5 out of 5 eggsExcellent software RAID card

Pros: No installation required with ubuntu server

Supports 2tb and 3tb drives

PCI-X 64bit interface

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: This was a very inexpensive way to allow my old TYAN motherboard to support drives larger then 1tb. I cannot comment on how good the RAID cards software is because I have not used it. I put a lot more faith in a linux software raid then cheap raid card software.

4 out of 5 eggsGood cheap card

Pros: great way to add SATA ports to an older server. it's reliable (so far) and cheap

Cons: doesn't pass S.M.A.R.T. info - might not be a Con with the right driver (several to choose from) but I didn't look very hard for another one

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost good

Pros: Plugged in to old gateway server, worked right away ..... however, see cons

Cons: I ordered two. One worked well, the second would not be recognized by the mainboard even when set up in the same slot as the working card. So, RMA'd failed card back t Newegg.

Other Thoughts: Newegg, as usually, was hassle free. Just a bad card. 50-50 craps shoot?

5 out of 5 eggsWorking in a Dell Server w/Win 2003

Pros: I got this card to go in a 2002 vintage Dell Poweredge 1400SC tower server to run a pair of 2TB disks. I put in the card and Win Update found a driver to install. The disks worked as two separate disks, so I went to Disk Management and formatted 'em with separate drive letters. About as smooth a setup as you can have, no need to flash the card to get it out of RAID mode or anything.

Cons: Not a one I can see. It does say Silicon Image 3124 RAID or something like that in Device Manager, but it works how I want, i.e. two disks with different letters show up as drives on the system.

Other Thoughts: I have another SiI 3124 based card in another system, it's a Norco 4618 four port eSATA. It lives in an Apple Xserve and connects to a four disk rack mount enclosure and works well. That card has vanished from newegg and other vendors, and now you pay a pretty penny for a four port PCI-X eSATA card. But I digress. SiI makes a good controller so find the cheapest card with it and you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING CARD

Pros: Cheap card, only one I could find especially for the price that accepts 2tb drives. I currently have 4 2tb drives in a linux raid5 attached to this card. I needed a raid controller that would allow an old server motherboard to accept 2tb hard drives and this card is perfect for that.

Cons: Not a hardware raid, but what do you expect for the price.

Other Thoughts: This card is perfect for modernizing an old server.
No drivers needed for Ubuntu Server 10.10
I attempted to order this card from newegg, but when I went to checkout it said the card was no longer in stock. I went back to the description page and it said the card was discontinued. So I had to order the card from opentip.com instead. It appears now that the card is back in stock at newegg. Too bad they didn't have it a week ago.

1 out of 5 eggsOrphans

Pros: Cheap PCI-X solution.

Cons: Keeps orphaning drives. I have 4x Intel 40g SSDs and in any configuration(Raid 0,10,5) it likes to orphan drives as soon as any load is put on the array such as benchmarking(Crystalmark,ATTO,etc.) or large file transfers. Before crashing, the sequential read speed of 2,3 or 4 drives is about half(90m/sec vs 200m/sec) of a single drive.

I have tried all the drivers and software for the Silicon Image SII3124 from the past up until the current set.

Other Thoughts: I am running it on a rather antiquated HP G3 server, but our other raid arrays seem fine even when under similar load.

it is running on its own PCI-X channel and seems to be able to handle one SSD fine.

Oddly, while the benchmark runs, the random read(512k) is amazing(250m/sec+) but, as said before, the sequential drops to <100m/sec.

3 out of 5 eggsNot that great

Pros: Adds SATA ports, which is exactly what I got it for. Never tried the RAID on it. I was running video and music off the drives hooked to it and they all ran just as smooth as they would as if they were hooked to my board.

Cons: After less than 6 months, one of the connectors broke off. Another port stopped reading.

5 out of 5 eggsgood buy

Pros: Works perfectly. Arch Linux running on an old Dell PowerEdge 2400. Performance is quite reasonable, and very good for the price.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Haven't tried RAID. It's not a hardware RAID card though, so there'd really be no point. Better to just use it as a SATA controller and let Linux take care of the RAID.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes not Support 3.3v

Pros: Would work if my board supported 5v PIC-X

Cons: Will work in a 32-bit 5v PCI slot but will only achieve 133MB/s transfer speeds.

Other Thoughts: I needed a SATAII controller card to revive my old Precision 450 workstation.

I purchased this card because it was suppose to work with 3.3v PCI-X interface, according to the manufactures website. Sadly the card was identical to the card I purchased a month ago, and also retuned. This card was identical to the SYBA SY-PCX40009, because the chipset in both cards is the SiL3124 chipset which does not support 3.3v PCI slots. Even though the card is keyed for a universal application it, however, does not support 3.3v.
