MSI's NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC video card is built on nVIDIA’s new GeForce 8600GTS core. The card packs in 256MB of GDDR3 memory. High Definition is the next big gaming challenge, so it's not surprising that it has dual DVI (dual link) outputs, along with component HDTV output. It fits nicely into a PCI Express x16 slot, supports nVidia SLI if you have two, and is fully DirectX 10 and OpenGL 2.0 compatible. What really makes the it special it is factory overclocked to 700 MHz core, 2100 MHz memory.
A stock GeForce 8600GTS videocard hums along at 675 MHz and 2000 MHz respectively. MSI takes advantage of the time since the 8800 series launched for nVIDIA to move from a 90nm fabrication process to 80nm, so the GeForce 8600 now uses faster clock speeds on the core, unified shaders and memory. To top things off, it has a sweet custom dual slot cooler that connects the heatsink to a finned radiator, and apparently keeps the GeForce 8600GTS ~15 degrees Celsius cooler than the reference design! The fan blows cooling air through a duct and across the cooler but there's a sizeable gap between the heat exchanger and the vented bracket.
It comes with an S-Video cable, a component output cable dongle, two DVI-to-Analog converters and a dual molex to six pin power connector. Swimming strongly through the confusion of mainstream cards, this 8600GTS card from MSI could be a strong finisher in the race to the top of the heap!

to LonelyNessisNotFree
- Pros: A very very fast video card especially in SLI. Best video card for the money. This and eVGA seem to be even as far as quality and performace, I've used both.
- Cons: its a rather large card and in SL it covers most PCI slots and that can be cumbersome in some cases.
- Other Thoughts: As far as LonelyNessIsNotFree is concernend. I have a computer store in Middle Tennesse and have sold dozens of these cards. I have yet to encounter the problems you've described. This card can hand any 7900 it's head with ease and in SLI this card beats an 8800GTX. My 3DMark05 scores prove it. On my test machine the 8800GTX scored 17,895 and these scored almost 21k which is a severe but kicking. Please don't post information that is inaccurate because people who don't know that much about them will read your misinformation and make a bad decision based on you lack of knowledge. I build about 15 to 20 computers a week so I have a lot of chances to try various components in different arrangements so my customers get the biggest bang for thier buck. At the moment 2 of these cards are just that along with an e6600
and an eVGA 680i motherboard. So learn some and please don't give out any more bad advice because MSI is a quality company,
Great card, much much better than I expected
- Pros: I have a side consulting business and got 2 of these cards to test PSU's in SLI, along with a variety of other cards(8800, X2900xt etc..). I wasn't expecting much due to some of the reviews on the 8600GTS series cards. I was surprised at the default scores these cards provided. We also put it in a PC(A64 X2 @3ghz 3gb of DDR2@800mhz) and we're running Bioshock at DX10, highest details at 1280x1024. Now FPS would occasionally dip <30fps, so I think some tuning of options or resolution was in order. That system was running an X1800XT 512mb card and the frames were only maybe 1-3fps on average higher with the ATI, yet the 8600GTS looked markedly better, even in DX9. Now enabling DX10 it looked even better yet :). Fan is quiet, PCB is a nice red. MSI did a great job. BTW one card clocks to 800/1250 and the other clocks to about 750/1175mhz
- Cons: Needs a PCI express power plug. Not really a con persay, but some people may not have PSU's with those connectors. I got my cards OEM so I'm not sure if they come with an adapter or not
- Other Thoughts: Great card for not alot of $$$ :). MSI is a great company and the cooler is impressive and very quiet.

Good value... for a while.
- Pros: It's a really powerful card for the money... while it lasts.
- Cons: As some people have said, the card not work long until the it starts causing system crashes during intense computation. Initially, it comes with the RAM clocked at 2100MHz (100MHz over spec) and the CPU at 700MHz (25 MHz over spec).
The rebate is also quite slow in coming; still haven't seen mine.
- Other Thoughts: In order to make the card work under Ubuntu 8.04 (running Team Fortress 2 under Wine) after the crashes set in, I had to install nvidia-settings with apt-get, add the line ' Option "Coolbits" "1" ' to Devices in my xorg.conf, then reduce the CPU to 650MHz (actually 25MHz slower than spec) and the RAM clock to 1900MHz (100 MHz below spec) in the nvidia-settings GUI.
Based on this experience, this is the last factory overclocked card I will buy.
Great Card
- Pros: Great frame rates. Max settings on all of my games. Runs very cool.
- Cons: Obviously, takes up 2 slots. But the cooling would not be possible.
- Other Thoughts: SLI would be very good.
Surprisingly good card.
- Pros: Card performs great for only being a 256. I'm running a machine with this and only 1GB of RAM and CS:S runs at full high + 16x AA with 40-70 fps depending on the map.
- Cons: Expensive compared to other 8600s, but more powerful from what I can tell.
- Other Thoughts: No power adapter with it, make sure you get the right adapter and plug it into your power supply.
