Improved Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing MSAA Technology

Smooth Lines Make All the Difference Between Itty Bitty, Low-Quality Graphics Versus Smooth Realistic Graphics

MSAA smooths out the jagged edges of a curved object. A black curved line on a white background displayed on a computer screen will have some jaggedness along its edges due to the inherent limitations of using discrete pixels to display the image. Anti-aliasing smooths out this jaggedness by filling in the white spaces between the jagged edges with varying shades of gray which gives you the smooth soft shadows, crisp sharp lines of buildings, and crisp tiny details in clothing that make your experience truly realistic.

2 out of 5 eggsPowerful card, beautiful graphics, had to RMA

Pros: I bought this card one year ago at a price point very close to where it is now. It's nice feel like I got a great deal and this line of cards is holding its value in the market.

It's powerful and I haven't run across a game yet where I cannot max out the graphics and have it still run smoothly. Skyrim most notably, but I haven't been playing the latest and greatest and I'm running 1920x1080 monitors.

Cons: 6 months in this card wouldn't post. Just a blank screen and power-up loop, popped in another card and everything was fine. Alright, fine, time to RMA. Process was easy enough, but I have to spend 20$ on shipping. Ah well.

Other Thoughts: I'll give this card and XFX more eggs when I get my replacement card and it lasts. For now this XFX card is just one product in a line of supposedly high-quality goods I've bought recently that didn't go the distance. Thank goodness for warranties. Make sure you register within 30 days. I didn't see that stipulation and missed, so I'm guessing I'm out of luck if this replacement card doesn't last.

5 out of 5 eggsXFX Double D Radeon R9 280 R9-280A-TDFD 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 CrossFireX Support Video Card

Pros: XFX. UEFI BIOS capable. Excellent build quality and appearance. It is silent. Price. It installed easily and performs flawlessly. I am not a gamer so no comment there. I wanted a fully compatible GFX card for a new X99 build to drive a 1440p monitor and have bit perfect audio pass through. When components work flawlessly it is hard to evaluate their true overall value. This card does it's thing with perfect harmony with the rest of the components around it. It runs cool so no heat issues. I like equipment that works right with no problems. This card is a winner.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this unit to anyone wanting reliable equipment for the reasons listed.
Sincerely,
Walt Prill

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to 3 Egg review

Pros: With the new card t hey sent to replace the one having issues, I am having 0 problems. I didn't realize it at the time, but checking the logs I made with the old card it was running at 60C at idle so there was a hardware problem evidently.

Now I am running Dragon Age Inquisition on all ultra, and all the AA options maxed out with 30+ FPS. BF4 - same thing, all maxed out. Amazing card. Running perfectly now.

Cons: I was not happy about having to pay $20 for an RMA for a card that didn't work right straight out of the box, but I am happy with the RMA service itself. I was worried at first honestly, but evidently I didn't need to be as XFX took care of me nicely.

Other Thoughts: Unbelievable price to performance comparison. Awesome buy!

3 out of 5 eggsGreat card, but had to RMA

Pros: The card itself is good looking. Nice finish, sleek design. The fan air flow from the dual fans blows a good amount of air and has kept the card cool even under high load over prolonged gaming. I haven't recorded a temp over 62 C in any conditions. Noise level is low, although I have 5 fans in my full size tower, so I may not be noticing the sound associated with the fans i the GPU. No whine, no obvious ramping up under load. Overall good design physically.

The card works well and is giving me really good frame rates. Setting just about everything on ultra outside of Tesselation, which is beyond this card to run at ultra for what I play (BF4, DAI). Getting 40 FPS+ in every game I play.

Installation was pretty easy and uneventful. The card requires an 8 pin and a 6 pin GPU power plug. Although it includes converters to go from molex to these pin combos, the instructions specifically say to not use the card unless you have native 8 and 6 pin connectors from your PSU. I'm using a TX750 from corsair and power didn't appear to be a problem at all.

