Adaptec Series 6E Unified Serial SATA/SAS RAID controllers deliver the robustness of hardware RAID and the Adaptec RAID Code, enterprise class management features, and full OS support -- including open source drivers for Linux and FreeBSD -- into the entry level RAID space. Delivering the same 6Gb/s performance of the Series 6 controllers, the Series 6E are optimized for the platform where a Series 6 controller would not fit in from a price, form factor or host connectivity standpoint.

Series 6E controllers support SATA and SAS devices, and have been qualified with the same systems, motherboards, backplanes and drives as Series 6 controller. They include the same drivers, BIOS and storage management tools as Series 6 controllers and do not require additional training or qualification. Series 6E controllers are thoroughly tested with entry-level storage devices for desktop use and entry-level server platform, workstation and motherboards most typically used for basic server, performance workstation and industrial PCs.

  • newegg I/O Connectivity and Data Protection With its entry-level price point, Adaptec 6405E can be used as a connectivity product, with support for up to 4 SATA and SAS devices, and 128MB of DDR2-800 MHz DRAM cache for device acceleration. At the same time, the Adaptec RAID Code (ARC) delivers maximum reliability with RAID levels 0, 1, 1E, 10 and JBOD. ARC also offers RAID Level Migration (the ability to easily migrate RAID levels), Online Capacity Expansion (expand capacity without powering down the server), and Copyback Hot Spare (when a failed drive has been replaced, data is automatically copied from the hot spare back to the restored drive).
  • newegg Hybrid RAID With Hybrid RAID 1 and 10 the Series 6E controllers offer maximum performance and reliability by combining Solid State Drives (SSDs) and Hard Disk Drives in a single array. By performing read operations from the fastest SSD and write operations on both the SSDs and HDDs it offers tremendous performance gains over standard HDD RAID arrays. By combining SSDs and HDDs it offers the benefits of both technologies and allows a better cost per GB ratio than comparable SSD only arrays.
  • newegg The Case for Cache The fastest way for a RAID controller to fulfill a read or write request is to serve data out of its cache. Savvy network administrator knows that enabling the RAID controller cache offers significant performance benefits, such as reduced latency in I/O request, bandwidth and queue depths that surpass software application limits, and on-the-fly parity calculations on sequential writes.
  • newegg Intelligent Power Management Intelligent Power Management (IPM) slashed power and cooling costs by up to 70% using intelligent I/O caching combined with disk drive power savings via standby and power-off modes.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Hardware RAID
Supports SSD drives

Cons: A fan is needed for this card as heat is a noted issue. Adaptec sells a fan kit for it. Part number is 2275100-R. However, it is hard to find online. Any 40mm fan will work. I am using a Noctua fan. Newegg part number is N82E16835608033. Noctua fans are quiet and very reliable.

I took one star off for using the word "single" instead of "bare bones" or "without cable, software, and installation guide" or "card only".

I took another star off for not including a fan when Adaptec admits that cooling is a problem and the heat sink used on the card is designed to hold a fan.

Other Thoughts: A cable is required for this card. Adaptec makes three different cables for this card. Two are for SAS and one is for SATA. Newegg sells two of them: 2275300-R for SAS and 2272300-R for SATA. The third is 2275200-R.

The word "single" at the end of the product title means that it includes only the card and a low profile bracket. It does not include:

-Quick Installation Guide(English/French/German/Italian/Spanish/Japanese)
-Software and documentation DVDs
-Cable: one mSASx4-4SATA x1-SB, 0.7m

Newegg sells the same card with these items with the word "kit" at the end of the product title. It comes with the above items. Part number is N82E16816103229.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks With ESXi

Pros: Easy to setup, works well with ESXi once the bundle and VIB have been imported.

Cons: Runs very hot. Since I installed it, the system has been resetting itself right before the fans freak out. The carb itself is very hot to the touch, so you need a dedicated fan just for it to run properly.

4 out of 5 eggsFirmware Build 19147 Does NOT work with Asus Motherboards

Pros: Fast Transfer Speeds

Cons: Slow to boot

Other Thoughts: Attempted to update the firmware from 5.2.0 Build 19109 to Build 19147. Will NOT boot after update in an Asus Motherboard! Tried multiple slots and Asus motherboards, but still will not boot! Had to revert back to 19109 but using a Zotac motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Low-end Card.

Pros: This card would boot Windows 7 on a Gigabyte Z77 board where the High Point 2640x1 would not. Please see my comments below.

Cons: It does indeed take a long time to boot. This will be a drag to those who turn their machines off everyday.

They run hot and I mean hot.

