it works
- Pros: Nice price on blackfriday special, can't go into much detail, havn't been able to test it fully with all optoins yet.
- Cons: heatsink blocks lower pci ports, seems to be a bit excessive for a low to mid level card but its getting to be a normal thing
- Other Thoughts: would be nice if they could corrdinate with mobo designers to not block pci ports.
Rocks for the price
- Pros: Price/performance, good (but not excellent) game play at 1680x1050, simple power requirements (pulls through PCIe rather than separate cable(s))
- Cons: Still get flack from friend who dropped 3 bills plus on 5xxx card
- Other Thoughts: A gaming enthusiast would scoff at this card's performance, but for mainstream gaming and videos, I've seen nothing to beat the price/performance. The Linux drivers from AMD's web site installed and worked flawlessly.
High Quality 4670 Card
- Pros: The professional reviews show that the 4670 cards have the highest performence per dollar and per watt, and give the best performance among the low watt cards that do not require their own power plug. This card stands out among the 4670s as having a high quality voltage regulation circut. The GPU has a two phase circut with three mosfets per phase, ferrite chokes and plenty of solid polymer capacitors. The heatsink and fan are well designed. The annodized aluminum heatsink by itself weighs 87 grams and with the fan weighs about 135 grams, so it's quite substantial. On my motherboard (Asus M3A78-EM), the fan on this card blows air over the South Bridge heatsink and reduces the SB temperatures by about 5 degrees C (according to the temp sensors on a Zalman fan controller). You don't get this benifit from the two-slot video cards, and it's a significant advantage since on my motherboard the South Bridge is the hottest part.
- Cons: The heatsink and fan are a custom product provided to ASUS by Y.S. Tech. Replacement fans are unavailable (I inquired by email on the Y.S. Tech website). The fan is an odd size, between 60 and 80 mm, so it would be very hard to modify something to fit in its place. So when the fan wears out, the heatsink becomes junk and needs to be replaced. There is no fan speed control. It runs at 100%, but I don't count this as a real con because I can not hear the fan above the sound of my CPU fan (a relatively quiet Zallman CNPS 8700).
- Other Thoughts: Peak power use can be around 70 watts. At idle, the card powers down to about 20 watts. It uses 9 watts more than my motherboard's integrated HD 3200 GPU. After removing the thermal adhesive between the heatsink and GPU and replacing it with arctic silver 5, GPU temps fell 2-3 degrees to 23-24 at idle and the high twenties to just over 30C at load (with ambient case temp 20-21C). I don't overclock. I find the stock performance is enough for the few games I play ( of which CoH is probably the most demanding on the GPU). In my opinion, this is a great basic gaming card for a low power system on a budget.
