MediaMVP is a Linux based digital media receiver. MediaMVP includes a hardware MPEG decoder. Music and digital pictures are software decoded by MediaMVP’s processor. It receives the digital media from the PC via the Ethernet LAN, decodes the media and outputs video through composite and S-Video connections, and audio through stereo audio output connectors. MediaMVP provides an on-TV-screen display of media directory listings. It receives commands from the supplied remote control, and sends these commands to the PC server. The TV menus are created on the PC server, sent over the LAN and displayed by MediaMVPs browser.

1 out of 5 eggsover rated

Pros: well you could kind of watch movies on it

Cons: software on my media server would crash every time i pushed a button on the remote. found different software and could get it to play but the quality was a downgrade from having a full size PC hooked to my TV. If I rewind or fast forward the audio would be a head of the movie by so many sec. The player was very slow to respond to the remote and it would log all the button presses so it would be still doing commands that u had pressed several seconds before so when you wanted it to stop going down the list it would still be going.

Other Thoughts: It was cheaper than buying another computer to hook to my TV, but I all ready had a computer to hooked to my TV. So thats what i went with, and sent this thing back because it just didn't work as well as i wanted it so.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Simple interface to setup and use. Excellent if you have non - techies in the house. Only use wired connection, but why use wireless, wired is always faster and more stable. It's only $84!!!

Cons: Had to teach mom to click on the restart icon on the computer once a month.

Other Thoughts: Got this so I could setup the same equipment for my family and retired mom and dad and not have endless support and training, it worked. I think most PVR / streaming setups fail due to complexity, remember KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid.

3 out of 5 eggsAnother Hauppaupe disappointment

Pros: It runs. best I can say.

Cons: I could not get this working directly from a NIC. Used crossover cable would not work. Connected to router worked fine after a number of resets. Software interface is childish. Very slow response to remote control and very slow navigation. Very limited on types of video files it will show. Picture quality on photos is ok, but not as good as display from a CD or DVD. Don't buy this. Get a Sling Box.

Other Thoughts: The composite cable length is a little short. it just makes it from the bottom of my TV to the top. Requiring the unit to be at the very rear of the TV top. Where the weight of the cables pull it off the TV. Get a Sling Box.

3 out of 5 eggsAvoid this for DVD file playback

Pros: Unit is reasonably priced. Small footprint. Quiet. Handled photos and mp3 files well. Digital\Analog TV recording works well with GBPVR.

Cons: Doesn't handle DVD ISO format. Doesn't natively handle ac3 audio in VOB\DVD files. Does not preserve screen format on DVD's. Remote is sluggish. Rewind or skip back doesn't work. Fast Forward and Skip forward marginally works. No usable subtitle support.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to play my library of DVD's in ISO format. I installed GBPVR with XDVD. I got it to work but it had too many issues. (See cons). If you want DVD or VOB playback don't by this unit.

I ended up using XBMC on Xbox. It is just amazing!

1 out of 5 eggsWILL NOT WORK WITH CISCO 2950

Pros: works when i recieved it for xmas. but only after multiple things to my internal network were unplugged.

Cons: this unit is VERY SLOW, if you care to pause/rewind/fastforward/ or change movies mid stream you will be disappointed. Does not work with cisco 2950. DHCP should not be the only option, along with broadcast storms to comunicate with backend PC.

Other Thoughts: I have talked with tech support, and we can get this working with a normal home end user networking gear, but when you throw in a nice switch that i had installed when the house was build, it never finds the server.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent display device!

Pros: Excellent picture quality, no load on host system when playing MPEG2 video, works great with SageTV.

Cons: Stock menus kinda cheap looking -- don't nearly do justice to the excellent hardware.

Other Thoughts: Initially had a problem where it wouldn't boot when connected to my Cisco/Linksys WRTP54G router. Problem was resolved when I connected both the MediaMVP and boot server through a seperate switch (and then the switch to the router).

5 out of 5 eggsOne year later

Pros: Amazing. If you don't want to pay for a TIVO this may be the product for you. I have had the MVP for about a year now and I still use it everyday. I upgraded to GBPVR software which adds hundreds of new options and plugins--all free of charge. I record all my favorite TV shows (especially for my toddler and wife--they are big fans!) I use this in tandem with the Hauppauge USB2 PVR TV tuner.

Cons: Originally it worked ok with XP, but when I upgraded to Vista, it took me a couple weeks to get it working. Hauppauge website was not very helpful. The GBPVR forum is how I solved all my problems. I also gave up using a cross over cable entirely--and go through a router. The booklet and website say you can do it directly from PC, but I was never able to completely get it work in Vista.

Other Thoughts: Not sure what I would do without this device. I play all my music (including playlists) and I record and watch all television shows using this device. I keep a bank of children's shows on hand, record entire series of shows like "Heroes" and "The Office" all for no monthly fees like tivo. The best purchase I have ever made.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: Works great. Got the PC out of the living room. Silent, no fan. Wife is happy.

Cons: The Hauppauge software has very minimal functionality.

Other Thoughts: I do not use the included software. SageTV works much better with this device. Also, the image shows the old style remote. Mine came with the new 43 button model. Much better.

Other Thoughts: if you want to control your PC through your TV, then get this item
