Works great with MacBook Pro
- Pros: Good value, easy to use (on Mac). Small and light, you can easily travel with this. Performance is ok but you should expect high end graphics performance from this device. It works great at max resolution 1680x1050 for office apps and web surfing. You can playback video in small to medium sized windows. Full screen is too choppy.
- Cons: You must get Mac driver from Display Link group directly: http://www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.html (the 1.5 beta driver seems to work just fine with Mac OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard.)
- Other Thoughts: If you need to drive two external monitors with resolution up to 1680x1050 then this is great choice.
Works as advertised
- Pros: - Works as advertised.
- Smaller than expected. - Automatic setup in Windows 7.
- Cons: - Doesn't fold my laundry for me.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this hoping it would work under Windows 7 RTM and it does. Installation was handled entirely by Windows and I had to do very little to get it to install. Moving windows around is slightly choppy compared to my main screen but TBH you won't notice it after 5 minutes. Surfing and scrolling on web pages is close enough to the original not to notice.
Play a game of "Where's the Windows box?"
- Pros: I do scientific programming for astronomy, so I run Linux on my main desktop. But from time to time, it's convenient to have Windows too. So I was running XP under VMware Player. But the VMware display was slowing down my machine and taking up display real estate.
I thought, hey, I've got this extra display (it's true), so I bought one of these adapters refurb, routed it to the virtual machine, installed XP drivers, switched XP to use only the USB display adapter and not the VMware-provided virtual display (also manually added a line to the VMware config file) and Voila! Virtual machine has physical display! It works marvelously.
The amazing thing is not that it works at all, but that it works *reliably*. No trouble at all. Boots up clean every time, and never loses integrity. Doesn't overheat. Big kudos to both VMware and DisplayLink.
Plus, now I have a game I can play with my colleagues. It's called, "Can you find the Windows box?"
- Cons: That cheesy USB cable it comes with. It works, but if it ever breaks, I can replace it with a standard 4-to-6 cable anyway.
I can now watch Hulu on the Windows VM while I work, although not quite 16x12. Oops. Must exercise self-control.
- Other Thoughts: Oh yeah, and I use Synergy to share keyboard and mouse with the Windows machine, instead of VMware's built-in support, which is totally confused by having this extra display that came from nowhere.
