Hauppauge turns your PC into an HDTV with their WinTV-HVR-1600. This PCI card has two tuners: NTSC, and ATSC/Clear QAM, plus an FM tuner so you can listen to the radio. The NTSC tuner is a 125 channel cable ready tuner for all of your standard over the air broadcasts or regular cable TV. The ATSC/clear QAM tuner supports all 18 ATSC formats including 1080i. You can watch the programming live or record it to disk as an MPEG-2 program stream.

There is also an S-Video input with coax audio inputs so you can attach a VCR to copy your old tapes onto DVD. An S-Video to composite adapter makes it possible to use a wider range of machines with the card.

The included Hauppauge WinTV2000 application lets you toggle between tuners so it is easy to watch what you want. Or, Windows Vista Media center will let you use the card as one of its tuners for seamless Vista integration. To make it easier to use there is an MCE remote to control both the card and your media center applications.

5 out of 5 eggsNice TV card.

Pros: I've used a couple of years now. So far it's still going strong. It's as dependable as the old PVR150 card that I'm still using in another pc.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I use this card with DIRECTV sattelite service.-standard definition. So I mostly use the mpeg2 side of it. I use these cards with linux without any problems. You can get a decent control interface (for watching or sheduled recording) for linux usage at Do a search for hvr1600.

4 out of 5 eggsMake sure you cable company sends analog signal

Pros: The card works as advertised and setup with windows media center was a breeze. This card worked flawlessly with Windows 7 Pro.

Cons: PCI interface means that you can watch or record - not both. I suggest a 2250 card instead if you have the slots on your mobo.

Other Thoughts: This card can only decode analog ClearQAM signals. I knew this going in, but didn't know if analog cable was available in my area. Turns out it wasn't, so I had to get a set-top box.
When I asked the cable guy about it, he said "In these lower-income areas we have a big problem with people stealing cable if we send analog signal. So we only send digital and require customers to use a set-top box to decode it." Hearing that was kinda a trip, lol.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent TV tuner card

Pros: Good to have a PCI interface, as some older PC's don't have PCI express. Has RCA audio inputs, and an S-Video/composite video input. Can show high definition digital programming, as well as over the air digital programming. Video quality is much better than I expected it to be. However, I wouldn't be surprised if a system with a LOT of fans in it may cause interference. FM tuner is nice to have, though I've never used it. Has a plug on the card for an extra expansion, but I'm not sure what it's for. Comes with a Media Center remote and IR units. Compatible with Windows 7 (as long as you install the software & drivers from the disc).

Cons: As others have mentioned, setting up channels for the included Hauppauge TV software is just unnecessarily difficult. Thankfully, I am currently only using it to play game consoles on my PC. Unfortunately, I am having a small issue with its responsiveness; there's about a half-second of lag between commands and what the game does. At first, it was almost 5 whole seconds, but I seem to have corrected that by turning on hardware acceleration and changing to a different video renderer. I'm sure there's something else I can do to completely eliminate the response lag, but it works for now.

Other Thoughts: Would be nice to see a slightly more detailed instruction manual. This card may prove very difficult to set up for other, less educated users. I'd still highly recommend it, though, for its high quality and great performance.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card!

Pros: This card has been great! I did a lot of research before choosing this card and I have to say that it really paid off.
I have it hooked up to cable tv and a Gamecube console and it works wonderfully. The game console is hooked into the s-video connection and using the "game mode" in their software and I have no latency problems at all. The TV pictures are very clear.

Cons: Please know that if your using the included win7 software that it does take a bit to set up. Their help is not so helpful and you may have to experiment a bit to get things right. The software (if used) will choose what number to put the channels at and you will have to manually change to what you want them to be (see other thoughts).

Other Thoughts: The channel numbers in win7 can be set to your choosing by going into settings, all channels then right clicking, then details, then type your channel number that you want that channel to be in the preset box.
For using a game console I used the s-video and you will need to add those channels in to the preset list. You will have several different s-video and composite channels and will have to test out what channel is the best. Be sure you use the game mode.

Also keep in mind that you only get what you pay for in terms of channels.

5 out of 5 eggsvery happy

Pros: The main pro for me is that it works very well with MythTV (I did my homework and found this is a well supported card). Does exactly what I wanted, it is able to capture all my cable channels. Very affordable for what it does

Cons: Nothing really comes to mind.

Other Thoughts: I had a very good experience with this card so far. It works great with MythTV. The only issues I had were related to MythTV configuration of specific features but really nothing major.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The card works with WinTV7 software

Cons: So far I can’t get Windows Media Center Live TV Mode working. After 45 seconds the Video stutters and eventually stops. After Hauppauge Tech support suggests installing all the latest Software / Driver updates from the Hauppauge site, they now believe it’s a Windows 7 Media Center issue.

Other Thoughts: I suggest buying a card like this from a local area merchant. If it has compatibility issues you can easily return or exchange it.

1 out of 5 eggsFlimsy construction - Can't recommend

Pros: Fell apart iin my hands. No real pro to that.

Cons: The digital rf connector broke as I was finalizing installation. Sorry, can't recomend the HVR1600 with this flimsy type of construction quality.
