS Tagan BZ 900 (w/christmas tree-like modular cabling)
(4X) 0CZ Reaper 2G HPC 1066's. (8GB Total)
Antec 1200 (BEAUTIFUL case w/Lots of ROOOOOOOOOM)

5 out of 5 eggsPenzelbub's Update

Pros: here's an update for people contepmplating getting this card.

Cons: Turns out the OSD utility doesn't pay well with allot of games, leads to crashes. Bioshock is a definite casualty. The only way around is too uninstall it! believe me I researched it. ASUS has no answer to this issue. The good thing? CCC 8.12 works fine with this card. Well it did for me anyways. The ASUS CCC is decent, but there's no fan manual ajustment, at least on 8.10, so ones left with little choice but to go ATI CCC. I know I posited ASUS CCC being fine earlier, and it is, but hey, man yah need a fan setting, so best to go ATI now, and avoid the OSD crashes.

Other Thoughts: Still one heck of a card. I would still buy in a heart beat. Though the price has gone down exceedingly since I bought it, and the DK cooler cards have been more available. Get a DK , this card doesn't run hot at all for me, 30% = 45c, 45-50% = never >40c load, so can't go worng still, but the DK even looks cooler. lol.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Video Card

Pros: Amazingly fast.
HDMI audio is great! 7.1 audio w/ 96hz and 24bit = nice from video card.
Easier to fit aftermarket cooler on then 4850, though it could be the new version of the cooler."ARCTIC COOLING ACCELS1 Rev 2 VGA Cooler"
Did I mention fast?

Cons: Audio drivers are a PAIN to get working right. 2.1 is not acceptable.
Runs hot/loud without aftermarket cooler.
Uses lots of power.
No physics technology yet =(

Other Thoughts: Great card! I would buy another and SLI if I had cash flying out of my pockets. Though Im not sure why I would need to bother with SLI yet.

HDMI audio is great, all boards/manufacturers should be doing this now. Saves a slot and puts that extra computing power to use.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Impressed

Pros: Very fast. I have tried, Warhammer online, Halflife 2, CS:S, LOTRO, ET:QW, and a few other games. My LCD Maxes at 1280x1024, and so at that resolution, all of the listed games can be played at maximum settings. I'm hoping to get fc2 and crisis to test it.

Cons: non, other than I don't have 2 yet :P

Other Thoughts: Asus PT6 deluxe, 6 gigs corsair ddr3, Core i7 2.66, 3 Seagate 500gig sata II drives in Raid 5, Corsair 750 watt PSU, Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Perfect! runs Crysis on Very High settings at 20-30 FPS with x8 AA. Runs cool and after installing included software (Smartdoctor) fan only gets loud when gaming (I have a headset so it don't hear it anyway.)

Cons: Its big and takes to 6pin PCI power connectors. It is still fairly loud. Not a dual GPU =P

Other Thoughts: The cons aren't really big issues plan on buying another one to crossfire in a few months. Idles at about 40c under load around 50-60c.

My Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+, 2.8GHz
(2x2GB)4028MB RAM 4-4-4-15 2.2v
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1G
Windows XP Professional/Vista

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Yes it can play Crysis! all jokes aside this card is awesome! using the ATI Catalyst im able to OC this from 750 core 900 memory to 790core & 980 memory 100% stable. any further will require a bios flash. card runs very cool (see other thoughts)

Cons: none!

Other Thoughts: fan comes stock set at 20% if i remember correctly. with ambient temps at around 70F in my house, load temps dont go above 55c even after hours of gaming. bumping the fan speed up to about 35% which is the point just before the fan really gets loud, temps never go above 45c. at 100% the fan is ridiculously loud and blows so much air its ridiculous!

4 out of 5 eggssolid performer

Pros: Great card, runs GRID, GTREvo, RACE07, and rfactor without breaking a sweat. (1900x1200)
COD4/5 run great at max settings at 1900x1200
CSsource... eats it up.

Cons: shoulda waited for the asus model with the better cooler and quiter fan, this thing can get loud.
also, price dropped 30.00 since I bought it... but it's a video card, what do you except

Other Thoughts: Might buy the other asus model with the ASUS cooler/fan and sell this one to a friend
