4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Fast. Looks awsome. Unbelievable fan/cooling capability. Bought this baby for a new i7 system, was in a great combo. No playability issues, no warping issues. Using a single Thermaltake toughpower 850.

Cons: Stuck it in a Coolermaster HAF 932. The fan had a surge or loping rpm whn at idle whn I first got it. Now that the summer is here and my room temp is up, its gone. Thinking the HAF fan and card fan were actually keeping the card too cool.

Other Thoughts: This build was done for me professionally. HAF 932, Thermaltake toughpower 850, ASUS rampage formula 3, i7 950, corsair dominator 1600(tried patriot first), WD 1tb sata3, windows 7 64 ultimate. Crysis 2 on max settings, ran with ZERO slowdowns or stuttering. :)

5 out of 5 eggsaddition to 2/23 review

Pros: As I say this is an addition. And I did not get my cards at newegg, but they are what they are. for the purpose of extreamly high resolution on MULTIPLE moitors they work very well.... but; they do lack 3D and they do have some stability issues if you don't set your bios just so.

Cons: Too many people are having trouble with these cards. It's generally NOT the cards; except in the rare instance of a DOA or a QC error. However. the power they take is insane. there are some e-tailers that build machines like Main GEAR to name one... they won't sell two w/o their most powerfull PSU, and I expect that there are some bios "locks" that are put in place. where the voltages for the PCIe lanes are tweaked. (thats what I had to do) Also it seems strange to me that sucsess with these is 90% of the time found on an ASUS Rampage III extreame and a 1500W PSU;

Other Thoughts: When I spoke with ASUS about these cards, it was almost as if the tech was trying to talk me out of getting two. "almost" they mentioned little perfomance gain for the hassle of two. $, time... More time will tell. I took mine and set them aside in wait for the Maximus Extreame IV and a 2600K. If you use ATI a lot you know that CPU's have a LOT to do with performance. Not saying a clocked 990x will get creamed by a 2600k but @ 5GHz and the P67 chipset it has me way curious. because I can't get two of these to beat 3 580's point for point. $ for $. If any one else has two of these and a 990x on air lets be fair. I love to hear your story; other thoughts; It is near impossable to buy three GTX HC2 or some SC 580's there are limits on the sale. WHY are these so easy to get? Limited edition? went away so that is another thought

5 out of 5 eggsTo N/A Rampage formula 1500W

Pros: When powered correctly and installed on clean OS they do what they are ment to do well
multi monitor extreame high resolution these cards fit a very particular need, and do it well; two of them may cause more trouble than boost

Cons: I suppose some may call something(s) a "con" if one dosent really study. these cards are not "normal" if one plans a build around these cards and plans for two they consider a single rail PSU or 2; exact same make/model for same capacitor charge discharge, and the amps these things take. Also a blank HDD; for some reason if you install these in a system 50% of the time it will not hold unless it is a CLEAN OS install and [depending MB/bios]-PCIe settings. There are reviews that made a point about these cards in-ablility to CF after realease; noting that pluging two in just shut things down BSOD; some sited drivers; others noted BSOD before OS install; goes back to MB; PSU and then Drivers; in some cases there were better results when using 1 ares and 1 5870 rather than 2 ares; contact ASUS about actual warentee date; see below

Other Thoughts: saw mention of a 1500W PSU probably 8 rail. 25 amps per rail; 1 for the 24 pin, 1 or two for EPS; and one for perifs; but if you want to run 2 of these; 4 8pin + 2 6 pin; sucsessful examples 1 guy; 2x ultra 1600W/MB had two extra PCIe PWR molex PSU plugs like the 4x SLI, Rampage exteameIII, saw one test: 1-Ares; Rampage exteame /w 980x; only 31xxx vantage; 3way sli 580 stock same board & cpu no need for extra PWR; 51xxx vantage; pluged in 2nd ares No POST; They take so much juice; it can work if you want to run 8 monitors all at 1920 x 1080i; no doubt they are made for a small nich in the market; If you search for the reviews they are there; I spoke with ASUS; I can't comment on that; bear in mind the actual sales rate of these cards; bear in mind they were made more like a statment than anything elase; they are very powerful; but they have to be feed like hungry animals; and / MTBF... warranty starts at the DATE OF Manufacture, not sale; customer servive NO ONE Beats EVGA

