XFX Ghost Thermal 2.0 Technology

The New and Improved Floating Heatsink Design of XFX Graphics Cards Provides the Ultimate Cooling Solution

XFX's exclusive ghost thermal 2.0 design creates a floating heatsink with open airflow between the PCB and the cover so that air can quickly ventilate off the card while simultaneously cooling the core process and the components. We've also made major advances from our first generation which includes a heat tested light weight plastic to create an overall lighter thermal which reduces the physical strain on your GPU.

Up to 13dB Quieter and 45°F (7°C) Cooler than Our Competitors

The Exclusive XFX Double Dissipation Design is Cooler and Quieter than Others

XFX's exclusive dual fan double dissipation design utilizes two larger fans which run at slower RPM than comparable single fan solutions which must run at much higher RPMs just to barely achieve the same cooling needs. Because of this design, XFX is able to achieve up to 13dB lower noise than the competitor while simultaneously increasing the overall cooling by 45°F (7°C).

Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty-Bitty, Low Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME!

Pros: AWESOME!

- I had last one 1 card for about a year and waited for the price to come down.
- I now have 2 of these in a Crossfire configuration.
- They are incredible.
- I can play any game at full settings at 1080p and still have plenty of resources available.
- My next project is to get a 4k monitor (when prices come down) and do some 4k gaming!

Cons: HOT! HOT! HOT!

- I have always noticed that the XFX cards run a little hotter.
- My CPU (FX-8150) also runs hot, and originally I used air to cool the box. This caused constant restarts, the inside temp would get out of control especially when the cards were under loan. I had to add liquid cooling to remediate this.
- I added CPU liquid cooling (CORSAIR H110) and my heating issues went away completely. I highly recommend it for any gaming machine.
- Although with the summer time now, these cards running anything "intense" (like GTA V, Far Cry 4, etc) the heat is expelled from the machine and into the room. With a hot summer this can boost the heat in a small office 10 degrees higher (very easily might I add) than what it should be, assuming you don't have AC.

Other Thoughts: Build:

- ASUS Crosshair V Formula
- AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 8-Core 3.6GHz (overclocked to 4.2Ghz); cooled with a CORSAIR Hydro Series H110
- G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (4gb x4) @ 2133
- XFX R9-290A-EDFD Radeon 4GB 512-Bit x2 in Crossfire (16x x2)
- ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner
- WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB x4 in RAID 0 (Read: 700mb Write: 650); for storage and games.
- SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB (OS Drive, Win 8.1)

3 out of 5 eggsGreat for the Money but...

Pros: Maxes out most games at 1080p ultra settings and still gets above 60 fps.
Relatively cheap for the performance you get.

Cons: HOT and LOUD
Idles at 42° -55°C at 20% fan speed and usually HIGH 80's °C at HIGH (80-100%) fan speeds under gaming load.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. It sounds like your card is running a little hot which may be an indicator that a fan is failing or you are getting very limited airflow to the case. This card is still within range, however later on, it could be come an issue. We have free replacement fans if you think this is the issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card!

Pros: Had this card since October. Havent had a single issue with it. Overclocks decently (Not that it really needs to be) and can run anything I throw at it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you want the best bang for your buck, buy this card. It's a little pricey but certainly worth it.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic but needs work

Pros: Runs BF4 ultra at 60+ fps and Witcher 3 at most settings ultra and still 60+ fps

Cons: BSOD'ed like no other the first time i plugged it in. Yes i used DDU and did everything else correct.

This card needs to be powered by Thor's lightning itself.

Other Thoughts: FIX: Must set PCI frequency in BIOS from AUTO to 110.

I didn't need too but you can change chipset voltage from AUTO to 1.3v if changing the PCI frequency alone does not work.

5 out of 5 eggsPower to spare

Pros: Works great
Runs cool *
Quiet *

Cons: Card sag (about half inch)
It is huge (is only a con if u have a small case)

Other Thoughts: The card is big in length and height, but it is worth the space.

