Quadro FX 1800 on the cheap.
- Pros: Powered completely by PCI-X slot without need for a six-pin hookup. Very compact. Powerdraft driver for ACAD 2009 absolutely smokes. Standard Quadro drivers for VIZ 2008 are decent too. In benchmarks, the 580 performs very admirably compared to the 1800.
- Cons: 512mb of RAM doesn't like a lot these days, but the Quadro FX 1800 doesn't really offer much more (768).
- Other Thoughts: You've got no reason to buy one of these if you aren't building a workstation for Autocad, 3ds Max, or something similar. No gamers here.
Display Ports Really?
- Pros: The price is great for a card of this capacity. I have owned and used several Quadro cards and never had any issues.
- Cons: I am writing this review because of Nvidia's decision to have two display ports and only one DVI. Display port is great and all but this is a budget card. The cheapest monitor you will find with Display ports is twice the price of this card easily. Doesn't make sense!
- Other Thoughts: If I had enough money to buy a display that could take advantage of the display ports, I would not be buying a budget video card.
Good card, good support
- Pros: This card works great. I don't play games, so I can't vouch for game performance, but I've had no trouble with DVD playback or other video sources. Performance is about what I expected, with the exception that rotated displays seem to have diminished performance (some jitter/shear) when windows that span a rotated display and a non-rotated display are moved around. Maybe that's normal?
I have two of these, one driving a 30" display at 2560x1600, and the other driving two 20" displays at 1600x1200. No technical issues whatsoever on XP Pro 64-bit. The fans are very quiet -- I don't hear them at all, unlike high-end cards with larger/faster fans.
I had a problem with one of the DisplayPort -> DVI adapter cables, but PNY was very responsive. They cross-shipped a replacement immediately, and while they did not reimburse me for shipping, they did send me an extra cable as a show of goodwill.
Overall, I am happy with these cards and the quality of PNY's support.
- Cons: Didn't reimburse for shipping costs on an RMA return (which turned out to be more than the cost of the replacement item).
