Improved Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty Bitty Low-Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

Partially Resident Textures PRT Technology

Radically Change the Detail of Your Games from Flat to Realistic

Even in the latest titles, gamers may have noticed that games often reuse or repeat textures, particularly on the ground or in background scenery such as mountains or trees. This is because increasing the physical size or number of textures in a game can have a negative impact on the performance of a GPU. PRT is a radical technology that hopes to break this cycle.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid card, runs cool, performs well (had issues, RMA'd)

Pros: From when I got the card (late 2014) until October 2015, it worked flawlessly. It didn't ever have issues in terms of failing to boot / detect, artifacts, over-heating, loud fan noises, etc.

It's a solid card that runs cool and performs great. The lifetime warranty is awesome too (make sure you register it!) if you want that piece of mind.

Cons: About 10 months into the life of the card, mine malfunctioned and wouldn't boot properly.

I finally got the replacement video card today, and so I decided to write my review. I wouldn't say the RMA process was TOO annoying, but XFX asks you to do some pretty elaborate troubleshooting that many consumers wouldn't have the means to easily do (such as put a different similarly-powerful GPU in your machine, or put this card in someone else's similarly-powerful desktop) in order to see if the issue 'follows the card'. I told them I couldn't do that (my friends all prefer laptops, and I sold my previous card) and they eventually issued the RMA.

The cost to ship the defective card to California (from Toronto) was brutal. It sucks that the "industry standard" is to only cover return shipping. If one of the major video card manufacturers offered only a 3 year warranty but covered two-way shipping on replacements, I think I'd prefer that.

I also would have been more impressed with their RMA process if they did the "swap" like many other companies... where they ship you the replacement, you take it out and put the defective one in the box and mail that back. Then my downtime would have been far less. Instead, I had to do all the 'ticket' stuff until they finally issued the RMA, ship it out, wait for them to receive it, wait for them to inspect it, wait for them to process the replacement and mail it out, and then wait for it to ship 3,900 km to me. All in all, I was without my 270X for nearly 40 days. I know tech products aren't perfect, but it still soured me a bit.

Whatever. I'm done talking about that. It's a great card. Replacement works well. I'm just glad to be back up and running.

Other Thoughts: I don't like to review things a few weeks after purchase because that's not helpful for people who want to know about longevity. Usually I wait at least 12 months before reviewing any item.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the review, we really appreciate you taking the time to write it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: It's a beast.
It is pretty cost effective
It's not too bulky for any normal mid size tower
It can handle any game with ease

Cons: Probably wouldn't fit anything smaller than a mid size ATX case
Requires 4x peripheral power cables

Other Thoughts: I haven't done any overclocking on this card so I can't give thoughts there.
But I will tell you that you must have a 64 bit OS to run this card. I was running vista home 32 bit and it wasn't working properly. No drivers would download, the AMD catalyst control center wouldn't work and it would just duplicate one of my monitors. ( I use 2) As soon as I bought Windows 7 and installed it, It was working perfect.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A 64 BIT OS BEFORE YOU BUY!

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the review, we really appreciate you taking the time to write it. Make sure you download and run the 32 bit driver softare for the 32 bit systems.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

3 out of 5 eggspoor build quality

Pros: A good performing card for the price point. Over clocks easily 15% on the core clock to push out a little bit more FPS. Pretty stable with the current catalyst release of 15.7. Used to run very cool but has since started to idle at higher temps. 35 degree idle vs 27 when i first got it.

Cons: Fans are poor quality and noisy. The vibrate and so does the case of the gpu. After extended gaming with the fan at 50% i have to drop the speed down to 40% to stop the rattling of the card.

Other Thoughts: get a different brand card. The xfx one is not the most solid card of the bunch.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Joseph,

We're sorry you are having trouble with your 270x Cooler. If you're getting a vibration or noise, its an indicator a bearing is failing which could be the source of all your temperature concerns. We gladly send out free replacement fans for any models we have in stock. Please email me your shipping address at neweggsupport@xfxforce.com for warranty servicing options.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't let my PC boot

Pros: N/A PC won't boot.

Cons: Prevents POST when used with ASRock H97M Pro4 mobo and XFX XTR Series P1-550B-BEFX 550W PSU. Possible compatibility issue.

1 rating due to absence of GPU compatibility info in manual.

Other Thoughts: Will update rating if I can get this to work.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Thomas,

We're sorry you are having issues with your GPU. If you still haven't gotten it to post, please contact us for support.

