2 out of 5 eggsGet what you pay for

Pros: Sturdy
Does what it says
Simple to use

Cons: Windows blue screens if the device is not ejected properly
Software constantly crashes
Refuses to record in an format besides AVI (claims the input is protected)
Low visual quality

Other Thoughts: A good item if you have plenty of hardrive space for movies and tv shows, but if you're trying to record game footage, don't bother it turns out really bad.

3 out of 5 eggsNot the best software

Pros: It does the job.

Its a great price and once you get your head around getting it to work properly, its great

Cons: Software is not great. It lacks details regarding the setup and cause me to go from Fedora 15 back to Windows 7 just to convert some VHS tapes.

There is no way to control the amount of time to record.

It may cause blue screens if you unplug the device and plug it back in too quickly... happened twice to me... but that's life when you get back into windows.

"Lord Sexy Pants"'s comment is great though, in that you need to install the utility first and the driver second... reboot... then start the player with the device plugged in and THEN start the application.

Good luck.

Other Thoughts: I wrote a VBScript to help out with the stopping of recording... it uses sendkeys to simulate "CTRL+C", but works well for me... (watch word wrapping when copying code...) Save the file as ".vbs" and just make sure the path to the program is correct.

'Start and Stop recording times for ENMVG.exe
' Sept 26, 2011

Option Explicit

Dim objShell, Program, time1

program = "C:\Program Files (x86)\ENMVG\ENMVG.exe"

Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

objShell.Run chr(34) & program & chr(34)

time1 = inputbox("Recording will begin as soon as you click OK" & vbcrlf & vbcrlf & _
"How many minutes would you like to record for? : ")

objShell.SendKeys "^c" 'start recording

WScript.Sleep 1000 * 60 * time1 'convert to sleep in minutes...

objShell.SendKeys "^c" 'stop recording

WScript.Quit 'done

4 out of 5 eggsVery Picky Hardware, but it works

Pros: -It records the video from RCA (haven't tried S-Video)
-It allows for adjustment of the contrast, saturation, brightness and hue of the video capture.

Cons: It's hell on wheels to install, but there is a way to do it, but it is VERY PICKY!

(I had 3 failed installations before I tested it on XP and found the way)

I tested it on both Win XP Pro, and Win 7 Pro (I use 7)

1. Remove the provided disc from it's sleeve and throw it away..

2. Download the latest driver kit from the company website
( )

3. Install the Utility first

4. Install the driver second

5. Restart your computer after both installations have completed.

6. Plug in the device, with the proper video component cables connected and active (have a video in or the TV on)

7. Run the utility program, which should have put a shortcut on your desktop.

8. Rejoice in the glory that is this thing finally working!

Other Thoughts: It was rough, and I nearly had to look up how to return something to Newegg, which would have been a first. I hate being cheated out of something, so I stuck to it researched a bunch, found nothing, and had to stab in the dark.

Here's my system:

Case: Coolermaster HAF922m
CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1090T 3.2ghz 9mb cache
PSU: Coolermaster GX750w
MOBO: Asus M5A88-V Evo
HDD1: 1TB Segate 7200 RPM SATA
Mediabay: Roswill 9 in 1 card reader + 1 USB port
Diskdrive: DVDRW+-DualLayer 24x CDR/W52x multi drive
GPU: ATI Radeon 6850HD 1gb GDDR5
Soundcard:Soundblaster Audigy 24bit 5.1
RAM: Coolermaster DDR3 1600mhz 8GB
Operating System: Windows 7 64bit Professional

1 out of 5 eggsno good

Pros: none

Cons: plugged it in once, to a windows 7 machine and got blue screen of death. Will not plug it in again. It's a total loss since I threw away teh box - newegg will not let me return it. This is the 2nd video grabber that didnt work. WHy is it so hard to make a video grabber that actually works???

1 out of 5 eggsTriple FAIL!

Pros: NONE! I'd give it NO EGGS if I could! Don't bother trying to call customer support, the number is no longer in service!

Cons: I purchased this item 7/6/2011, but due to a family crisis didn't bother to try to install it until tonight, 8/28/2011. I will NEVER do that again!

Other Thoughts: I installed this on my brand new Windows 7 machine. I should have known when my computer didn't register the device there was a problem. After running the software I got "the program failed to initialize" No biggie, I figured I would uninstall then reinstall. No joy, same problem. I then tried my Vista laptop with the same results. As a final resort, I tried to install it on my son's XP machine, same problem.

Now I'm cheated out of my money because I didn't install it right away, missing the 30 day replacement/return deadline with Newegg, AND I'm cheated out of transferring the only piece of footage of my deceased father from VHS to DVD! All I can do now is send Encore an email and hope they fix this.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: After some adjustment, does a good job. Had to adjust some of the output settings to get good result. Once done, it was nice.

Cant beat the price.

Cons: Windows Live Movie Maker does not see this device. Had to use the included software.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for the buck!

Pros: I've been using one of these with Win 7 Pro & Ultimate 64 for over a year now without ANY problems so I don't know why some other users have been having issues. The video quality isn't Blu-ray grade but what do you expext from ancient RCA composite and S-video input? It works with Nero 10 and I got mine on Shell Shocker for less than $20 (and made $40 the day I got it transferring an old VHS tape to DVD and burning 5 of them).

Cons: No HD input but then again for the price what can one expect?

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for and for the price it works great for what it does.

1 out of 5 eggscauses my computer to blue screen

Pros: nice size - that's about it

Cons: the few times it worked had to use the included software in order for audio to be recognized, but it would freeze or blue screen my computer shortly after (this had NEVER happened to my computer). tried third party software and audio from the device wasn't recognized, and it would also lead to freezing. i use win7 64bit on a phenom ii x4 965.

Other Thoughts: i think the biggest issue is that the latest driver for this was created in 2008. this could be the reason for the compatibility issues

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: It works for what I needed it for.

Cons: Had a slight issue with installation. The icons in the UI could be a lot cleaner, and the Image Browser thing seems pointless.

Other Thoughts: After installing the drivers, you must restart. I installed the capture program right after the utility before restarting and it gave me an error message. After uninstalling the broken capture program and reinstalling it, it worked fine. Knocked an egg off for some random unexpected troubles (somehow plugging in the device BSOD'd my computer... Probably another fluke Windows fault).

I haven't actually captured any video (I'm mainly using this to capture screenshots from games), but I'm sure it works fine.

4 out of 5 eggsUsually It Works

Pros: Usually it works, I assembled a new fast computer with Win 7, 64 bit. I have recorded about 100 hours of VHS and 8 mm casettes. I upgraded the driver to 64 bit.

Cons: The Encore has completely frozen up my computer about every other tape that I record. It seems to have complete control of my system. I have to do a hard reset followed by a manual reset to start my system again. Its the only piece of equipment that locks up my computer. This makes it very tedious to record video. Hoping I can finish before it dies and a I am over the 30 day return time limit.
