3 out of 5 eggsNo overclocking this one for me.

Pros: Fast and reasonably quiet. I find that fan noise is only noticeable above about 60% on my system, and it stays well below this during normal operation (not gaming).

Cons: I've found that I must underclock this card to 700MHz to get it to run stably in Crysis.

My system is well-cooled (system temps are around 40C and CPU temps around 35C at maximum load), but even if I manually set the fan to 100% I get display corruption at full clock speed. This corruption occurs when Catalyst is reporting the card temperature to be about 70-72C maximum at 750MHz. With it underclocked to 700MHz maximum temp is around 65C, and I don't see corruption.

However, I'm finding that 700MHz gives acceptable performance.

Other Thoughts: Fan control and overclocking is easy using AMD's Catalyst control center.

I'm running this with Vista X64 and the 8.10 Catalyst drivers. My system has 4GB RAM, and a Q6600 CPU at stock clock speed.

Most of the reviews I read for this card and other 4870 cards seem to indicate I should not get corruption at 72C, so I wonder if there is a problem with my card. This seems especially possible since others are reporting good overclocking with this card.

Manufacturer Response:

This is not good. You should have to underclock the card. Please fill out the return form at and let me replace it for you.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome card

Pros: Gpu keeps very cool in a warm room on load @ 59 C. Just like the other reviewr said you can overclock to 800 core clock but can go further as I have mine at 830 and memory 1160 played cysis excellent fan speed 71% gpu stay @ 41 c on idle

Cons: no crossfire bridge but you can email palit to get them free of charge they sent me two after they told me I didnt need two for two cards

Manufacturer Response:

Glad you like the card! Not including the bridge saves people money on the card and helps the environment since most people just throw them away.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing but theres a cost

Pros: Amazing card. Runs cool, fast and reliably. Intially ran quietly as well. Core runs stable at 800 if you would like to overclock. I personally see no reason to go up to that when the card runs at 775 in turbo mode.

Cons: After awhile (few weeks) the small fan, which has no speed other than 100%, starts to die a slow and whiny death. Initially it was barely audible but the rattling got worse as days progressed. I solved the problem by unplugging the small fan altogether and used riva to fix my large fan speed to 69%(for some reason this speed is far quieter than 70%). Card idles at 46C and reaches 59C Max during gaming and heating tests(ATITool fur cube) with the new settings. Whats funny is that it idled at 50C with the small fan running at 100% and the large one being regulated by temps. Max temps went slightly above 60C with its original configuration.

Other Thoughts: I jumped the gun and got the non-hdmi output version of this card for 5 bucks more. Oh well i dont need an hdmi output anyways with an adapter. Give the fans some test runs on temps with the case closed and you will see that the small fan is really not necessary and will only cause pain in the future. The small fan didnt fail, I just unplugged it before it had a chance to. The small fan is all show, no go.

Manufacturer Response:

Boooo. Sorry about the fan problem.

Please return this card for replacement. BTW, we don't have any more of this model and would have to replace it with the newer version.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great performance, good value!

Cons: Palit loses an egg due to customer service. The card is great, but the company leaves a little to be desired.

Other Thoughts: I ordered two Palit AE=4870S+0452 Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail in September, just over a month from writing this review. Those cards only had the Display Port option and when I contacted Palit to see if there was an HDMI alternative out or in the works I was told there wasn't. Less than a month later these cards are released with HDMI. There is no upgrade option (like with BFG Tech) and when I contacted Palit to see if it was possible to do a return/exchange (I would pay shipping and any difference) I was ignored before finally receiving a rather sarcastic email about a week later. So I am stuck with the cards I ordered. If I would have known that this model was coming out I would definitely have waited and picked up two of these instead.

That being said these cards are amazing and the dual BIOS is awesome. Mine runs in Turbo all the time and I have no issues with heat or noise.

Manufacturer Response:

I'm really surprised to hear about a bad service experience. I'm usually on top of stuff like this.

Please request an RMA and include this response in the notes. I'm sorry you had a hard time and I'll swap these out for you.

5 out of 5 eggsROCKS!!!

Pros: Faster than my 8800GS. Shorter than a standard 4870 and saves SATA ports. Seriously fast.
@1280x1024, you can play Crysis with the ULTRA quality mod at 30-40 fps. Absolutely lovely!

Cons: Non reference board = harder to volt mod.
Oh well. Doesn't overclock much. Only 100% stable at 800core.

Other Thoughts: THe dual bios is brilliant. I tried to bios mod and card and BAM!!! Bricked.
Just reach around and flick the swith, reboot, and you're back in business.
I love this card!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Ouch! Bricking the card=bad. Glad it's working out for you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card!

Pros: I have a CM690 Case with 7 120-140mm Case Fans, So far its hard to hear anything even at 100% load. This is the second version of the card, I guess they improve it, if you were to check on other Brand for HD4870, they all have similar setup. 1xvga 1xdvi 1xhdmi and 1xdisplayport.

Cons: The heat is not bad. I didn't have to use fan fix, since I don't hear much difference between this and the 9600gt I had before. But thats just me. I was going to unplug the 2nd fan if its too loud.

Other Thoughts: Upgrade from a xfx 9600gt. They are the same length! Had issue trying to uninstall Nvidia Drivers, so that the card display under windows. I think all the problem people are reporting is probably due to software conflicts.

Manufacturer Response:

Glad you like the card!

AFAIK there is no other 4870 with Display port and only one other that has an HDMI port. everything else requires an adapter.