Registration was easy. BE SURE TO REGISTER WITHIN 30 DAYS if you want the lifetime warranty! I bought this as a birthday present but wasn't going to give it before the 30 days were up so I pulled it out, grabbed the serial number and registered it within the time period to insure the coverage.

There are two DVI ports in the back. I couldn't find anywhere, instructions, manual, or internet which to use and eventually discovered that the card will auto-select and use whatever is connected on boot up so it didn't end up mattering, Lol. One is red and one is white. Perhaps this matters in a multi-display setup more? Not sure. Running a single 24inch at the moment.

This was a major upgrade from the HD4970 I had before it. Although an amazing card, the new R9 280 blew it away. Huge improvement, very happy with that side of it.

Cons: I got this card after researching a lot of power to price point data. I've liked XFX for their warranty and how well the last card I bought worked. (An HD 4870, yeah - it has been a a while since I updated my GPU!) After rebate the card was very reasonably priced. My rig is fairly updated with a new MB, Mem, SSD, etc. Processor is a bit old (Phenom X4 955 BE), but that is oldest part of the system.

Problems came in when I first installed, hence the first dropped egg. In 2-D applications and on the desktop I was getting horizontal lines flickering all over the place. Not all the time, but enough to be really obnoxious. After much trouble shooting and trying 5-6 driver versions (with driver cleaning between installations) determined it wasn't something a better driver could fix. Using GPUz determined that getting the card to come out of down-clocking mode made the lines go away.

In older 3-D applications I got some odd artifacts at times. Lines would project out of objects when viewed from some angles. This would disappear if you closed the game and loaded it back up again most times. Skyrim, Portal 2, etc....

So at this point I figured, bad card - no problem. It happens, RMA and all will be well. I had already sent in the UPC for the rebate offered, so I couldn't RMA to Newegg. It was also more than 30 days since I purchased the card as, mentioned before, birthday present. So I contact XFX support, wait 3 days for return contact, send in more info under my support ticket because I hadn't heard from them and had tried a few more troubleshooting ideas in the mean time.

Got a response of : Upgrade your bios, default your memory settings, and manually set your pagefile.

BIOS was already at most current (Feb2015), Corsair Mem was at default settings, and I went ahead and specified a nice pagefile range although I have no idea why a 3 Gb card would be influenced by this. I let them know that this didn't help and asked the tech in a return message through the support ticket what his thoughts were given I had no idea where the swap file size would figure into artifacting at low clock speeds.

I looked up a phone number to call tech support through a google search as there wasn't one I could find on the XFX website and got a guy who was pretty helpful. He agreed pretty quickly that this seemed like a hardware issue and issued an RMA.

Second egg off is for the fact that it cost me $20 to ship this card back to get checked/fixed when it didn't work straight out of the box. $15 for the lowest level shipping rate and the rest to insure it in case it breaks in transit. I appreciate the price I got on Newegg a great deal, and understand it wasn't nearly this inexpensive anywhere else, but adding that cost to the price felt really unfair.

Other Thoughts: Specs:

ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 MB
8Gb Corsair DDR 3 1333
PNY 250 Gb SSD
Various non-SSD drives
XFX HD4970 until RMA comes back

Hoping that the RMA folks find the issue quickly and get it back to me quickly. Off for summer vacation only and was counting on some gaming time before going back to work!

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Cory, we're sorry you are having issues with your 280...

Please email neweggsupport@xfxforce.com so I can start your RMA.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME CARD!!!

Pros: I am an IT Administrator, with a background and degree in Audio Engineering, and Networking. Because I was mainly interested in editing, mixing, and recording sound and music growing up, I never really spent the money on a higher end graphics card. I always had a half way decent one, so that I could display 3 monitors for mixing in protools, and play games on low settings every now and again. Especially in college with the gaming.

