1 out of 5 eggsKnown to fail near or at 2 year warranty mark

Pros: Good speed out of box
Overlcocks like a monster (competes close to 660ti)
If it works out of the box it will run for 1.5-2 years
Came with 4 free games to pad the cost and thankfully they are good games
Stays very cool(idle 30c)
Not loud, but not whisper quiet like some may suggest. Is a bit quieter than my standard case fans until under heavy load, when the fan kicks up and you hear rushing air with a slight scraping sound, but nothing loud.

Cons: Not a lifetime warranty like you get with XFX
They try their hardest not to honor their 2 year warranty
Known to fail out of box or very near the warranty end date
Cost to use the warranty equals that of the card or two to three times the cost to repair yourself.
Their website help tickets are a nightmare. Nearly every time you click something it asks you to log in. It took me 7 tries to make ONE ticket post.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased THREE of these cards. The first had a broken fan out of the box and sounded like it was grinding itself to death on a table grinder. The second worked great until it began to grind and one of the fans eventually stopped and FELL OFF. The card would then overheat and shut down the PC. It was only a few days after the warranty was up. The third lasted about 1.8 years with the EXACT same issue as the other two, fan began to grind and eventually stop. After contacting them they tried to tell me it was out of warranty. It took three days to prove it was under warranty and they told me I would have to pay for shipping BOTH WAYS and might have to pay a $60 fee. They also said they would put the SAME cooler on it. The cooler that has been failing for hundreds of people (just google 7870 fan failure) and has failed for me on every 7870 I have had. Sapphire is not to be trusted. I always bought XFX or Sapphire, but never dealt with Sapphire customer service and warranty. Their warranty is nearly impossible to file and when you do, you pay close to the card price for something like the 7870. With XFX it was "Oh, you received this as a gift? No problem, we will email you a shipping label and will have it back to you in two weeks". Not to mention they are often lifetime warranties or at least 5 years with XFX. I will never cheap out and go with Sapphire again. They are selling a botched product and they don't care at all. This failing cooler is a known issue now and they simply refuse to issue a recall or offer a good replacement policy for their mistake. Their thoughts on it are "Most people buy new cards after two years anyway so there is no need to rectify this problem." and "We can offer you a list of other similar cards from our new line to replace the broken cards." They just want to sell me more stuff instead of fix a failure caused by their bad manufacturing. Starting to fell like this is the EA of graphics cards.

How to know yours is failing:
- You start to hear a grinding noise, much louder at higher load
- One of the fans spins slower than the other
- One of the fans wobbles and hangs down a bit past the cooler
- One fan may eventually stop and possibly fall off.
- Computer will begin shutting down when under heavy graphics load (means at least one fan has stopped entirely)

Other known issues with Sapphire 7870:
A recall was issued for a specific line of them due to a black screen problem. Not related to my issue.

4 out of 5 eggsAdequate

Pros: BIOS switch allows easy recovery from bad flash. Was able to squeeze 480 khash/sec out of this card mining litecoins after extensive tuning.

Cons: Fans started 'rattling' when running at low RPMs after running continuously for about 6 months with the fans at 90%. Sounds like a bad bearing. Fans still run fine at high RPMs.

Other Thoughts: Haven't used this video card for anything except mining litecoins.

2 out of 5 eggsBuy a 6950, but not this one

Pros: I have had an XFX Radeon 6950 for 2 years and It's been excellent. I bought this one for crossfire.

Cons: The fans are idiotically loud. I actually removed the cooler thinking that I might swap it with another (I didn't in the end), and discovered that it's very poorly constructed. The Sapphire OC edition has 5 heat pipes, my XFX has 3, this one has 2. I also found that thermal paste had been applied so haphazardly that it seeped off the GPU and onto the board itself. The fans are harder to judge, but I can confirm that they are way too loud. Loud enough that I reverted to a single GPU.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the issue that you are facing with the card. We are currently investigating the cause of this problem. If you would like, you can email me at

Best Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsNice card.

