3 out of 5 eggsNot aweful

Pros: Worked well.

Cons: Faint High pitched tone/squeal during all recordings.

Recording quality at "best" recording setting is ok. Definitely not HD quality. You won't notice unless motion is fast or if there is moving text on the screen. Even smaller static has distortion.

4 out of 5 eggsHalf Truths

Pros: Haup610 Works like a dream. Detects and records from VHS player perfectly.

Cons: Bundled ArcSoft does not edit, does not save in form to record as DVD. All it wants to do is clip all recordings into one CD Video format. So that if your recording is over 700MB it will nor write to disk.

5 out of 5 eggsPicture Perfect

Pros: Easy install and easy to use. I purchase this to install in a custom computer for a house of worship. This computer has given them the ability to transfer and edit videos of their services. As a USB device it also frees up an expansion slot for other use. Very reasonable price, does the job. Some of the higher priced devices are slower and inept compared to this capture device.

Cons: Software that comes with the device is not that great. There are many Open Source Software options that can be used with this capture card. Does not take away from the card.

Other Thoughts: Pricing at $39.99 is great and it has the ease of installation and use that exceeds models that cost in excess of $154.99 or more.

1 out of 5 eggsDID NOT WORK FOR ME

Pros: none

Cons: Pinnacle Studio 15 did not recognize capture device. Nero 2014 did but here we go: on AVI capture set-up - video is skipping-freezing, on MPEG-2 - only sound (no video ), on MPEG-4 sound gets way behind the video ... connected composite to VHS for simple transfer.

Other Thoughts: Using Desktop Dell XPS8700 last edition with 3.9Ghz 4th gen.Intel i7-4770, 12G RAM, WIN8 x64

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: When it works, it works well. I liked the MPEG format (*.mpg), pretty universal. Made MPEG video of a quality commensurate with the quality of the VCR tape.

Cons: Crashes often. Spotty drivers that drop out. When it crashes, it stops Windows from shutting down. When stopping or pausing the VCR tape, it crashes the program. When recording, it takes several seconds for it to buffer itself. It took me a while to learn that it was actually recording to the HD during this time. I was worried I was losing 20seconds at the beginning of each VCR tape. Frequently, when trying to stop or start recording, I would lose the LEDs on the device for the driver being loaded or signal going into the device. Glad it was cheaper than others. I'm going to throw it in the trash now that I'm done.

Other Thoughts: This device got me through turning a tall stack of VCR cassettes into MPEG movies, but it was frustrating. If I stopped the VCR while it was being displayed in the accompanying WinTV application, the WinTV crashed. I have no idea how one would actually watch TV, as advertised, with this software. If you use this, be sure to make ample use of the onscreen 'stop button' which stops the software from crashing, most of the time, which should be clicked prior to stopping the VCR cassette or the like input source. I did not attempt to use any software other than the driver and the WinTV application.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes exactly what I bought it for

Pros: Easy to install. Easy to use. Works as expected.
I bought this to digitialize old home movies that are on VHS tapes. (I do not record live TV.) Plugged in dongle, installed drivers and software from included CD and it worked as designed. Included WinTV and ArcSoft software captures video/audio and burns DVD-R disc no problem.

Cons: Had a couple of problems with WinTV default settings. (1)When the video file got around 500 MB the video would lockup. (2)No video from S-video input. Made the following setting changes and it works great.
*Settings Icon:----------------------
Geneal-Tab:>Video Renderer:
Set Buffer size = 0
Check box - Use hardware acceleration when possible
*All Channels-Tab: ----------------
Check box - S-video
Uncheck box - Composite

Other Thoughts: System Installed on:
WIN 7 Pro 64
CPU - AMD Athlon 7750 Dual Core 2.7 GHZ
Video Card - Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition

4 out of 5 eggsGreat but some cons

Pros: Nice quality.
Easy to use.
Really portable.
Doesn't take a beast pc to run.

Cons: Software is glitchy Most of the time doesn't work.
Updating drivers is a pain since you have to find the right ones of the hauppauge website and then after downloading you need the original software CD to confirm you own that product.

Other Thoughts: Great for the money, would buy again.

4 out of 5 eggspretty good

Pros: Captured video has good color accuracy.
I use it to stream party visuals and sega genesis gameplay. Works great with the sega genesis signal. It's not fast enough to play the game directly in the capture window but its pretty good.

Cons: none really

Other Thoughts: managed to kill it after feeding it glitched video signal over and over again causing it to crash. This device does not handle bad video well so make sure you only use it with a working device.

Strobing doesn't capture well but thats to be expected as the video was strobing at 48 fps and this device doesnt capture full 48fps.

Software works but is unituitive. Be brave and play with everything you can always re-install.

5 out of 5 eggsUse two of these every week

Pros: Easy to use with USB.
S-Video option.
Works with UStream "Producer" software.

Cons: Noisy audio

Other Thoughts: I have two of these plugged in to two different camcorders that I have used for the last year to live broadcast our church services on UStream using their "producer pro" software. The cameras are 16x9 standard def, but still provide a "good enough" video. (We can't get enough outgoing bandwidth here to stream HD anyway.)

I'm pulling audio from the main sound board, but was fighting a high-pitched white noise. Even though I wasn't using the capture card's audio input, it was still active in the producer software. I found where to turn off the capture card audio in each scene and the noise problem was fixed.

I did have to install an extra PCI-USB card (inexpensive) to get enough USB bandwidth to run two cameras at once. That is nothing on the capture card, just FYI if you are looking at a similar setup with more than one camera.

The capture cards work very well, and it's nice they work with the UStream software as well.

With two of these capture cards, two older cameras (purchased used), and the UStream software, I'm able to make a fairly nice broadcast without a lot of expense.
