5 out of 5 eggsStarTech gets Tech Star!

Pros: Installed with no problems.
I used the NEC drivers someone was kind enough to provide a link for in a past review. Driver installed without a hitch and now I am running USB 3.0 devices and loving the speed boost.

Cons: None, got exactly what I paid for, 2 fast USB 3.0 ports.

Other Thoughts: Price was agreeable, especially after reading the reviews on the competitors.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good card with bad software

Pros: Much faster than usb 2. I have a Asrock K10N78m mother board with 4 gigs of ram running Windows 7 32 bit. Big difference when sending files to a external hard drive. A backup takes much less time. Good card for the price.

Cons: The software did not work with my system. I went to StarTech's website and downloaded the latest version and my system would not recognize the card. Finally went to the chipset maker NEC and downloaded a older version and the card now works. Just a heads up if any one else has this problem with installation.

4 out of 5 eggsOK

Pros: Does what it's supposed to do. Adds USB ports. ASUS USB3.0 speed booster doesn't see if for some reason but transfer speeds are still faster than 2.0. Easy install.

4 out of 5 eggsWhen 3.0 is Needed

Pros: Easy to install. Provides USB 3.0 ports. It came with an adapter cable to use a SATA power connection if desired.

Cons: Despite the picture showing the power port coming off the side in both the Newegg pictures and the included product manual, it was oriented to the rear. I actually had hoped for the side connection as it would be easier to connect in my case, but I was able to work around it.

Other Thoughts: The addition of USB 3.0 ports will help greatly with transferring large files. Particularly during backups. The driver installed easily from the included CD and did not cause any problems.

5 out of 5 eggsUSB3.0 Adapter

Pros: Inexpensive, card is easy to install, current driver available at the StarTech website, driver is simple to install, supports plug-and-play and hot-swap devices, very high data transfer rates. I installed one card in each of two IBM servers (206m and x3200), both running Window Server 2003. Both cards worked well in this environment.

Cons: The first time I installed the card in my server, I attached a power cable to the 4-pin molex connector on the card using my fingers. Try as I might, I failed to achieve a good electrical connection and I was unable to properly operate a portable hard drive attached to the USB3.0 port. The power supply to the drive failed intermittently and therefore, the drive periodically self-disconnected from the system. To solve the problem, I reinstalled the card after firmly (but carefully) seating the molex connector on the card using a pair of pliers. Since then, hard drives have been running continuously, powered by the USB3.0 adapter, without any self-disconnection problems. Lesson: be sure the power source and electrical connections are reliable.

Other Thoughts: These cards allow me to attach portable hard drives to my servers so that I can make complete copies of the C: drive images daily. Since I can swap hard drives daily, I can take an image copy home every day for maximum backup redundancy. Because of the very fast connection, the image copy and verify procedure can be completed in 3 hours. This has completely changed my backup strategy for the better.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat USB3 card

Pros: Installed in my Dell Optiplex W7 64-bit work computer with no problems. I did use the latest drivers off the website. USB3 flash drive was fast and close to advertised speeds even using Startech's USB3 extension cables.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I wanted USB3 speeds and this did the job.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat in Dell 11th Generation Server

Pros: I was told that this work work in a current DELL PowerEdge T410 (11th Generation) Server. I had tried several others and the just were not compatible with Dell HW / BIOS. Both Windows and machine level had major issues. These servers only come with 6 total USB 2.0 ports!

This one went in and apparently grabbed drivers from Windows Small Business Server 2011 and worked from power on. I did install their furnished utility (utility and driver disk furnished).

Providing MOLEX power was a trick in the server; I T'd off the DVD drive's SATA power connector.

If it works on SBS 11, it WILL work fine on Server 2008 R2 (as this is the basis of it).

Cons: NONE

4 out of 5 eggsWorks once you find the drivers

Pros: - The adapter arrived quickly. Thanks Newegg!
- Adapter was very easy to install
- Adapter features a 4-pin molex for power
- Package includes a converter cable from 4-pin molex to SATA style power connector
- Package includes a low profile bracket for smaller cases
- Once the drivers are installed properly, the transfer rate is very fast (approximately 10x faster than I was getting with USB 2.0)

Cons: - Included documentation is nearly worthless. Dropping 1 full egg due to this problem. The bad documentation also relates to the following issues:
-- Driver installation directions do not match the included disk. (Disk has no auto-run function, nor does it have a setup file in the main folder)
-- User needs to search among several possible folders on disk to find appropriate driver setup file. Fortunately, I've done enough of these upgrades to know what to look for, but this could be difficult for those with less experience.

Other Thoughts: My power-supply didn't have any spare SATA connectors, so I ended up connecting directly to a spare 4-pin molex from the power supply. As a result, I didn't use the convertor cable. I also used the default bracket instead of the low profile version.

Despite the poor documentation and potential driver setup issues, this seems to be a good USB 3.0 adapter. If you looking for upgrading to USB 3.0, I recommend considering this model.

4 out of 5 eggsQuick upgrade to USB 3.0 Port

Pros: Card was easy to install. Driver was easy to install from support site. Installed in Dell Vostro 420 with 3GB RAM with 250 GB hard drive. Found Seagate GoFlex 3.0 USB Drive immediately. 50 GB backup in 18 min =48MB/s versus 50GB in 54 min =16.8MB/s under USB 2.0 which is 3 times faster than USB 2.0 port. Remember PCIe in Dell is version 1.1 not 2.0 which slows transfer rate below estimates in increase expected for USB 3.0. This was everything that I expected and came with unusual surprises

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Well worth the upgrade cost for faster backups of images