Other Thoughts: I was using the Highpoint card on Gigabyte's Z68 motherboards and it worked very well but would not with the newer Z77 boards. You have to press any key to boot to the drive with the Highpoint. So, I tried this Adaptec card, paying the higher price, and it works perfectly. The Z77 board boots up fine and the Z77 Extreme 4 board from ASRock works the same. The Highpoint card did boot okay with the ASRock board, so something is incompatible between Highpoint and Gigabyte.

The transfer speed difference however, between the Highpoint and this card is amazing. Seagate Barracudas on the Highpoint were around the low hundreds in reads and this card is sometimes a little over two hundred. I installed Hitachi SAS 15k drives in RAID 1 with this card and could achieve 300 reads. I tried Seagate Cheetah 15k drives with this card and they did not write very well. The reads were okay but the writes were terrible and I saw on the Web some people with the same problem, and their advice was to try the Hitachi's with Adaptec cards and they were correct.

So, I have purchased ten of these cards and have created Barracuda RAID 1's and Hitachi RAID 1's and they work very nicely. I am dissapointed that I cannot use the Cheetah's with this card but the Hitachi's warranty is the same.

The heat problem is a worry to me, but I have four fans in these workstations so I think I will be alright for now.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat entry raid card

Pros: Great hardware raid card with VMware support. I had to look for a while to find this card and it has async VMware support for VMware 4 to the newest 5.5. you can slipstream the driver in or just boot of a USB stick.

Cons: it only has raid 0,1,10 support.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Bargain

Pros: Needed this RAID card to support an ESXi install. Have 4 Hotswap drives in a 1U server and as everyone knows, software/integrated RAID is a "no-no" for ESXi. This card did the trick after adding the drivers to a custom ESXi ISO. Currently running RAID I on two SSDs to mirror the OS and RAID I on two HDDs to mirror the Datastores. Excellent card!

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsAdaptec RAID 6405E

Pros: Reliable, hardware works out of the box, supports multiple RAIDs on same card. Awesome technical support.

Cons: 1st one was defective.
Needs extra cooling.
Cannot enter Card config during POST.
Adaptec Storage Manager didn't work right away, software a little clunky.

Other Thoughts: There are warning that this card needs a lot of airflow, I was getting constant alerts about it overheat so I had to rearrange everything inside my case. However it looks like 1st card had defective temp. sensor so it would get stuck at reporting 65C even if I just turned on the computer. Fortunately Adaptect support was a hero, they answer quickly and immediate offered RMA. They even sent me new card without requiring credit card or payment hold before I returned old one. Second card works great so far, but I also suspect that latest firmware might have been an issue (rather than temp sensor) so I didn't upgrade to latest.
Adaptec Storage Manger didn't work when installed from provided CD, but after I downloaded latest one from website (not super easy to find) it works fine (Windows 8 x64). It's looks a bit outdated, not very intuitive but functional.
One minor issue is that I can't enter card's BIOS during system boot. Has something to do with my motherboard (ASUS) or EFI BIOS. Overall I'm very happy about this card, it's lot better than LSI MegaRAID.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good affordable raid

Pros: Fast, dependable, reliable, low cost

Cons: No way to use with a battery of flash backup adapter.
Only way to turn on write caching without risk, is to use a UPS.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this to upgrade from a software raid 10 to a hardware raid 1. Pretty much tripled the overall speed of my computer, even with write caching turned off. Very affordable. This card doesn't have an interface/plug-in to use with a battery or flash module, so don't make the mistake of purchasing one to use with this card like I did. If you want to use a flash module, you'll need to buy a more costlier model. You can, however use a UPS, which would allow you to turn write caching on.

Very easy to setup. I'd recommend this card for someone just getting into raid, or for anyone who wants a fast dependable raid on a budget.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid at all costs

Pros: That I can return it.

Cons: Does not boot.

Other Thoughts: I spent a long time trying to work out the kinks and contacted the support line on this issue too as well as several emails. Just plain will not work with new motherboards.

3 out of 5 eggsAdaptec Raid 6405SE

Pros: Installed easily with two solid state drives 6's mirrored without any difficulty

Cons: #1) If you use their software to format any disk either the solid state drives or any other drive Windows 2008 server will not recognize the NTFS formating and will not installl on it . This may be a problem with Window 2008
however I think Adaptec ought to provide a work around in their software to make this simple .

Windows 2000 server use to have a utility that woudl format most anything prior to loading the operating system. The utiliity in 2008 is far more restricted in its ability
#2) They make a big thing about air flow and temperature of the card but provide no diagnostic utilities on the card to tell you what the temperature is .
#3) The cards bios does not interface with the on board adaptec server board bios so you have to endure to adaptec boot sequences that coudl have been accomplished with one . Thne only reason to endure this is to get the 6 meg transfer rate from the disks that this card allows.

Other Thoughts: At this point I am happy with the product but disappointed that I could not work around the issue with Windows server despite tyring numerous work arounds and drivers