But still, I never really got to enjoy having a higher end graphics card... UNTIL NOW!!! I know this isn't the newest and best Graphics Cards. But I currently couldn't justify spending $500 on the newest and greatest card. I could however Justify spending $150 after my $20 mail in rebate. My only regret is I wish I would have waited an extra week to purchase it, because I saw the 290X was on sale on NewEgg today for like $200, and I'm thinking now If I saw that when I ordered this, I probably would have went for that.

But it doesn't matter, because so far, I am COMPLETELY HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE. I needed a new video card, as my old cheap AMD card, that no one has ever heard of, kept causing BSOD on my custom build. I thought it was the memory for about a week until I finally took the time to start studying my dump files, which pointed me to bad memory on the card itself.

And, I was able to justify spending money on a much better card, by telling my self that getting a better card would make something stupid like causing BSOD errors would be much less likely, basically you get what you pay for, and in this case I think I got more.

I honestly don't get the time to play much games, but I do get to work from home pretty often. It depends on whether or not I can fix a problem remotely, or if my presencse is actually required on site. This week, I was able to fix almost every problem remotely, which left a lot of time to play with a bunch of my new toys, Including this new graphics card. I think the fact that I can play all my old games from the early to mid 2000 on Ultra High, even with 4K resolution, for those that support it, Is freaking BAD A-$-$. But that was to be expected, as the newest of those games was like 2008.

The real test was GTA5. Which I have on the PS3, and got to take 2 weeks off to beat back when it first came out in 2013. But I haven't really played it since. And the other day I was at a friends house who had the game on a Xbox One, and I WAS AMAZED at the level of detail. I was used to it on a PS3, and he was at a part of the map that had grass and water in the scene, and it looked almost real! I was really blown away by the difference in graphics compared to my PS3. Then he told me, "You think this is good, Look at it on PC with an Awesome graphics card, then you'll really be amazed!"

Continued In "Other Thoughts"

Cons: No Cons, This Card is Great!

Other Thoughts: I really hate some of my rich friends. I'm always working so DAM much trying to pay off student loans from over 10 years ago, and they get to round all day smoking and playing video games, because daddy was smart enough to buy shares in A-m-a-z-o=n when we were in high school. GRRRR

Anyways, my point to all this is, since then, I have been wanting to see it on a good graphics card. So I purchased the game when I purchased this card. And although I can't play it on ultra High settings without loosing too much FPS, I can play it on pretty dam High settings, and my rich and Lazy friend was right, it does look GREAT!!! And it plays Great!! And the best thing is the dam thing never even gets that hot! I got to play for about 6 hours straight last night, I fell asleep without even pausing the dam thing, and woke up in the morning getting shot at by the police, I paused and checked the temperature of the card and cpu, and the card was only at 48 Degrees Celcius, my CPU was at 42C, which is a little high for my CPU, it normally peaks at 39 with my cooling system, but that still is pretty dam good!!!

I also edited a Video with this graphics card in Vegas Video, and I actually got to use the Graphics card feature of Vegas Video which was nice. I got to edited a video with 10 different video tracks, and 24 audio tracks for a client, and never even had to do a prerender to be able to play the video straight through while in the editing process. And even with my 24GB's of ram, I usually have to do the prerender to disk option about every 45 minutes, so definitely having this card for low level video editing like I do sometimes now is Nice.

Anyways, long story short, This card is great for Mid Level gaming on newer games, and high level gaming on older games. And has enough onboard ram and memory bandwidth to be a pretty big help for Video Editors too. Of course might not be enough for a full on video editing studio, but good enough for a home studio, and quiet enough too. I give this 5 EGGS!!!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Great for Crossfire dual graphics card set

Cons: AMD brand, be aware with Nvidia optimized games.

Other Thoughts: Ideal standard graphics card

Manufacturer Response:

Hey David,

Thank you for the great review, we appreciate your positive feedback. The optimized Nvidia games usually only benefit from Physx, which AMD compensates for with Direct X 11 anyway.
