1 out of 5 eggsOverheating And Crashing

Pros: Cheaper than other brands

Cons: Unstable
Too hot to touch

Other Thoughts: First crash came within 20 minutes of normal windows use. System stayed on but video output to both monitors stopped. Rebooted system and was fine for another 20 minutes, this time I wasted no time in trying to download the latest drivers. It did not help. Already RMAd. Incidientally, the free power bank you get with the package also died after the first charging. LOL

Spend the extra money and go with another brand.

Manufacturer Response:

This is Raymond from PowerColor. We apologize for the issue that you are faced with. Let me know if you have any issue with the RMA, as for the powerbank, it has a one year warranty on it. Please email me at and we can troubleshoot it.

1 out of 5 eggsAwful

Pros: Inexpensive, has great potential.

Cons: 2 dead cards after only being in system for a few minutes. 1st card was DOA, 2nd card worked fine until a load was put on then completely black screened my computer and fails to work in any rig.

Other Thoughts: r9 290 is plagued with defects, best to stay away from this card.

Manufacturer Response:

This is Raymond from PowerColor. We apologize for the issue that you are faced with. Please email me at If you should have any issue with future cards.

3 out of 5 eggsCould be good, Could be bad

Pros: Sick outer shell. Love the design

Cons: Not sure if mine works, if its DOA, or if i'm just doing something wrong. see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: I honestly couldn't say if my motherboard is bad or if its the gpu. the other day, i plugged my entire system in for the first time and got memory errors (incompatible, too fast, etc). the computer wouldn't post so i got no display to at all. it was only telling me that my ram was no good. take it apart, begin to rma my board bc thats what i thought the problem was at this point. today, put it all back together and it gives me different errors torally unrelated to my gpu, etc. tinkering later, i flash the BIOS and try again. i get to error AE which is a "legacy boot event." my red, VGA led is lit up O its a problem with my card at this point. at least that is what we're speculating about it. at this point, i'm going to try and trade in amd find a better suited Nd rates gou for this build

5 out of 5 eggsPOWER! color

Pros: AWESOME CARD! GREAT PRICE! What's not to like?!?!?

Runs some bench marks slower than my previous setup of 3x5850s ONLY if Video memory usage stays below 1GB (what's on my 5850s). Otherwise it turned in results 2 or 3 times faster as soon as memory usage jumped to 1.5 or 2GB of video memory. Which MOST games now will use more than 1GB if you want to play with Ultra/High Settings and/or above 1920x1080. I have an Eyefinity setup using 3 x 22" 1680x1050 monitors (5040x1050) and this thing will rock most games even at that resolution. Call of Pripyat Bench mark with Ultra and max Antialiasing, Tesselation, etc. Gets ~45 fps or 51 fps O.Ced to 1075 Mhz.

Card CAN be OverClocked to at least 1075 Mhz using something like AfterBurner. BUT the stock fan design will get VERY LOUD. So I will just get another card rather than use Over Clocking with the stock fan. (if needed)

FYI: In my test my GPU never got above 75C at approx. 75% Fan speed @ 1075Mhz using Afterburn during any of my benchmarks.

BEST of all got great deal over Memorial Day after sale, promo and (rebate still waiting on of course since I've only had it a week) my purchase price was ~300 :D ollars!!!

So like I said "What's NOT to like???"

Cons: Stock Cooler gets LOUD if you O.C. not really worth it for 10-15% Max improvement unless you like the sound of a blender running... :D

Two year warranty, really?

Some of my 5850s had DOUBLE lifetime warranty (XFX, but not on any new cards) or 3-5 years. Although, it looks like EVERYONE is cutting back their warranties these days even though cards are getting HIGHER priced.

5 out of 5 eggsfast as hell and cheap

Pros: 330 bucks before rebate....
fast !!!!

Cons: loudish-my case is pretty loud so it matches up.

Other Thoughts: know what this card is loud....and by loud I mean tasty. You can't hear your baby monitor over it? Well, that was your first mistake. You shouldn't be having children. On a positive note it will drone out any nagging from your significant other. I did a fresh install and I am running far no issues. I do run my fan on a custom settings and ill throttle it to 55% which seems like the sweet spot for keeping the card happy. For the rest of you with issues maybe its time to blame yourself and not the card.

