5 out of 5 eggsGreat Unit

Pros: Superb 1080i video quality, especially at 20Mbps. Small foot print.

Cons: Difficulty using the TV Scheduler

Other Thoughts: I don't understand one of the reviewers who complains that you can't record HD from composite input (standard definition only) or using a SD (standard definition only)cable. That's an oxymoron. There is no such thing---it's impossible. How is that a disadvantage/con? That's like trying to record video from an audio input. The same reviewer rates himself as 5 stars regarding Tech Knowledge. The people who criticize this unit and call it junk have't taken the time to learn how to setup the unit properly.

1 out of 5 eggsNonsense

Pros: none

Cons: Can't record HD from composite or SD cable!!

Other Thoughts: Does ANYONE have an HD in - HD out capture device with either USB or HDMI output to the laptop/pc?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

AVerTV USB HD DVR supports 1080i HD signal using the component inputs. You can connect an HD source with component cables to the USB HD DVR and connect it to your laptop using USB. This will allow you to record 1080i HD signal to your laptop.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: It's easy to set up, and the software is pretty intuitive. Nothing feels overwhelming and the resulting files are very high quality.

Cons: The attachment cables are a tiny bit larger than they should be - one audio cable doesn't fit as easily into the corner input.

Other Thoughts: It was a great purchase and I'd do it again easily.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, with a single flaw

Pros: Worked great. Installed the drivers from the online site, and installed the software with the included disc.
Worked the first time! No issues.
The converter works fine! Isn't that clunky or hard to understand as I've seen mentioned in other reviews.

Cons: Cannot Stream online. I tried using Adobe Media Flash Live Encoder as well as many cam, and its format is not accepted by the programs. So streaming online gameplay on this device is a no go.

Having to convert the files in the first place is annoying. It saves them in .ts, so I have to run them through the converter to be able to work with them on programs. (After Effects, Premiere, Vegas)

Other Thoughts: For the price, its uality and ease of use is amazing.
Yet, for the ability to not stream online, kind of a bummer. I know that won't affect some peoples judgements though, so I highly reccomend this device. The software works, and I love it for the price I paid. The only reason I didn't give a 5 is because it cannot stream online!

3 out of 5 eggsGreat recordings

Pros: Sleek, fast, nice looking, fast encode, no skips, great value

Cons: All my usb devices crawled and became unusable after installing the drivers. I had to get a PS/2 mouse so I am able to move my mouse pointer as since my USB mouse works intermittently after installing the software.

Other Thoughts: I got this on sale, and was my first AverMedia device. It look great, and was a nice blend for my htpc, Didn't install the drivers that came with the box as I prefer the newer drivers from the manufacturer website. After installing the drivers and software, my mouse/keyboard became sluggish and would intermittently stop working. Each time I move the mouse around it would move a bit, and then stop. When I press a button on the keyboard, the mouse works again, but only for a couple of seconds. Same with the keyboard, it will work for a few secs, then stop.

Tried to uninstall the drivers, and install the one that came with the CD, and it was still the same problem. Eventually I tried the "Dark Crystal" USB driver versions which comes with a NEWER driver, and the USB mouse, seems to work a seconds more, but would eventually stop.

Did a search on Google, and no one has actually complained about this. So I'm assuming it's a compatibility problem...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Make sure that you are using the latest drivers for AVerTV USB HD DVR which is version 1.0.X.13 from http://www.avermedia-usa.com/AVerTV/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=488&tab=APDriver

Remove the currently installed drivers, insert the unit into another USB port and then reinstall the drivers. Check to see if the other USB devices work.

1 out of 5 eggsDetects/Records for only 1min

Pros: Does HD recordings
Can record from pretty much any type of input I have.

Cons: Only recordable from included software (Arcsoft Total Media Extreme).
Even after updating the program and drivers, Arcsoft Total Media Extreme would detect the video input (in this case from my Wii via composite cables) and after one minute I get a blank screen and no more audio.