We are sure there is no compatibility issues with this card and that setup. Only really old motherboards may have compatibility issues, Pci-e 1.0 for example.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Freesync dynamic refresh rate capability

Pros: Fairly quiet under load

Don't look like recycled storm troopers have taken up residence in your windowed case.

Cons: Although they technically support Freesync or at least part of it, they do not support the updated display controllers that will support dynamic refresh rates during gaming. Which to me is what Freesync is all about.

Other Thoughts: Run two of these in Crossfire with an i5-4460, 12 GB RAM and couldn't be happier at the ability of them to render Ultra settings in BF4, Crysis and FarCry 4.

I am disappointed though that I cannot move into a Freesync capable monitor.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The 270x can run most modern games at 1920x1080 with medium/high settings at over 60 FPS. It can run graphics injectors (GEMFX/SweetFX/etc) with a hit but still be playable in single player.

Cons: The fans get a little loud under full load.

Other Thoughts: XFX sent me this card after my 2 1/2 year old 7870 died. Even though it was out of warranty they had me send my old card in, and they sent me this as a replacement. The people I talked to were very kind and helpful and I when I make my next upgrade it will be from XFX.

5 out of 5 eggsXFX Rocks

Pros: I got this card after an RMA of a Dual 4870 that gave up the ghost after 3 years of service. The 4870 was purchased used but had a double lifetime warranty. I was the second owner and XFX honored its warranty. The level of support I got goes above and beyond anything I have received anywhere.

Cons: I need to find a one owner 4870 again...

Other Thoughts: I have RMA'd one other product from them prior to this and it went very smoothly as well. I have used XFX video cards since then and have not been dissapointed with any of them.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review, we appreciate your positive feedback.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent upgrade for the price

Pros: I came from a 1gb XFX 6870, and it definitely was an upgrade. Gained about 20fps on every game, while being able to turn the settings up at higher values. Has good cooling, and XFX warranty. Basically a re-branded 7870. I'm running windows 10 just fine. Has DX12 support. Got it on sale for 165 bux.

Cons: Old architecture. only 2 gb ram, but i play on a 32" 1080p tv so this doesn't bother me. Only a modest upgrade from my 6870. Brand New games such as Witcher 3 can't be maxed out on this card without serious frame rate issues, however, it runs Witcher 3 on high 1080p at around 42-60 fps on an AMD 8350 setup.

Other Thoughts: xfx r9 270x

120gb gskill ssd

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Warranty, Even worst support staff

Pros: The card ran well, but for the price it was underpowered. Struggles on most AAA games but does decently. It's still the same price it was when I purchased it a year ago. I purchased this card along with several other XFX cards which I will be reviewing after my experience with their support staff.

Cons: I have been a HUGE supporter of XFX, and have used their GPU's exclusively since I was in high school. The one thing that has always made me choose XFX over literally any other brand was their warranty. I had heard that their warranty was great and their support staff was usually very helpful. Well, I tried using my warranty for my XFX 6950 I purchased years ago and they told me that I was out of luck without my invoice for the card, which I purchased almost 4 years ago. I registered the card on the XFX site, as I have with a few of my other cards, the day I purchased the card from an electronics store. I told them that since I purchased it at a electronic retail store and not an online retailer I couldn't get a copy of an invoice that old and didn't realize registration wasn't enough. They could see on their site that I registered the card with the correct serial code back in 2011, yet they said that doesn't prove I purchased the card when I did...

Despite me explaining it to their support staff, I was accused of trying to scam the company and the support staff who was taking care of my support ticket said I "could have just bought it used and tried to get the warranty". So, I've spent well over $2000 in my lifetime on these cards as through college I worked in my schools IT department and would often replace failing cards on clients computers with XFX cards. It's nice to see that when you actually DO need to use your warranty, you'd better have your original receipt or you'll be accused of being a criminal. Thanks XFX.

To top it all off, when I asked to have a member of management included on the support ticket, the person "helping" me told me they couldn't do that, and that I could just call and they would say the same thing, and that he "couldn't make himself more clear".

The way I was treated by the support staff was extremely disrespectful and unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: I feel like a fool for supporting such a terrible company. I'll never again buy an XFX product, and if anyone out there is like me and weighs the warranty policy heavily in your decision making process, I would say skip XFX and go with a different manufacturer.
