1 out of 5 eggsDOA out of Box

Pros: Like small size, hope to replace larger HP extender

Cons: DOA out of box, unit lights up when powered on but no display on tv.

Other Thoughts: Have ordered a replacement unit, I noticed other reviews from others which have also received a DOA unit and there 2nd units seemed to work ok

3 out of 5 eggsecho needs better parts

Pros: Worked right out of the box, with no problems

Cons: Could not play any HD content mp4 or mkv no video only, audio would play but non HD content played fine. After 3 weeks it just stopped working no HDMI signal at all. Pull in for an RMA.

Other Thoughts: Man its to bad they but low grade parts in it, because when it worked it was great for watching TV no lag at all on a gig network.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None.

Cons: They do not stay connected to the MCE server. Poor playback of even SD video in ANY format, has trouble sometimes playing HD TV. I own two of these, and they are a waste of money.

Ceton gives a lot of garbage about this not being typical - but it is. Just read the forums and you'll see. Don't trust Ceton or this product.

Other Thoughts: The idea of a media center extender was a good one, however, it's never been implemented properly at a reasonable price.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: None. Wish I could give it -3 stars for all the aggravation this unit has caused.

Cons: I purchased one of these through Newegg and upon updating it the unit bricked contacted Ceton did all their steps they had me send it back to Newegg for new unit. Second unit updated as it should worked for a couple weeks the unit got unplugged accidentally while a show was on unit is now bricked. These things are junk Ceton will try to help you recover the unit but I have tried this process twice now and neither time it worked. I have contacted them about an RMA for this unit because it is still practically brand new and I have not gotten a reply it has been two days. Any other questions and you get a prompt reply but when you ask them to stand behind their product nothing. Learn from my mistakes looks good on paper but it is junk.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent for most live TV on smaller screens

Pros: Very small and low power usage. Does fairly well on the standard HD channels with latest firmware, allows playback of recorded TV, navigation speed and boot time are acceptable.

Cons: Minor framerate/screen tearing issues on premium channels. Cannot keep up with HD media encoded in H.264 (but Xbox 360 handles fine). Mediocre de-interlacing and image quality can be distracting on larger TVs. On some occasions the audio/video would get out of sync on HD channels requiring a reboot of the device (happened to me twice in the same day, not again since then).

Other Thoughts: For a smaller TV (below 40") that is only going to be used for basic TV watching (say, watching news, sports, or HGTV in the kitchen), this is a decent product. Not a good solution for a home theater or larger screen, or where you plan to use an extender to watch your movie library.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks... Not Ideal but.. for Media Center not too bad

Pros: Handles not only TV but most video formats -- including MKV. I don't know what the other reviewer spec'd out; all you need do is download the Win 7 or 8 Video drivers to get all of these formats available on a pass-thru basis. That said, some formats in 1080p won't be viewable. So downsize.

Cons: I bought this for $179. It would be a good value for about $59 IMO (honest or not) but $179 was way over-priced and rather quickly reduced it $100 or so. Story of my life with PCs...

The remote was difficult to work with right from the get-go, until I replaced the batteries. Go figure. Wish they would update the software for the hardware, too.

Sometimes (well about 50% of the time) you need to restart the system to get the signal and video to handshake properly, which is a bit of a pain, but it does work the second time around. All said, it might be less frustrating to just use a cable box.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat MC Extender

Pros: Super quite (no fan)
Does exactly what it's supposed to do, serve up Windows Media Center
Always on (no startup time)
Great value
Video Quality
Small

Cons: A little bit slower on navigation than xBox 360

Other Thoughts: I have 3 xBox 360s (2 Slims and a previous model) and been using them as Windows Media Center Extenders for 5 years now. But I was tired of the noise of the fans (unit and/or the power supply) and the boot up time as well as the switching apps time.
This does all my extender functions as well as the xBox excepts it's just a tad slower on navigation which is no problem for me.
This allows me to have xBox video apps running (like ESPN, xBox Video, VUDU, Huku, etc.) and switch back and forth to media center via my AVR (like during commercials).
This also frees me up to be able to move to xBox One without losing my Extender which we can't live without. Our use of the xBox's is 60% WMC and 40% everything else.

