Hauppauge turns your PC into an HDTV with their WinTV-HVR-1800. This PCIe X1 card has three tuners: FM radio, NTSC, and ATSC/clear QAM. The NTSC tuner is a 125 channel cable ready tuner for all of your standard over the air broadcasts or regular cable TV. The ATSC/clear QAM tuner supports all 18 ATSC formats including 1080i. You can watch the programming live or record it to disk as an MPEG-2 program stream.

There is also an S-Video input with coax audio inputs so you can attach a VCR to copy your old tapes onto DVD. An S-Video to composite adapter makes it possible to use a wider range of machines with the card.

Features
Watch and record ATSC high definition digital TV or analog cable TV on your PC, in a window or full screen! ATSC HD is the over-the-air high definition TV standard for North America.

Watch and record 'clear QAM' digital TV channels. Clear QAM digital TV channels are TV channels which are broadcast "in the clear" on your cable TV network.

Two tuners on board: a 125 channel cable ready TV tuner and an ATSC/QAM digital TV tuner.

New! WinTV-HVR-1850 board is now shipping!

The WinTV-HVR-1850 board adds on-board Media Center and WinTV remote control receiver/blaster. Now you can get IR receive and blast for both Media Center and the WinTV v7 application, without needing an external "beanbag". All of the other features of the WinTV-HVR-1850 remain the same as the WinTV-HVR-1800.

Technically speaking:

WinTV-HVR-1800 is a PCI Express X1 board. It contains two tuners: a digital TV tuner to receive ATSC and QAM channels plus a 125-channel cable ready TV tuner. For ATSC and QAM digital TV, all 18 ATSC formats including 1080i can be watched or recorded to disk as a MPEG-2 Program Stream. A highly integrated MPEG-1/2 hardware encoder based on the Conexant -418 is on-board for recording analog cable TV to disk. The playback of the recorded ATSC and QAM digital TV and MPEG-2 encoded analog programs are done through a software MPEG-2 player.

1 out of 5 eggsHad it up to here with this thing

Pros: Price wasn't bad (at time of purchase)

Cons: Let me preface this by saying that I've never posted a bad review of any product before, ever. That is how fed up I am with this thing.

First problem: the installer's splash screen refuses to lose focus, and covered up win7's dialog box asking me permission to allow installation the driver; I had no way of seeing or bringing that dialog box to the foreground, which forced me to cancel the process to click it because the installer hung.

Second problem: WinTV kept crashing when executed for the second time after installation (after working once), complaining of a corrupt xml file. Upon inspecting the file, I saw that it was in fact correct XML. Amazingly replacing the file with a copy of it from a fresh install still did not resolve the issue. Multiple reinstalls after using their removal tool were required to resolve this issue.

Problem 3: WinTV does not run well. It often maxes an entire core (on my i5 ivy bridge). It cashes occasionally. Otherwise I would like it. Media Center on the other hand ran quite well using very little cpu.

Problem 4: The program included to learn the IR codes for your remote is awful and looks like some college kid's Visual Basic 6 program. It failed to work on my Comcast DTA remote. This prevents me from changing channels via computer.

Problem 5: After working well enough with media center for about a year, one day the screen goes black. Reloading media center and rebooting failed to resolve the problem. It has never worked with media center since-- all I get is either static or media center just locks up.

Problem 6: Since it stopped working with media center, I made the effort to get WinTV to stop crashing. (Which took awhile; never figured out why it did to begin with. Perhaps being forced to cancel the install process had something to do with it) It did still work with WinTV, so I started using that instead. Then one day it goes black again. Restarting WinTV, it says 'no tuner available'. A reboot was required to fix it. Three or four times now the tuner has died like this-- during the same TV program for some odd reason-- requiring reboots to restore functionality. I really, really do not like being forced to reboot my machine as I have a very full taskbar at all times.

I regret this purchase.

Other Thoughts: should have just ate the $2/mo Comcast fee for a cable card

5 out of 5 eggsGreat TV tuner card

Pros: Works as promised. Easy setup and install. Would recommend to anyone looking for a TV tuner card.

Cons: The drivers for the IR remote to work with Windows Media Center are available but difficult to find since they weren't included on the install CD.

2 out of 5 eggsStay Away for a MCE PC

Pros: Decent price for what all is included. Has Analog and Digital tuners. comes with MCE Remote.

Cons: Card caused a 2005 MCE operating system PC to crash and I was scared I was going to have to wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows. Never could get the IR Reciever/Blaster ot work right even after downloading all the latest drivers from Hauppage's website.

Other Thoughts: Now NewEgg is not refunding all of my money when the IR Reciever/Blaster would not work and kept giving me a hardware not found windows issue. You google this issue and find more than one thread/complaint online about it. All I can say is "Thanks" NegEgg :(

4 out of 5 eggsworked great

Pros: works great if your motherboard can communicate with it
very decent quality of everything
been using it for many years (until upgraded the motherboard)

Cons: firmware has compatibility/communications problems with newer cheapsets and/or processors, resulting in card not being detected at all.

Other Thoughts: didn't want to work in any full length (CPU or PLX) PCIe16x slot on EVGA Z68 FTW board. worked only in the black slot routed to PCH. EVGA Tech support claimed it's the card's firmware being out dated and responsible for this behavior.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Comcast forced me to use a set top box. My old tv turner card does not understand how to communicate with a set top box. This model has an IR blaster and receiver. Installed quickly on my Dell T3400, 4 gigs memory running Windows 7 pro. I use it with Windows Media Center. It works well with Media Center and successfully communicates with the set top box so channel changes are made at the appropriate time.

Cons: I really wish the ir receiver cable were longer. The ir blaster cable is quite long. Hauppauge uses a 4 conductor cable. I have not been able to find an extender cable.

Other Thoughts: None

3 out of 5 eggsRoom for one more!

Pros: I owed the previous model of the 1850 for almost five years - wonderful.

Cons: Nov 2012 the old one died. Tried to get a new one - only the OAHD worked - not cable tuner. RMA'd easy via Newegg. New one came and it worked like a champ for a few hours - beautiful picture - responsive in WMC7. Then nothing - dead.

Other Thoughts: The guy a Haupauge thought it could be my motherboard - in his defense it could be, but I'm tired to playing with it and my brother said that network tuners are the way to go. He said there's room at the party for one more.

3 out of 5 eggssketchy

Pros: it performs the basics as promised

Cons: Poor reception quality compared to going direct to TV.

Also, unable to get the remote/ir blaster working and Hauppage customer service reply was condescending and unhelpful.

Other Thoughts: If I would likely look at other options if I were to do it over.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: ATSC works great. Troubles with ClearQAM, but i think it's my cable provider. Not bothered.

Cons: None.
