eggcellent card
- Pros: i'm using 2 of these in sli with an asus p5n-d. this board has only 1 slot between pci-e 16x slots. there is no clearance issue with this card in sli, unlike the msi cards they replaced.
at 1920x1080p the 3d performance is equal to or better than just about any single gpu card at any price. in fact, the 9600gt scales better than any other multi-gpu setup. the nice oc makes it even sweeter. the big oc at stock voltage means power draw remains mostly normal, about 30W idle / 100W load.
this card is about an inch shorter than the reference board.
the included oc software writes the settings to the vga bios, not windows/driver. changes are made to both cards simultaneously.
the cooler on the card is very effective, but has limits. sli, quiet htpc case, furmark torture test 1920x1080p ambient 20c gpu0 (with gpu1 on top of it)= 85c gpu1 (with sound card on top of it)= 93c thermal protection = 105c single card (no obstuction)= 74c
- Cons: gamerhud software is pretty lame, perfectly normal for any motherboard manufacturer's software. the frequency and voltage controls work (no need to touch them, really) but the 2d mode seems to have stopped working (no biggie, it's kind of a novelty). this software is not at all necessary for the full benefit of the card, and so i decduct zero eggs.
a single 9600gt would not perform to my satisfaction, but i knew that and planned accordingly. a single 9600gt is acceptable in most games only up to medium resolutions.
- Other Thoughts: this is a very solid product. you can achieve some very good results with some thought and effort. temps are a little better if the card is used as an intake, but positive pressure works ok too.
my box: silverstone lc20-m htpc with 3x nexus 80mm silverstone st-60 600w q9300, p5n-d, 2x2GB ddr2800 xigmatek hdt-sd964
Outstanding!
- Pros: What an improvement! replacing an 8800 gt card that served me well for 2 years but the new card is outstanding! I play wow and the shadows, dust storms, death glow I am seeing as never before. Heat in my well ventilated computer is no problem as the card runs with everything maxed out in wow at about 65c same as the fanned 8800. Great card
- Cons: Size maybe, you need open space around the card for the heat pipes to work and good case fans.
- Other Thoughts: No noise is sweet! Just hearing the case fans is worth the price.
MAX 2/19/2009
- Pros: I have had (and still have 2 in 1 of my cases) 8 Fanless VGA cards. I have YET to have an issue with heat, as I have PROPER COOLING DIRECTION throughout my cases and the builds I have done for customers/friends. MAX, you need to look-up "PC CASE COOLING" on the 'net- maybe under 1 of the 1,000 great forums on Tech elp for newer PC builders. With CORRECT airflow and CPU-MEMORY BANK settings, all fanless (even the low-end brands) VGA cards will run and stay cool at all points of gaming, photo & video editing, TV recording, and so on... Remember- your case wiring has to be ran correctly and out of the way of FRONT fan airflow, HDD's need to be spaced apart, the most used Image drive should not be at the top, and the back/sides of the case should be at least 6" to 12" from walls/enclosures. AMD's run hotter than Intel's, so check-out those forums and you don't have to give up on AGP VGA's either- XFX still makes high-end AGP cards....
