Pros: Does do RAID. You can probably write a script to interrogate the RAID to check the status. Adaptec support was easy to get hold of.
Cons: No audible alarm if RAID fails! For $300+ I expected a complete solution. Get an LSI instead.
Other Thoughts: At first I could not believe it had no method of displaying RAID failure and contacted Adaptec. They said I had to buy the 8 port version to get one that had an audible alarm.

Pros: The Adaptec 2420 SA Raid controller is really easy to install, it works flawlessly. RAID 5 creation with big disks is time consuming, but runs unattended and once it's done you are good to go! i have built 5 servers with this RAID card, and all seem to be solid performers, for which I'm grateful. I will continue to build my servers on this platform, it seems to be a good compromise of performance and cost.
Cons: PCI X-64 MB interface is more costly / rare in motherboards, but many server MB have it. Battery backup for the RAID controller card is available from Adaptec, but is about $105.

Pros: I build servers for a living. Bought out newegg's stock of these cards. The new Raid 6 feature (hot swap spare + raid 5) is something really exciting have. This is the absolute best deal for SATA Raid. You can find cheaper, but it won't work nearly as well.
Cons: It is PCI-X. You will need the larger 64 bit slot. Most motherboard do not come with one.
Other Thoughts: So many things can go wrong with raid controllers that are on the motherboard. Having a stand alone card to process the raid is the best way to go. Adaptec has been in the raid game longer than anyone.
