5 Rocketraid Cards on 1 Motherboard

white Reviewed By: Raid 5 Fanatic on 3/17/2007
Rating + 5
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This is an update to an earlier review. I was having problems with drives dropping and could only get 2 cards to run together.
I upgraded to a 1000w PS, older Asus A8V Deluxe socket 939 Mobo and an AMD dual core Opteron 175 CPU. I disabled the 2 onboard sata chips and was able to get (3) RR 1740s running almost immediately.
The 4th 1740 would cause NTLDR errors on boot, so I installed 2 Rocketraid 1640 cards in the last 2 PCI slots. BTW, I also got the NTLDR errors with Promise SATA I TX4 card, so the limitation seems to be on the Motherboard side.
As soon as I get another 4 Maxtor Maxline III 500GBs I will have 20 HDs in all runing Raid 5 :) Check them out, Newegg has some great pricing on Maxline IIIs right now.
Cons: It took several days of swapping in and out to figure out what would and would not work. I had to abandon Win XP 64 and go back to XP PRO SP2. The A8V Deluxe onboard raids are only Stripe or Mirror and I wanted Raid 5 arrays.
Once again I sent a really nice and friendly email asking if Highpoint had any suggestions on how to get a 4th card to run or how to install additional Highpoint cards and got ZILCH in reponse.
I figured out that with 2 different types of RR cards, it is better to use the web admin utility than the GUI. I installed the 1740s first and they were assigned port 7405 on the localhost. The 1640s automatically incremented up 2 port numbers to 7407. So I just needed to create 2 seperate favorites in my internet browser to access the raid admin functions.
The 1640s both boot up seperately in BIOS and the 3 1740s are available in one BIOS screen.
Other Thoughts: If you don't have much CPU or power then these cards will start dropping HDs. Cheap raid calls for more robust equipment.
If anyone knows of a forum we could move these discussions to .. please post it back here, so we can help each other since highpoint's support is sporadic, at best.
Happy Raiding !! NEWEGG ROCKS (of course) !!

Multi-Card RAID 5 Installation

white Reviewed By: RAID5 Fanatic on 1/25/2007
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Fairly solid performance if you take the proper steps to avoid allowing the card to drop drives.
I have 3 cards running simultaneously with 3 Raid 5 arrays with 4 HDs each.
I am running WinXP SP2, Asus A7n8X deluxe mobo, 1.5GB PC3200 Ram using an AMD AThlon XP 2700+.
4x300gb Seagate ST400620AS. 4x500gb Maxtor Maxline Pro 7H500F0. 4x300gb Maxtor 7L300SO.
Running 600W Maddog PS.
805 of parts courtesy of Newegg.com.
Cons: Things to consider when running multiple RR1740 cards in a server.
- Set array to write through.
- Unplug arrays before running full scans with Norton AV and throttle CPU use for backup proceses. Norton causes the CPU to max out and RR will start dropping HDs.
- Don't use Maxtor Pro 500 7H500F0 500GB drives in the ICY DOCK MB454SPF-B or other sata enclosures with this card. (The Icy Dock unit dropped 300gb HDs also) Drives drop as fast as they replug. Works fine with HDs mounted in open rack in server case. Overheating is not the issue as I have checked the temps via S.M.A.R.T.
- Don't attemp to mix different RR cards in the same server. Raid mgmt app is diff. for diff cards.
- If more than one raid requires rebuilding . unplug arrays and Hds and rebuild seperately.
- Depending on the robustness of your CPU, you may need to set the rebuild to one of the lower priority settings.
Other Thoughts: We need to setup a user forurm somewhere to trade information on how to overcome issues with the Rocketraid cards. If the Highpoint User Suppport can't immediately identify the problem, they will usually ignore your emails.
I probably will upgrade the mobo and CPU to AMD Athlon XP dual core and ASUS A8V deluxe mobo and see if that relieves some of the CPU performance issues. If that works out I will try to add a 4th RR1740 as I have 21 bays in my server case :)
If I were starting over from scratch and had at least two open PCI-x slots I would try the RR 2322. The price point per HD is about the same.

No Windows 7 Support

white Reviewed By: Ash on 10/16/2009
Rating + 1
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It was somewhat cheap. Creating a RAID was fairly simple and straight forward. No conflicts with the DELL PowerEdge T100 server. Tech support was fairly nice and quick to respond.
Cons: Tried to install Windows 7 on a RAID 1 Array. Windows 7 RC1 doesn't have any native driver support for this particular card and when I contacted Highpoint tech support, this was their responce: "Our Windows 7 driver support is available under our entry level SAS/SATA RocketRAID2600 series and enterprise RocketRAID3500 & 4300 series. So far, we don’t have plan on releasing new drivers...."
Other Thoughts: I have no idea how the card works on XP or Vista. I am sure it works fine. But seeing how they have no plans to support Windows 7, I would recommend to everyone that they look else where for their RAID solutions.

Don't Try for Tech Support

white Reviewed By: Randy on 8/5/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Fast Easy Setup
Cons: They get a one because I cannot assign a negative number. Even with FAST EASY SETUP, there has been no way to recover. When a drive failed, I replaced it with an identical drive, but the system disabled the raid so would not fix it. FOUR LONG days with Highpoints inept tech support finally got me a utility that would enable the array and allow the fix. It enabled the array, but it also corrupted ALL the data on the array. Worse yet, even after it was enabled, it will not rebuild. I have tried 2 of the cards and have the same issue on both. I would not trust my solitaire game to another Highpoint array!!!
Other Thoughts: For those who say I should have called High Point instead of using their email support...I tried. I kept getting a very nice lady who told me that the "support staff" was busy and would call me back within 24 hours. That NEVER happened and I called several times.

Solid card, nice web-app

white Reviewed By: snapfla on 7/22/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I love the web-based application that allows you to manage the card, which has been extremely useful for me. I was able to RMA a couple drives that I was having problems with, and had too many bad sectors, as shown by this utility. You can see the drive temps, model/serial numbers, array stats, etc. Nice...
Cons: The user name for access to the web mgmt app is locked at "RAID", which is case-sensitive. I would like to be able to change the user name.
Other Thoughts: I've owned this card for a little over 3 months, and I am very satisfied with it. It's a good product when your only complaint is as trivial as the one above! You can't go wrong with this.
P.S. One of my friends has had this card for at least a year, and he's happy with it too, which partly drove my decision for this purchase.
