2 out of 5 eggsNot Windows 7 x64 friendly

Pros: Beautiful HD image, hardware has held up for almost a year so far.

Cons: Every time I close Windows Media Center with this running, it crashes the computer. Yes, I'm using the latest drivers ( The latest Aver Media Center works, but is buggy. If you're running 64 bit, best find a different product. Looks to me like Avermedia has abandoned this product and couldn't care less that its drivers aren't 64-bit compliant.

Other Thoughts: I've also tried every other tv tuner software I can find, none of them seem to be able to find this device or it's not supported. There is some talk about newer versions of Media Player making it impossible for some of these programs to see the tuner. I just know I can't get this thing to play nice with Win7-64.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Addition

Pros: A great addition that allows you to watch television on a computer.

Cons: Reception is limited due to the bottleneck effect of USB. A tuner card would be better suited to attain the best possible reception.

Despite this, I am still able to receive all the channels that are available in my area, albeit I live approximately 10 miles away from the broadcast tower. However, I sometimes experience the cliff effect. Most of the time though, channels come in clear.

Other Thoughts: I originally bought this for my laptop. I now use this for my desktop. I would have bought a tuner card for it but this is still working great, despite its USB limitations.

Since it is a USB card, the limitations that come with it are to be expected, so I did not deduct any eggs.

I am using Windows 7 64-bit and the drivers that are available on AVerMedia's website work fine.

3 out of 5 eggsBetter than nothing

Pros: - now I can watch live sports again!
- USB extension cord is a nice addition in cramped USB port space
- works with Windows Media Center or it's own software (eventually)

Cons: - extra install work for Vista x64 + MCE users
- included antenna is neither powerful enough or compact enough for real use
- disc with install apps/drivers/user manuals is worthless to Vista x64 users

Other Thoughts: This product is only as good as the antenna you hook it up to. Right now (in Minneapolis) I can get 3-4 channels with this product and a cheap indoor antenna.

I use Vista x64 with Windows Media Center and I made the mistake of installing the apps and data on the included disc. Don't do it! x64 owners will get the BSOD. Use the site newegg forwards you for software upgrades.

As I'm writing this, Vista x64 Home Premium works with the downloaded files:

App: A868_MCS. (the app for sure; I installed 'custom' and did not use the driver in this package)

So the product works, but it's overpriced for the mess you may have to go through to get it to work.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Fairly inexpensive way to watch free over the air HDTV on a PC. Works great in Windows 7 RC 64-bit after installing the 64-bit driver from Aver's website. Media Center recognized it with no problems and programmed all the local stations in my area. Image quality is excellent on my Dell 24" Widescreen Full HD monitor.

Cons: No remote control.

Tried it on Windows XP Pro with Aver's own Media Software but had a lot of freezes/crashes. I would only recommend using this product with a Media Center Edition of Windows.

Other Thoughts: The USB stick gets a little warm to the touch. The included antenna looks rather cheap but not a big deal since I'm using a pair of rabbit ears.

1 out of 5 eggsBlue Screens of Death in Vista 64bit

Pros: Works great in my old Vista 32 Bit system. Unfortunately I am selling that system and bought it to work with my windows Vista 64 Bit System.

Cons: I downloaded the latest drivers and software for Vista 64bit as directed. Company claims it is 64 bit ready. Sadly it just ain't so. This clearly is not Vista 64 Bit compatable. Repeatedly causes Blue Screens of Death. My system drastically exceeds the minimum requirements, so the problem is not my computer. This item is headed back...product not as advertised.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: The device is very easy to set up. I installed the drivers and plugged in the device and Windows Media Center on 32 bit Vista recognized the device right away and started scanning for channels. I can get all the major networks in my area with the included antenna; however I only live 2 miles away from the broadcast towers.

Cons: The device heats up quickly.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is amazing. I ordered on Wednesday and the package arrived the next day with standard free shipping.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: clear quality signal

Cons: this device ONLY picks up over-the-air signals, which means that if you are trying to hook it up to your cable using a coaxial, it won't work. it is completely useless. it only picks up a few digital channels, none of which are interesting at all.

Manufacturer Response:

AVerTVHD Volar is only for Over-The-Air Digital Broadcast ATSC and we clearly mark this on retail box/product description.
Please check with for Digital channels in your area. Keep in mind that after Digital TV transition in June 12, 2009 your local TV Broadcast station will broadcast only Digital TV Signal (ATSC) and you might have a stronger Digital TV Signal

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy to setup with Vista and works well with Media Center... The tuner picked up all of my local channels without a problem. The controls are easy to understand on the included software and it encodes in mpeg2 so you can convert the video for any portable device.

Cons: The software forces my display setting to the basic level. Its not a big deal but it is annoying. The recording function is very, very simple. I wish it had more functionality.