I don't play the high demand games, so this thing breezes through everything I do.

* I had it set on defaults and the hottest it ever got was 52C.. I wanted to OC the memory so I set it on manual fan speed and turned it up until I could hear it over the CPU cooler, then dialed it back until it went silent. With the fan at 60% is silent and idle temps are 37-39C. and it has never gone above 44C. since. (memory at 1350 OC)

Used a piece half inch PVC (painted black) to brace the end and it looks like it was designed that way, looks sweet even w/o a back plate.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, but...

Pros: Absolutely the best card at this price point. I get 45 fps in The Witcher 3 at 1440p on ultra and hairworks on. Way better performance than I expected.

Cons: Runs very hot, which I knew already (no eggs deducted)
No active VRM cooling, which I also knew
Periodically, when the computer sleeps, I can no longer get an image to appear once I wake it up. The only solution is to turn off the power at the PSU, and hard reboot. Turns out, this is common on 290(x) cards.

Other Thoughts: I would have deducted 2 eggs for the nuisance of having to disconnect my PC from its power, but the performance is so great that it outshines any of its other flaws.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrecting a Grievous Error

Pros: I would like to correct a grievous error. When I wrote my previous review of this video card I was angry and frustrated after spending so much money on it. I've since come to the realization that the problem was not with the video card but with my motherboard. I've had two motherboards' PCI Express 3.0 x16 video card Expansion Slots fail in less than a year.
Now that I have this card installed on a quality motherboard it runs like a champ. I'm playing games with all the settings at max and the dual fans on this card just barely speed up. I'm so happy with it.

Cons: absolutely none

Other Thoughts: Learn form my mistake and get a good quality gaming motherboard to mount this in. You will save yourself a lot of grief.

Thank you for the great review! We appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsBest bang for your buck

Pros: Such a fantastic card for the money. Runs everything I throw at it on Ultra settings at 1080p with good amounts of AA (Even though it seems this cards true sweet spot is 1600x900). Here are some examples of performance to be expected(Mine is overclocked so keep that in mind also see cons section)

Skyrim with ENB with all shaders enabled @1080p 50-60 fps outside 70-100 fps inside

Battlefield 4 Ultra settings 1080p MSAAx4 HBAO - 45-100 fps

Crysis Max Settings MSAAx2 1080p - 30-70 fps

Cons: Apparently I lost the silicon lottery when it comes to this specific card as I've seen people get overclocks of up to 1125mhz on the core and 1500mhz on the memory. The most I can squeeze out of mine is 1040mhz on the core and 1387mhz on the memory. Also while it idles at sub 40c this thing can go up to 87c under load. Not super hot for Hawaii based chips but still.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor physical strength, dead after 9 months

Pros: This is very powerful card. It had no problem playing Skyrim or MechWarrior Online with all the settings at max.

Cons: The card could not support its own weight and would bend until it lost connection with the socket. I had to improvise a support. It died after about 9 months.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Gregory,

We're sorry you are having issues with your 290. The card should be properly screwed and mounted on the brackets of the case. Has this been resolved via warranty servicing yet?

If you have any questions, please let us know

5 out of 5 eggsBest bang for buck

Pros: 1. Best bang for buck GPU currently available.

2. Idles in my system at 35c

3. Highest load temp seen was 72c (in Dirt Rally)

4. Fans have never gone over 40%. It is barely audible in my case.

5. Runs any (well optimized) game on market at 1080p on Ultra settings with acceptable frame rates

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I chose this GPU after reading several articles and also taking advice from a local friend who has another brand R9 290. This is the first time I have strayed from Nvidia and I couldn't be happier.

My system:

Mobo: MSI Gaming 5 z97
Cpu: i5 4690k
Gpu: XFX DD R9 290
Ram: HyperX Fury Black series (16gb)
Psu: Rosewill Photon 1050
Aio: Corsair H100i GTX
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (w/ window)

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the great review, we appreciate the kind words.

If you have any questions, please let us know.
