XFX Ghost Thermal 2.0 Technology

The New and Improved Floating Heatsink Design of XFX Graphics Cards Provides the Ultimate Cooling Solution

XFX's exclusive ghost thermal 2.0 design creates a floating heatsink with open airflow between the PCB and the cover so that air can quickly ventilate off the card while simultaneously cooling the core process and the components. We've also made major advances from our first generation which includes a heat tested light weight plastic to create an overall lighter thermal which reduces the physical strain on your GPU.

Up to 13db Quieter and 45°F (7°C) Cooler Than Our Competitors

The Exclusive XFX Double Dissipation Design is Cooler and Quieter than Others

XFX's exclusive dual fan double dissipation design utilizes two larger fans which run at slower RPM than comparable single fan solutions which must run at much higher RPMs just to barely achieve the same cooling needs. Because of this design, XFX is able to achieve up to 13db lower noise than the competitor while simultaneously increasing the overall cooling by 45°F (7°C).

Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines is the Difference Between Itty-Bitty Low-Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

5 out of 5 eggsAn absolute beast

Pros: Maxes out all graphic settings and at least gets 60 frames per second (Most games put a cap here). Easy to install. The light was a nice touch, it doesn't hurt for a high end card to look like a high end card.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Note: All review data is with 2 of these cards with Crossfire X.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggs2nd RMA incoming

Pros: Everything looking beautiful for 24 hours.

Cons: First card lasted 24 hours. Black screens and no resolve after clean installs, changed power configurations and looked at hundreds of threads about fixes. RMA'd and received new card in 1 week.

Now my 2nd card is doing the exact same thing after 1 day of very light use again! Didn't want to go as far as lowering voltage/memory of the card just to try and stabilize it. Tried everything the internets said, still no luck. RMA again i suppose...

Other Thoughts: Not sure if i want to replace this again from newegg or get a refund and switch to a 780.

5 out of 5 eggsGood GPU for the budget-conscious

Pros: -Works really well. Runs current games on Ultra settings with no problem.

-Bundled with 3 free games PLUS Civilization Beyond Earth.

Cons: -First card only worked for a day then it started restarting on it's own. Sadface. :(

Other Thoughts: Upgrading from a 6970 which was getting long in the tooth... that and the fans are giving out.

Decided to go for this one since it's bundled with a couple of games plus the upcoming Civ game.

Actually had a hiccup with the first card. Worked really well the first day. Then on the second day PC just turned off by itself with screen flickering. Uh-oh. Not a good sign. Restarted my PC and after 30 minutes of use, it just shut down by itself again.

I did all what I could: updated BIOS, reinstalled CCC/Beta, checked PSU wiring (and the PSU itself) but the condition still persisted. It got to the point where my PC can't detect the card anymore and yet i was still experiencing a shutdown with this GPU installed.

Had to return this card for a replacement.

The new card works like a charm now. It's just on day 4 though so Ill be keeping a close eye on it for a bit.

I would've docked an egg for the first bad card but stuff happens I suppose.

Just a head's up: make sure you have enough space/airflow in your case for this card because it's pretty big. And make sure your PSU is up to the task as well.

2 out of 5 eggsThought it was worth. Good card but rekt me with pricing.

Pros: Decent. Stays cool. Cool XFX glow effect. Good design. Wanted to give it at least 3 eggs but my PSU disagrees.

Cons: Figured something was up when I bought it. Now it's beyond that and dropped a great deal. And the release of the 8gb couldn't have been timed better. I really wish I had just waited, tbh I didn't even need this card just yet. The performance and such seem to have dimmed over the 2 months. After about a month really. Little bit glitchy here and there. Draws a lot of power? I think it is killing my 750w PSU because it was fine until I plugged this thing in and no matter what I do to adjust now the PSU is yelling "replace me!" and I really don't even want to bother with all that right now. Thought I made a good decision for the first few days after purchase over GTX 780 ti/980. I wanted to get away from nVIDIA but really it wasn't nVIDIA, it was my windows 7 that was the culprit. So once again I will just say there was absolutely no reason to get this card due to the 8gb release that is commencing now or already has launched.