4 out of 5 eggsHave to adjust the fan speed!

Pros: Great performance, low price. ADJUST THE FAN SPEED! read the cons.

Cons: The card overheated within 20 minutes of playing a game. Looking in the catalyst control center, there is an option called AMD overdrive. Use this to adjust the target temp on the GPU to something in the 80's and set the max fan speed to 100% after the adjustment I had no more issues with overheating. The fan is incredibly loud, almost sounds dangerous... I like it.

Other Thoughts: The fan speed is limited to 40% by default, the card will overheat. See the cons for a workaround.

1 out of 5 eggsBought this used 2 weeks after release... Died.

Pros: This is my 2nd review, I'm writing this now to mention the card has totally died on me.

However, BF4 @ 1080p was a joke for this card.

Cons: This was a Press Review card that I bought used locally (in Texas - not via NewEgg) and it only lasted 6 months.

PowerColor is clearly an inferior brand, because I hardly stressed the card unless I was playing BF4 - which was less than 6 Days of total in-game play.

...I'm really disappoint. PowerColor much fails. Am recommending other brands. Many FPS when playing FTW! Good RAM.

Other Thoughts: PowerColor is basically untrustworthy with respect to product reliability. Do not buy their products until told otherwise!

Manufacturer Response:

This is Raymond from Powercolor. We apologize for the issue that you faced with the card. The card that you bought is a AMD reference design board. Electronic fails all the time, please be assured that we use the best materials for our products.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: It's an R9 290
Shreds every game maxed out unless you're running beyond 5760*1080
Decent OCer @ 1075/1375 +37mV in Trixx
Reference design to attach aftermarket cooler(s)
Won't need a GPU upgrade for a few years.

Cons: Black screen issues? See Other Thoughts

Other Thoughts: The 4th 290 I have owned; 2 have been sold to friends/co-workers.

Bought open box for $299

These cards are loud with reference coolers. If you're looking for a quiet card that doesn't need any modification, then cough up a few extra $ and get the PowerColor PCS+.
Your other options are the Gelid Icy VIsion, Arctic Accelero Extreme IV, or using the Kraken G10 with an AIO water cooler.
If you choose to run the Kraken G10 with an AIO, then you must properly cool VRM1 on these cards.

To those worrying about or experiencing black screen issues please read!
Use 13.12 and I can practically guarantee that you will not experience any issues with this card; unless you get a faulty one.
These cards are very finicky when it comes to any old VGA drivers hanging around. You must THOROUGHLY remove any/all old drivers with something like Display Driver Uninstaller. A fresh Windows install isn't a bad idea sometimes either.
The WHQL 14.4 drivers are out, but I would NOT suggest running them.

The power requirements for these cards are not as high as you may think. A reference R9 290 at stock settings will draw ~180W peak.
The cooler you get the card to run the more efficient they will be.
For Example, I used the Kraken G10 to watercool this card and at stock settings it draws just under 160W peak; Overclocked to 1075/1375 +37mV it draws 207W.
I am having no problems with the Rosewill Capstone 450M with this GPU, a 3770k @ 4GHz, 8GB 2133MHz RAM, SSD, 2 HDD, ODD, 2 AIO pumps and a few fans.
If you get a card that will go far enough they can draw ~360W. My XFX Black Edition 290 OverClocked to 1300/1700 +50% Power Limit +200mV comes in at 359.5W peak; this is with a full cover waterblock.

1 out of 5 eggsRebate Warning

Pros: Comes in a pretty box.

Cons: Warning! PowerColor does NOT pay rebates. If you are buying this because of a rebate offer then reconsider. Some companies make it hard to collect a rebate. PowerColor just ignores them altogether. You won't get a notice. You won't be asked to fix it or submit additional information. You won't get anything. Ever. You can try sending your rebate certified, return receipt, but that's going to cost you more money. It's not worth the effort or the cost. Buy from another manufacturer.