Other Thoughts: After further review of my system, a Lenovo Y550, uninstalling AVG seemed to make the detection issue go away but now the recordings now have interlacing issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Please check the graphic card drivers on your computer and make sure that you are using the latest version that is available. We also have the latest drivers for AVerTV USB HD DVR listed on our website. http://www.avermedia-usa.com/AVerTV/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=488&tab=APDriver

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 1080i Capture with Component cable connected to cable company HD receiver
Go to www.titantv.com to get a feel for the TV Guide Selection/interface
Low power 7 Watts on/ 5 off
Produces the very good video capture
Can be used to build a DVR/PVR system
Records manually or with scheduling
Once configured seems very reliable.

Cons: Does Not Support Win 7 MCE interface.
No choice of video capture format, which means post processing to use on other devices; which note is probably not legal with cable content so I don't recommend it anyway.
Software is tedious to install, but not extremely difficult, I did not require updated drivers as others have suggested
Does not up-convert while capturing, uses native video format only.
Back to Back show capture is difficult so I avoid it, meaning you should leave 5min between consecutive shows captured, this would improve with a faster CPU system, but the scheduler still will not handle it well.

Other Thoughts: Using with an Eee Box Atom 270, Win 7 Based system and it works.
Uses .TS format extension, consumes 5GB/Hr @ 1080i
I have not even attempted to use the supplied conversion or editing software yet so I have no opinion about it

Scheduler is simple and TitianTv is actually pretty good interface although it looks dated. Note Titian passes scheduling to TotalMedia scheduler which can't resolve stopping a recording at 9:00 then starting the next show recording at 9:00. In practice 2 min between show are required since the smallest recording increment is 1 min.
All of which can manually manipulated should you want to attempt to do so, I just avoid it.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works fine...

Pros: Captures my x-box game play just fine.
Easy to set up and start recording.

Cons: Like said before intense white will shut off your display for a sec or so.
A 12 min. video was almost 1GB and took my computer 2 hours to convert to the x-box format so I could edit it.

Other Thoughts: I bought it for game play videos so the fact I can't record 5.1 does not bother me. Also with the x-box I had component cables, but a HDMI in/out for real time would be nice.

Works great for what I use it for but if you need 5.1 go with the Hauppauge.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

If you are getting a white picture on the PC you may need to check and update the graphic card drivers for your computer. Get the latest version from the graphic card manufacturer's website. Make sure that you are using the latest drivers for AVerTV USB HD DVR.

1 out of 5 eggsGARBO!!!!

Pros: Sleek nice look

Cons: Can't adjust the bit rate. As far as I know you can't record and use HDMI. HDMI out is for playback only. This product wasn't able to handle the extreme white pictures. I used it to play cod black ops and when I was stunned and the picture went completely white the unit shuts down and I would have no picture on my screen. I have a video on this. Type in my nickname on youtube to see this product and the hauppauge hd pvr in action.

Other Thoughts: I have owned all major brands of cap cards. Blackmagic Intensity pro, Hauppauge hd pvr and the Aver media usb hd dvr. Hauppauge is by far the easiest, most user friendly, and has more settings than the Avermedia. The Blackmagic is good but you have to have a very good cpu to handle it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

You can change the bit rate in Arcsoft Total Media Extreme. Go to record/capture module, once you have your source video playing there will be a bit rate option where you can change to the desired bit rate.

HDMI output is not a passthough and will not play live video. It is only used for playback of recorded video that was recorded by the unit.

If you are referring to the picture on your PC going white you may need to check and update the graphic card drivers for your computer. Get the latest version from the graphic card manufacturer's website.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up: HDMI out Issues

Pros: This is a follow-up to the review I left a day ago. Turns out the HDMI output is only for recorded content playback, not live output for real-time viewing purposes. Really wish I would have known that before now. But, like I mentioned previously, I can get live audio output, but not video output..either way, take note if you want to use this unit for gameplay capturing. You can only use the component HD outs since the HDMI is only for recorded content being played back with this unit and included software.

Cons: See above.
