5 out of 5 eggsfuture proof

Pros: When I got this card back in 09 it went into a rig I built in 06 and could not preform at its best. I'm handing it down to someone for a budget system I am building for them and I was worried it would not keep up with current cards so I started to look for a good but inexpensive card to use instead. After looking around I wanted to compare my choices to this one and was amazed that even though I would be getting more features with a new card I would be sacrificing gpu clock, memory speed, stream processor count and honestly looks. I'm glad I took the time to research a great card back then, and feel confident about the choices I made for this new build.

Cons: The dvi screws seem to keep getting stuck on the plug, cant seem to seat them in the card, but its only a minor inconvenience. The fan ended up rubbing against the plastic cover, the build up of dust inside the bearing sleeve took up the tight tolerance and after dissembling and cleaning it went back together perfectly.

Other Thoughts: I never paid attention to the temp and even though I did notice the vent blew hot air I never noticed any change in performance. I opened it up to clean it out before building the new rig and damaged the thermal stickers on the ram and power chips (mossfet im guessing) so I cleaned them off and used some antec formula 7 but they allowed more tolerance for the thickness of the thermal stickers. I will have to open it back up and re do it with a little more paste. I noticed the thermal stickers had different amounts of pressure on them. People who are having issues with their card running hot may need to do some tinkering to make sure everything is seated properly to allow the heat to dissipate through the heat sink efficiently. I really liked that the fan separated from the motor so I could wash it off in the sink and dry it before I applied fan oil to the sleeve before re assembly.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: Absolutely the best video Card I've had. Went from running a crossfire to this and I've gotten fantastic results from just this one card. Runs DX10 beautifully. Worth every penny. Been using it a year and it still takes everything I throw at it. I love you HD4870.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent performance, especially for the price. When set to automatic, fan is fairly quiet.

Cons: Card runs hot: 75C at idle with 20% fan, and up to 85C with 30% fan when playing demanding 3D games such as Crysis. It's possible to enable manual fan control through the Catalyst Control Panel, but fan noise became noticeable over the rest of the system beyond 35%.

4 out of 5 eggsHOT.

Pros: Fast. Runs all my games great. My Q6600 at 2.4 GHz is now the bottleneck

Cons: RUNS HOT AS HELL! Make sure to install the catalyst control center and enable ATI Overdrive, then put the fan at about 40%

Other Thoughts: It had LEDs on the pc board! Not sure why but they are red and they blink once on boot.

5 out of 5 eggsNice card

Pros: Great price, huge upgrade from HD4830.. Lifetime warrenty..
Jets air our the back of the case well w/ stock cooling.

Cons: Idle's at ~60 degrees.. but i manually turned the fan to 75% and the heat doesn't increase much while playing at all. Quiet at 75% dispite other reviews, but my case fans are loud, as is my house.

Other Thoughts: UPgrading from the HD4830 512mb i can now play Lotro on Ultra high settings in Dx10 with 2xAA 1680x1050 smoothly, could go higher if i wanted to but i enjoy a high fps.. and man, lotro looks awesome now..

Does what i bought it for.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Cards

Pros: I purchased several of these for systems I put together. Every single one of them came in perfect shape, not one bad egg in the bunch. Quiet fan, best to turn it up a notch and keep temps down.

Cons: XFX ripped me off on a Rebate !!! I got a Be Es postcard about "outside of date ranges"...but I wasn't. Happened to a friend too.

Other Thoughts: It's too bad they just stopped making these. Incredible, solid card. Pretty good fighting the good fight in Crysis.

5 out of 5 eggsCARD IS AWESOME!

Pros: Runs every game MAX settings. No stutters or choppy frames at all. My CPU is bottle necking it and it still runs everything amazingly! Runs at 42C at 45% fan speed and i have it overclocked as far as CCC will let me. it isn't loud at all at 45% fan speed.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: PC Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 4400+ Dual core overclocked to 2.9 GHZ

2 Gigs of DDR2 800Mhz.

Abit Kn9 SLI (Going to replace with a Crossfire Mobo and get another 4870)

And now a XFX 4870 1GB (witch pwns)

4 out of 5 eggsWorking now

Pros: Fits in a standard size case. Had to return the gtx 260 for that reason. Plays most games at maxed out settings but not all. Good price for the card.

Cons: Came to me overheating, took it out and pushed down the fan, heard a click and all has been well since. In Wolverine PC game its choppy at 1680x1050. Which kinda stinks, worries me how next years game will play on this it. Plays fine at 1440 setting but I expected a little more especially with a quad core and 6gigs of ram in the system.

Other Thoughts: Good card, but Im sure there are better out there.

5 out of 5 eggsBest bang for buck

Pros: Great performance for the money. Was either this card or a 4890. about 50 cheaper than the 4890 and still plays all my games maxed out at 1920X1080.
replaced my 8800GTS 320MB. Can now play games at 1920X1080 at max settings without an issue.
Very easy to install. I was lazy and didn't uninstall my nvidia drivers first. I put this thing in, hooked up the 2 6-pin power connectors, turned it on and it worked perfectly. Uninstalled nvidia driver, installed latest Catalyst drivers from ATI website, and had this baby up and running in 5 minutes on my new 1080p monitor.
Overclocks EASY.
-Overclocked from 950mhz to 975mhz GPU clock and from 900mhz to 950mhz memory clock. I don't know why some peoples cards are running so hot. mine is at a cool 58C on idle overclocked, and only 65C full load running Fallout 3. (considering I have an Antec 761345-75060-8 Expansion slot VGA Cooler)

Cons: Nothing whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: I dunno why people give this a con because it's not as good as an X2 or a 4890. Of course it's not, its cheaper and its a 4870 not a 4890. Frame rates are almost as good as my room-mates 4890 at 1920X1080 on high end games.