2 out of 5 eggsGood only for TV

Pros: Works OK for TV only as a Media Center Extender
Small/Compact
Low Power Usage

Cons: Painfully slow, like using an old original Atom based computer.
Looooooooong boot up time till live TV is available.......about 40-45 seconds from cold boot.

Very limited media type playback. No mkv, etc.

H264 playback is very choppy. This thing just doesn't have the horsepower.

No Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Sometimes acts very flaky, i.e. random freezes, random recovery mode. Frustrating.

I would have serious concerns about buying another one. In the future, I'd rather just build a cheap Baytrail NUC and at least have a Windows Media Center device that can actually do everything.

Included remote is useless.
Get a Logitech harmony series.

Other Thoughts: Waaaaaay too much money for something that only kind-of works.
This item should be $50 max for the performance you get out of it.

Will not work with Windows 8 Media Center.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat potential, so little delivered.

Pros: As a TV extender it works well. easy to install. Small. reasonably fast.

Cons: Whether it is Ceton's poor support on their website or the lack of media playback this box is not good. Firmware is buggy and they no longer support it. They initially sold it as something that would run androd as well. That was a lie and false asvertising imo. They dropped that a bit ago. Other than WMC extension this box offers nothing and i mean NOTHING. Spotty video playback of videos that work on the host PC.

Other Thoughts: There is no reason to buy this unless you want the TV function. Add Plex to any other streaming device and add recorded TV to Plex and you don't need this. So much potential and so little delivered. I am completely disappointed. 2 stars only due to live tv working most of the time. I paid twice the amount they are asking now and I would not pay more than half what they are asking today again for this.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Little Box

Pros: I read through all of the issues and became worried, but I wanted a better solution then an Xbox in my kitchen because I have 2 months left before my XBG family expires and I end my relationship w/ MSFT. In any case, it took me five minutes to set up the box (update firmware out of the box), and it seemed like I didnt need to add in the Ceton helper app, because it simply works as an extender out of the box. I followed the directions (turn off echo, turn off WMC, install) and it worked. I rebooted the Echo, and the settings came up, I modified a few and on my way. I also turned off transition animations as that caused issues on the Xbox also.

I have kept the Echo on 100% of the time without issue yet, but I also keep my WMC VM up 100% of the time also. The performance is on par or faster than my Xbox.

I have purposely divorced my "media" from my Xbox/Echo and have moved to a Roku solution and PLex for that matter. I put a new Roku streaming stick @ 5GHz and all my media needs are satisfied. Added a Logitech 650 remote ($40 refurb) and it takes care of all my needs.

The Roku and Ceton take about 5W, so I'm not too worried about keeping them going. They are superior solutions.

I have not tried any media viewing outside of WMC (mediaportal, etc) because they never worked correctly and Plex is now my universal solution so the Echo is now my guy.

If they could combine the Echo w/ a Roku now they would have a real winner. In the meantime I can live w/ both and a Refurbed Logitech to switch...

Cons: The remote. I didnt even try to use it, but it definitely goes down as being one of the worst-designed remotes I have ever seen. They should just ship without it and save me $20.

Also a nit but they put a film over the shiny parts and to take it off I nicked it.

Also on/off is slow, so I think that keeping this on all the time is better. A lag of a minute or so, maybe another 20 seconds over an Xbox.

No firmware update in over a year, so that always worries me because people are complaining and not getting fixed. Ceton also hasn't updated their app in a while, so maybe the company is in trouble... However no issues to report from my side yet, and I'm using Windows 7, not trying to hack Win8.

Other Thoughts: Like my SageTV once they got is solid, they sold it. Hopefully they follow through w/ endpoint solutions and not leave them in the lurk, but I know MSFT isn't really developing WMC anymore so this product has a shelf life.

Also the plans to use Linux I hear fumbled due to the wrong choice in Silicon, so Im assuming development for this product rev is dead.