Pros: I purchased this at a good Price to performance ratio, for Scrypt mining. I expected maybe 420kHs, i unlocked shaders and put it outside where Nature could cool it, and it delivers a little over 500khs, stable. It has paid for itself, and the Powersupply, and still pays for its own electricity, and more.

Cons: Fans are built of inferiority, and not easily
stuck my finger in them, maybe accidentally stuck something else in proximity to fan. No Fan grill. Blade broke off, company had no replacement fan assemblies.(non replaceable fan)

Other Thoughts: The card also paid for its own repair. Purchased 2 Vantec Tornadoes and proceeded to assemble the loudest video card cooler that i've ever seen/heard.

4 out of 5 eggsgood card for prce

Pros: temps at idle 32 degrees c at all times

max load temps for any games 60 degrees c

good price range in 2011 = $ 250.00

duel fans are quiet even at 60 percent fan speed after 21/2 years of ownership

runs battlefield 3 ultra settings at 60 fps at 1600-900

runs battlefield 4 ultra settings at 60 fps at 1600-900

runs assassins creed 4 black flag just under ultra at
55 fps at 1600-900

Cons: first power color video card i got died after 2 weeks of use

card is very flimsy and can easily break with no prob if not careful while installing :(

Other Thoughts: have not had any issues since second card which is why i give you 4 stars instead of 1. I understand that sometimes in rare cases that hardware does break of natural causes which is why i gave this card a second chance.....but in future this will not happen again

5 out of 5 eggsMining..

Pros: This card stays cool even when I have the intensity of my litecoin miner at 18. The board will peak out just over 500Kh/s.

Cons: A little long, so I had to rearrange my case to accommodate it, no biggie, but necessary.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent GPU

Pros: I order this Graphics card over a year ago and this upcoming Christmas it will be 2 years since I have had this GPU.I have to say that this can run any game today alongside a good CPU at max settings at a 1080p screen resolution. This graphics card is amazing and I can run metro last light at max settings and get 50-60fps.I can run crysis 3 at extreme settings and get 40-50fps at 1080p.That is impressive,I can also run battlefield 4 at ultra and all settings at ultra at a constant 60fps.Bottom line this is a great graphics card I would recommend this to anyone who wants one.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsGreat GPU

Pros: Until the latest releases in 2013 this GPU has been able to give me solid frame rates over 30 with all games on Max settings at 1080p. I have this coupled with an fx 8350 in case your interested. This GPU can get a bit hot reaching temps over 70 Celsius after prolonged game play. You can keep the temps lower at max fan speed, but they can get very loud.

Cons: when I purchased this Graphics card new the price was worth it. With much better options at the 200$ range I could no longer recommend this GPU for the price in 2013. Look for almost anything other then this card at the 200 dollar price.

Other Thoughts: If you can get this card in good condition used for around 100-125 dollars I would recommend this card all day. It is powerful and will still play all modern games. In the coming years it will not be able to max out settings at 1080p anymore, but the card still performs quite well.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Very Belated Review

Pros: After owning this card for 6 months, I can tell you that this is hands down the best card that I've owned. I upgraded from 2 dual GTX 285s in SLi Mode and I've never looked back. Everything runs stable at 40-60C under heavy load, and can get 55-60 FPS on Skyrim with over 70 mods installed with over 25 land re-texture mods without breaking a sweat. just did a simple overclock with CCC running at 880/1300 and no problems to date.

Cons: Pretty noisy, 60% fans are so loud in my case that my Kinect sensor in the same room cannot sync the mic properly, the PCB is fine, and copper heat pipes seem to be relatively stable, however the fan shroud had me worried for how easy it can flex (I'm used to full case cards), but has done an excellent job venting heat so far.

Other Thoughts: The worst thing about this card is how it's deactivated on Newegg