Other Thoughts: I recommend you not buy this card. I would have sent back if I could but I have never returned a item in my life. 8GB version is new and almost same price. I guess the price can't drop any lower on this. But I definitely wouldn't buy it now. Don't think I ever made a good purchase over Newegg.com Do your research on newer version releases, or you could also be an unlucky buyer.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, We're sorry you are upset that the price was lowered. Unfortunately, in this market price drops happen all the time. its a slow steady peak that really only stops when its replaced. Sorry.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card, great company!

Pros: I purchased 2 cards for crossfire and I did not have any issues from my initial purchase! I am extremely happy about that and registered the cards at XFX. I like that you can switch between crossfire and single card use via catalyst and you don't have to reboot. The 290X runs smoothly and is quieter than I had thought, it does run fairly hot because I do get a warning by AI Suite II that it is over 60c (140F) but playing Shadow of Mordor at the highest settings for 2 hours was smooth and had no issues. Currently I always have crossfire on until a new game starts giving me issues and revert to a single card until a new patch is implemented. The company itself is great, I have used their products before and had no problems with their video cards, this was also why I purchased from them.

Cons: It ran hot for the first 3 weeks and it seemed to come down a bit where I did not receive anymore warnings. I'm not sure why but I am still trying to find that out from any patch update from AMD.

Other Thoughts: Prices are down, get these cards and you won't be disappointed. I do purchase a majority of items online and I have always found it better to contact the manufacturer rather than returning it back to the seller. I just found it easier that way because I get the product straight from the company and its peace of mind.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgraded 6 months ago!

Pros: Very Fast, Very hard working card, it's a beast!

Cons: None out of the 6 months I've had it.

Other Thoughts: Upgraded from a XFX Radeon Hd 7970. The 290x here Probably runs 1.5 times better than what I had. But this card is no joke, I've bench marked it for BattleField 4 and it pumps over 60 fps on ultra 1080p with some effort. Heat wise, its unnoticeable!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card Great Value

Pros: Very good card runs very well plays both assassins creed and dragon age inquisition at good tempatures. Very quiet card drivers are awesome.

Cons: Only two raptr is pretty bad the web services portal is very buggy but this is on AMD and not the hardware card... Also sticker peels off of the card when running computations for a few hours and the card starts to heat up. Easily fixed by removing sticker so I ask why use a sticker if it heats card up under extreme computations with algorithmic processing?

Other Thoughts: I may look into water cooling this card as fans really don't do any video card justice when doing GPU mathematics with MATLAB type applications. Only challenge is I have yet to find a sleeve that easily fits the R9x platform... If anybody can suggest one I am all ears and will be water cooling soon. Especially since all of my other components are cooled (CPU and kernel bypass networking cards)

2 out of 5 eggsNot Worth It!!!!

Pros: Looks cool? Has LED logo and it looks like an old VHS tape?

Cons: It runs about as well, maybe a little better, than my GTX 760!!! This card was supposed to be an upgrade, i.e. twice the VRAM, bit rate and processor... I want to throw this thing across the room right now bc another GTX 760 would have only cost me $215!! But then I wouldn't be able to RMA it!!!

Other Thoughts: Only get about 5 FPS more than on my EVGA GTX 760 and even had to turn the settings down from Ultimate to Very High in Far Cry 3! Also, you'd think with more VRAM and a better proc, it wouldn't have that drawing in graphics way after the they should have been there issue where it's like, "oops! forgot a few bushes... there, that's better!" Oh, and enemies disappearing in fights is awesome too!

Either the card I got is ****, or the card is **** in general! Either way, I really just want my money back so I can SLi in another GTX 760 or get the Gigabyte GTX 970 for $20 more!!! I really think I'd be better off and would get better stats with 2 760's with less VRAM :/ or with anything by NVIDIA for that matter, lol. Just frustrated and more than a little disappointed that this didn't improve anything

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Beautiful baseline-clocked card for $299 (with 4 free games). Glad the Bitcoin kids have finally moved on. I can't touch this thing at 1080p—may pick up a 4K display in a couple weeks and give it a workout.

Cons: No complaints so far, but I'm encouraged that others have praised XFX tech support. Just in case.

Other Thoughts: As some have pointed out, the XFX logo lights up a very bright white. Looks great in my blue/orange scheme, but it may not be for everyone.

Manufacturer Response:

You can turn the light off, simply unplug it under the heat shroud.

Thank you for the great review. We appreciate you sharing with others.
