Poorly designed...
- Pros: Great performance/cost - I can play Oblivion on highest settings at 1280x720 with HDR and 4x AA without any problems. At the time I bought it, there were no other x1950pros around its price.
- Cons: Extremely loud fan, and since it is only a 2 pin fan connector, the speed cannot be controlled like on other cards (I tried ATItool,CCC, and others without success). The fan spins at 100% all the time! For a htpc, this is unacceptable - I can hear the fan from 2 rooms away. Card speeds were also mis advertised when I bought the card, but have since been corrected.
- Other Thoughts: This will be the first product I have returned to Newegg. At least newegg customer service is great as always.
Loud...very very Loud
- Pros: Average reference design type card. For the price it was the best choice at the time. I have not checked out the issue with the core clocks or anything but if they are off I will be asking for a refund.
- Cons: LOUD. I turned on my new comp for the first time the other day and thought a small airplane was flying into my room. This little fan spins really really fast and makes a ton of noise. I would not recommend this card to anything because of the noise alone.
- Other Thoughts: What were the engineers thinking putting a tiny fan on a very hot graphics part. Completely ruined an otherwise decent card.
Specs are wrong
- Pros: Fairly low price (after rebate) for this chipset. With the stock cooling, I was able to hit 648MHz core, though I couldn't overclock the RAM at all. Note that I didn't do any extensive burn-in testing, though.
- Cons: The specs on this page currently say 600MHz core / 1400MHz mem, but out-of-the box mine was 575MHz core 1200MHz mem (as noted above, the core overclocked somewhat, but the mem didn't). The cooler is small and noisy. No RPM or temperature sensors. The row of caps near the DVI and VGA connectors prevents most aftermarket coolers (such as the Accelero X2, which is what I tried) from fitting. For some reason, it has a normal Molex drive connector for auxiliary power, rather than the 6-pin PCIe connector.
- Other Thoughts: I've spent thousands of dollars over several years at Newegg, and this will be my very first return, I'm afraid...