1 out of 5 eggsTo Mr know it all / non verified owner

Pros: with the special deal at the time. The mother board that came with it worked fine.
(ASUS Rampage III Formula) (4 eggs)
ASUS TECHS were very helpful and courteous (5 eggs)
Newegg RMA service people are great in my book (5 eggs)

Cons: Both cards didn't work properly. 1 egg
Just bad luck.

flaws in production happens just like in ALL electronics.
It was just very stressful after spending $1099 a piece to just have not even one of these cards not work after testing them individually one at a time!

With that said, I seriously hope no one else goes through what I did because I built my system around these cards and I was a bit heart broken. I wanted to give them another chance but I couldn't.

Other Thoughts: In reply to "Mr know it all / non verified owner".
I do thank you for your advise but...
I tried running these cards ONE AT A TIME with the ASUS Rampage III Formula board that came with them at the time. I had nothing else in the PCI-E slots or any of the other slots and no SSD either when running these with a 1500 watt PS.

I used a H.I.S. 5870 to make sure there wasn't a problem with mother board and it worked fine. The HDMI sound icons showed in window 7 once again and functioned just fine.

I then inserted the ASUS cards with ONE IN AT A TIME (not in CF} with the newest downloaded drivers to just have the same problem with each card again and again. Blue screen of death, memory dumps and no hdmi sound is what I got from each individual card. techs at ASUS walked me through every possibility they could think of to no avail. So for my stressful experience because I got 2 cards that did not function as they were supposed to. 1 egg. I wish I could of said 5 eggs but I can

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We sincerely apologize for the issues that you are experiencing with these graphics cards. Due to the way ATI Catalyst initializes the INF driver file, we have seen occurrences where the ARES would not be properly initialized. Because of this, it is best that these cards be installed on a clean OS installation with latest Catalyst drivers installed after OS installation. If you previously had other card(s) installed in your system (even if they were another 5870 variant), at the least you want to do a clean reinstall of the ATI drivers which completely removes any previously installed ATI drivers in the process. If you still have issues, please contact us at 812-282-2787 and provide case number 1172290 so that we can assist you with the RMA process and help you to resolve these issues.

Best Regards,

ASUS Product Specialist

5 out of 5 eggsTo Mr. "too many problems"

Pros: This card is two true 5870 in harmony. It was designed by ASUS as "this is what is possible"(if you realy wnat to) on it's own it can not be beat, by any other dual GPU card

Cons: Drivers were very young; Mr. "too many problems" and other reviewers most likely had other PCIe slots populated. There are only a hand full of boards that will acept this in CFX. Plus one guy said he had two SSD's in PCIe slots... probabley Revos or the like. That alone will cause problems. This card can only run correctly in a x16 slot; if you want two or if you want to run a 5870 stock 850MHz like a 3 way GPU; still slots 1 and 3 ONLY(Rampage III) can be occuplied by ANYTHING. Not just the Rampage but any board that doesn't have 2 NF200's running; like 4xsli; or ASUS WS; this is where you people had CONs: the other PCIe slots must be emty unless they are true 16x slots like the ECGA 759 with 1 NF200; I suppose the only real CON is; only 2 boards can run this in CFX and have room (not just space) to use the other slots;(excluding a 1x for sound) EVGA's 4XSLI and that ASUS WS; befcause to do so you MUST have (2) NF200's running

Other Thoughts: If you want to run this; OR 2 of them; and if you do it will tear through anything in it's class; you must not populate any slots but the slots that give you true 16x an 8x will cause trouble; stop it; slow it down, If you populate a free slot it will drop your 16x to 8x so this and one other card or just one of them and keep the other PCIe slots free except the other true 16x. It doesnt matter what you put the free slots if you do it wrong the setup just won't work. Just because the are slots available DOES NOT mean you can put Revos or what ever in them; I'd tell you more but I don't have room
