1 out of 5 eggsOld review

Pros: It's a good GPU, back in 2011
(This is a very old review I forgot to feedback.)

Cons: On the day I received this card it was already pixelated when building my first computer setup.
I purchased this back in Summer 2011, and it had some problems on arrival.
It didn't pass the benchmark test as I was putting stress on this card: orange and red colored pixels appeared randomly on my desktop like it had chicken pox, and temp was going over 90C.

I returned it and bought a different gpu instead.

Other Thoughts: My brother has the exact card because he had also bought this in 2011 as well, and his works perfectly fine for him.

Runs WoW, Diablo 3, BF3, and many Steam games smoothly, but eventually he will need to upgrade his HD 6950 to something better.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Card - stay away

Pros: Reviews are good

Cons: Driver issues abound. Latest driver 3/8/12 from AMD results in black screen after win 7 logo. 2 geeks and an IT guy from work can't fix it. Of course since I bought it 10/2011 it's way past RMA time. I've wasted too much of my life on trying to get this thing to work so we're off to the shooting range with it.

Other Thoughts: No more MSI for me.

3 out of 5 eggsrebate - update

Pros: I finally received my rebate on 1/31/12. Seems like it took a very long time for it to be issued but I did get it. Thanks MSI.

Cons: It seemed to take a long time to receive the rebate. Wouldn't it be easier to just send a paper check instead of a plastic card.

3 out of 5 eggsStill haven't received my rebate

Pros: It seems to be ok.

Cons: I purchased this in October and mailed all the forms for my rebate. According to "4myrebate" it has been approved since November 10,2011 but as of today 1/22/2012 I still have not received the rebate.
The Dirt 3 game does not work properly.
Very disappointed. Will think twice about ordering another MSI product.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm happy with it!

Pros: I have had this card for six months now. And I am vry happy with it, got GPU running a 920mhz and temps at 73C. Been using it for Bitcoin mining. I am using the shader unlock modification to unlock all shaders. And running at 920Mhz stable I am getting 410 Mh/s.

Cons: Had to use Sapphire trixx to get past the 840 Mhz wall with this card.

Other Thoughts: I am new to the overclocking scene, so be gentle:)

4 out of 5 eggsgood card, maybe not the best buy

Pros: This card is really fast, it stays plenty cool (I haven't broken 70C yet), and the fan is not loud at all. It's really everything I expected.

Cons: This is a really good card but I took off one egg because it's not really worth the extra money over the 1GB version. If you look at benchmarks and reviews there's not any performance advantage to the 2GB in almost every area. Since this card cannot be unlocked to a 6970 (to my knowledge), it's not worth the extra money.

This card is heavy and the PCB has warped a little with the weight. This is the first double-slot card I've owned, though, so this might be normal.

Other Thoughts: I play Crysis 2 at 1600x900 resolution. With everything cranked all the way up (tessellation, dx11, ultra settings, everything) the game is playable but just barely. I almost always stay just over 30fps (the magic number for me) but every once in a while I dip under 20fps. It doesn't happen enough for me to lower the settings but it does happen.

It took a really long time to get my free game but I did get it.

I have not tried to overclock.

3 out of 5 eggsBought on different newegg account

Pros: FAST!!! Faster than i expected! This thing, according to the benchmarks i have done is about twice as fast as my previous Sapphire Radeon HD 5830 card, which i was absolutely in love with but had to give up for this.
Amazing cooler, awesome design, fit perfect in to my Thermaltake V4 case with room to spare!

Cons: Wont overclock for SQUAT!!!! I cant get this thing stable at 850mhz, let alone 930mhz (which was the original plan after a slight voltage tweak). I thought maybe it was because i was testing the stability on BF3 (because BF3 is still kinda buggy) but then i fired it up in Skyrim and Crysis 2 and it would still crash!!!
After a day i gave up on using Trixx (HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT) and went to the Catalyst Control Center to see what it would let me overclock it to. 840mhz? Is this a joke? This card has a 5 heatpipe cooler, dual fans, and its a 6950. There should be WAYYYYY more headroom than this for overclocking. At 840 mhz i wasnt breaking 52C under load on stock fan settings.
My Radeon 5830 would overclock with the best of them, (stock at 800mhz OC'd to 975mhz stable without missing a beat) To some degree i would almost rather have my 5830 back, because it was more stable than this card, but the performance gains outweigh that desire..(somewhat)
Also; i was unable to unlock the 6970

Other Thoughts: I'm gonna see if Newegg will let me exchange this one for another one. I am pretty disappointed with this product, and bought it pretty much solely for the awesome cooler that it boasts. Well, that cooler is pretty much overkill for all that this card is letting me do. I consider myself a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to overclocking, and i DO expect quite a bit from my new video cards, but this thing has deflated all of my expectations when it comes to overclocking.

