1 out of 5 eggsBenchmarked well......

Pros: Worked well for bench marking.... I originally jumped the gun and gave it 5 eggs.

Cons: Oh... where to start.
1: Crash, crash, crash
2: No support from Asus
3: Everyone has issues with it. We were told to more or less deal with it ourselves. So we tried. Some of us were able to nudge them into submission with endless hours of finding the perfect voltage and clock.
4: Was hoping for a fix by now, does not look like that will happen. This will be the last Asus card I buy.

Other Thoughts: Some people were allowed to trade it in for what I would consider lesser models in the tune of Nvidia after they RMA'd the card for over half a year. Its just a shame such a nice card went to waste.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Austin,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the graphics card. On behalf of ASUS we apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you.

Is this happening to all of the application or games? Any other unusual performance on the GPU? What is the error message? What application are you using before getting the error message? Have you tried using different cable or use other PCIe slot for the GPU?

For further technical assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me at and put case #N150766332 in the subject line for a reference. I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

Best regards,
ASUS Customer Loyalty

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great cooling.

Cons: Had artifacting, RMAed (which took 4 and a half weeks), and received another defective card.

Other Thoughts: I've been through the gambit of driver updates, reinstallations, cleanings, etc. Pop in an old 6950 and it works flawlessly.

5 out of 5 eggsThe fastest - Coolest

Pros: Keeping it short and sweet. The best/fastest Graphics card I've ever owned and I've owned many. Temp's are cool even at my stable 1250Mhz core and 1700Mhz memory overclock. Quite and very good looking. Solid.

Cons: Expensive of course. But you know that going in.

Other Thoughts: The review before me is wrong. Cant believe he gave his a 3 star because of a tiny switch that more than likely he broke. Got to look at the full picture here. 5 plus EGGS!

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The performance is what you'd expect from two 7970s and the cooling / noise level is excellent. The finish and overall appearance is very nice.

Cons: There is an extremely tiny piece of plastic that's on the top of the card which is used to swap your DVI slots from single to dual-link (enabling resolutions above 1080p on those slots at the cost of a DisplayPort slot). This piece of plastic is EXTREMELY flimsy and actually broke off when I was sliding it back to single-link mode. I'm unsure if I could use a paper clip to move it back over if I ever needed to, but it's a huge letdown that such an expensive card would use such a cheap piece of plastic.

Other Thoughts: During the first startup, I was unable to get picture through one of my a display ports (I was using a spare 22" Acer V223W with an active adapter). Taking off the adapter and using the DVI directly resolved that issue, but I'm not really sure what the problem was. The card was toggled to single-link mode at this point, so all 4 DPort should've been toggled on. I haven't had any issues with DVI or DPort slots since then, however.

The left-most port (when looking at the rear of the case) is the one that apparently gets disabled by dual-link DVI mode.

I'm not really sure why there are green LEDs next to each 8-pin power connector. I might have missed some ulterior purpose, but they look kind of silly if they're just there for decoration.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!

Pros: Huge upgrade from my 5970. Runs Cool hooked up to a custom loop. Highest temp I have seen is 34c while benching and 32c while gaming. Looks killer. Looks even more killer with all the rest of my ROG hardware.

Cons: Electric bill? Price?

Other Thoughts: 8000 series? Meh I couldn't pass it up.

5 out of 5 eggsIts powerful

Pros: Great for gaming if you have a demanding system. Aside from gaming, which many reviews on the web have covered, there are other neat GPGPU programs that can be used. Previous dual GPU cards could not disable onboard cross-fire but this can. The radiator is huge and includes two fans. It fits a level 10 GTS but might consider buying a new case. This card is very silent.

Cons: Well the price is quite high, I will be eating peanut butter and jelly for a few months until my $1500 is earned back. The card is huge, but not as heavy as looks might suggest. Card outputs a tremendous amount of heat, it is heating up my room right now in the winter.

Other Thoughts: This card is expensive, there are many uses beyond gaming, in fact I might try to mine litecoins (1.150 MH/s with cgminer; 1.375 GH/s bitcoin - not important since ASIC is out) with it when not gaming or programming; this card can in some ways be an alternative to the Firepro S10000. The Tahiti cores in the ARES II are "cherry picked" to be the highest quality chips produced, they are stable and overclock up to 1300 MHz with some voltage tweak.

Lets face it, Tahiti has been out for over a year, new series cards from AMD and nVidia will be released towards the end of 2013, which TSMC will start producing 20nm chips, thus driving down the cost of 28nm chips. The increase in performance between series is usually between 20 to 35% The ARES is clocked at 1100 MHz (10% above GHz 7970, and 18% normal 7970), by overclocking it up to even 1275 results in increase of 27% for GHz 7970 and 37% for normal 7970 - pretty close to supposed "theoretical performance increase" of non OEM 8970.

5 out of 5 eggsAsahi

Pros: Takes 2.2 slots now I’ll have room to add a RAID controller now, better than the GTX 680s which takes up 3 slots. The water cooling system has its pros and cons: quite, keeps the CPU cooler then air – installing the two cards in a Corsair D800 is a bit of a problem since there's already a H100 cooler for the CPU. I've had to cut a slot in the case to route the hoses out the back and hang the radiators off the back of the 140mm fan location with a Koolance Radiator Mounting Bracket BKT-HK001. Would have liked if the radiator hoses were detachable then I would not have had to cut the case.

Cons: Not sure what to do with the case the cards shipped in, looks cool but not necessary. The driver is listed as beta, Asus has not had much time to test it...hopefully this does not come back and bit us.

Other Thoughts: Expecting good numbers from PCMark... tbc
