4 out of 5 eggsGood once it got a new firmware

Pros: The card seems fine and runs games well, I'm getting great frame rates, and it's dead quiet, which was my primary concern; i have noctua fans in case and when the thing is in full-sprint game mode, it's barely audible.

Tech support was a bit of a nightmare, see below:

Cons: Quite large - measure your case before trying to install. Tech support is pretty bad.

Other Thoughts: Upon install i got lots of random "black screens" - picture would drop out for 5-10 seconds, programs and audio would still running, then picture would re-appear. Was really maddening when trying to play games.

Emailed support, the sent me two files and said "flash the bios". That's it. No instructions. I emailed back and politely asked what to do with those files, that netted me a new email with a PDF that had some basic instructions. The PDF reference a file-uploading utility, took a third email to get that - but the uploading utility was for a different card!

The "fix" for the support guys, after about a dozen emails, was to remove the bios files for the uploader's card, replace them with the two files from the first email, burn that to a bootable DOS USB stick, and type in a command code.

Which didn't work.

So another email and they said "well, the files are different, so you need to use a different command, obviously".

In the end, I sent about 20 different emails and spent about 4 hours trying to figure out what these incommunicative dolts were trying to get me to do. I'm first to admit that I'm primarily a Mac user, I built a PC for gaming, so this is not a process I'm used to, but even for tech-saavy PC users this was maddening.

But come on, if you ship a card with clearly broken firmware, and you expect end users to fix your problems, can you take 5 minutes to put all the files people need into a single ZIP file and actually bother to write directions for that specific card?

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Card

Pros: Very stable card, even at some high overclock values and voltage at 1.31 volts. I have 2 of these, 1 for me and one for the wife and both work flawlessly.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I can't attest to how well the stock cooler on this works as I put a water cooling system in.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat performance, Coil whine

Pros: I bought this to go in crossfire with my other R9 290x. Fantastic performance.

Cons: After adding second card I am getting what I think people describe as coil whine. A loud high pitch sound when under high graphics load. (3dmark and Dragon age Inquisition) If I turn down the graphics settings in DA the whine stops.

Other Thoughts: I am waiting on a support ticket with Sapphire to see if any thing can be done. hopefully I wont run out of time if I have to RMA.

3 out of 5 eggscompatibility mode

Pros: Very fast. Runs good in my racing games with high frame rate very cool.

Cons: 1) Vibration noise: Had to remove the outer bezel witch was vibrating against the inner plastic frame. It was very noisy. I'm sure this is a design flaw. 2) Only works if UEFI is set to compatibility mode with my ASUS Crosshair-V Formula-Z with Rev 2101 bios (Latest).

Other Thoughts: The heat pipes hang a long way off the back of the card. It's the first time I've had to remove the spare hard drive cage in order to get the card to fit. Removing the metal bezel cover doesn't seem to effect performance. It seems that it's only purpose is aesthetics and doesn't effect air flow in any way. I'm not really thrilled with this card because of these minor problems. I had a Sapphire R9-280X Dual-X OC edition that worked perfectly with the UEFI bios. So I don't understand why the older card works with full UEFI benefits but this one doesn't.

5 out of 5 eggsMulti-monitor/ GPU compute

Pros: I have this card running on an Asus Rampage IV Black edition with an Intel Extreme I7-3960X with 48GBs of DDR3-1866 RAM. Multi-monitor and GPU compute performance far exceeds my needs.

Cons: Even though the air cooler is one of the quieter ones, it still can be very annoying when GPU under load. I removed the OEM cooler and installed the appropriate EK Full Cover water block. Noise, clocks, performance are FAR better.

Other Thoughts: I have this card running on an Asus Rampage IV Black edition with an Intel Extreme I7-3960X with 48GBs of DDR3-1866 RAM. Multi-monitor and GPU compute performance far exceeds my needs.

2 out of 5 eggsSeriously disappointed.

Pros: Looked nice.
Ran great (for almost 3 weeks)

Cons: It just died. Out of nowhere and for seemingly no reason, it just went to black screen and after several attempts to get it working, it just wouldn't have it. Sometimes I would get to a login screen, other times I wouldn't. Never could get past it though before it went to Black Screen.

Other Thoughts: Bought this on 10/25, got it 10/30, but didn't get it installed until 11/7, and it ran great until 11/27 when it just decided to die.
I wasn't Overclocking it, was even using an 850w power supply to give it a little headroom over the recommended 750w, and I never ran any of my games past "high".

Personal note as to why this sucks -
I got up on Thanksgiving morning wanting to play some games on the first day off I've got in a while and !BAM!, D*** thing craps out 2 days after Newegg's 30day policy ends and since it is Thanksgiving day, I can't even get a hold of them to do anything about it.
Will definitely be on the phone first thing tomorrow and hopefully either Newegg or Sapphire can make this right.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy

Pros: Cheap

Cons: This card sucks. If your thinking of spending this much on a video card go with Nvidia. So far I had to reinstall Windows because a driver error caused the screen to go black and would not vew screens in safe mode wither. Then it crashes all the time playing any new games, Titanfall, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty Ghosts, you name it. It goes to blue screen then has to reboot. Also while im in these games the graphics look hazy, like there is a haze on your glasses or something. And it's glitchy. Apparently all AMD cards are this way because AMD drivers suck. Does not happen with Nvidia. Also I didn't open this and wanted to return Newegg would not take it back, even though in the add they said they would take it back till January 5th because of Xmas. Bull shizzer

Other Thoughts: Do not buy AMD. You'll think to yourself like I did, well Nvidia only has 2gb of ram at this price point and I get double the stream processors vs. 1200 Cuda Cores. Well Nvidia just flat out has no issues and is better to use. Even there software to monitor your card is better. AMD's you can't do anything with. If you want to find out what the safe max is to run your card at, you have to guess. With Nvidia you just hit a button that says BEST CONFIGURATION FOR THIS PC. Or whatever it says.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent performance with minimal noise

Pros: I bought the Tri-X R9 290x early 2014, and it has performed very well. I have used to for some gaming and altcoin mining (like bitcoin, but coins that use different algorithms) and it has done very well. Sapphire has an outstanding (if not the best) cooling solution for the R9 290 series (unlike asus they didn't recycle a cooler designed for a nvidia gpu (the nvidia chip is a different size) which means that the Sapphire cooler actually fits the gpu properly easy ring excellent cooling through good contact. My mining usage is more intense than the average gamers usage, yet the sapphire cooler handles the load very well and some how manages to avoid sounding like a jet engine at the same time. The card is also an excellent overclocker and is one of the few (if not only) single gpu cards that can break 1 gigahash on the scrypt algorithm (sapphire uses top of the line Hynix memory on this card which definitely helps). All in all I would definitely recommend this card to others, it truly is a beast.

Cons: The card is relatively large and there for won't fit in a small case (or even many middle sized cases); however why would you put this beauty in a small case?