Another thing; unlike in the picture this card DID NOT come with a free copy of Dirt 3. (Its still the Dirt 3 edition card, dangit!) Not really a biggy to me because i already own Dirt 3, but to others, and to my friend who i promised the copy, this may be somewhat of a let-down.

I love you ATi, but this GPU seems like you should have binned it lower than a 6950....
*Walks over to the 7970's and drools*
3 eggs because it works at stock clocks, -2 eggs because it wont overclock for squat!

4 out of 5 eggsOverclocker's card!

Pros: My II's unlocked to 1536 shaders. This thread was helpful in that process: http ... hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1622205

These OC'd at stock voltages straight to 6970 clocks (880 & 1325) with zero hiccup on either card. Temps in my HAF 932 case are 72 & 61C respectively in BF3. Running Eyefinity in Windows 7 & Linux; 5760x1080 in BF3 is pretty spectacular. Two of these cards in CrossFire will haul BF3 up to about 35-38FPS in 5760x1080, running 8xAA, & reasonably high detail & shadows.

Got these cards to both unlock the shaders, overclock, and water cool. These cards are advertised in the datasheet as being compatible with Enzotech's hybrid VGA cooler solution. It uses a standard VGA-sized waterblock that mounts like a standard CPU block, and a separate large passive heatsink for the rest of the card. Why is this good? You can re-use the VGA waterblock when you get new cards! Just have to see if it fits!

Cons: Drivers for this card in both windows & linux were very poor when I bought these cards & installed them. There are still some performance issues, especially in linux, but the short-term kernel panics seem to have been fixed. Video playback in linux still drags down if X has been running for more than a day, and Xorg starts to consume ridiculous amounts of CPU, even when sitting idle. An X restart fixes this temporarily.

Flash video doesn't play very well in the linux drivers at all. It's very jerky, and typically drags behind the audio, with jerky catch-ups.

No CrossFire in Eyefinity in Linux!

PROTIP: There is NO community support for the 6000 series cards in linux right now. It's proprietary driver support or nothing. So be warned!

Other Thoughts: Fantastic hardware, I just hope the drivers catch up. -1 egg for driver problems (would have been 2-3 eggs off in September; they've improved markedly).

MSI's card runs cool and quiet, especially at idle. Very capable hardware, great for OC!

5 out of 5 eggsA great deal between budget and mid range

Pros: Very nice card, saw huge improvements over my aging 5770. Haven't done much multi-monitor with it yet, but I hear it is very good for that due to it's massive amount of memory. Running BF3 smoothly on Ultra at 1400 x 1050 duplicating on a 1024 x 768 projector. Chews up and spits out any game you throw at it. Stays nice and cool during your various benchmarks and gaming.

Cons: Might be too glossy for some, make sure it can fit in your case, it just barely does in my CM Storm Scout. I wish the clocks could go higher (They could, but the clocks cannot exceed 840Mhz core and 1325Mhz memory with Afterburner/CCC) Doesn't have a dual bios switch, so flashing to 6970 shaders/clocks is a bit risky.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: Very cool running card, I currently have the voltages turned up a bit for my OC 940/1450 so a moderate overclock. In BF3 it typically peaks out at 63c (Cards are rated up to 95c most people don't recommend going over 80c). I am able to have BF3 on Ultra settings (No AA or any other settings similar to AA) but everything still looks and runs amazing. I highly recommend this card along with any other MSI graphics card.

Cons: None really, this is a beast. See other thoughts

Other Thoughts: If you are looking at a chance of unlocking (unlocking is where you are able to get 6970 shaders on the 6950), this is NOT the card to do so with. You would want the TFIII series as it is a reference card. Remember you may brick your card when flashing the cards BIOS so do it at your own risk! This card is great even without the unlock and you can unlock at or greater than a 6970 (if you're lucky)
