1 out of 5 eggsLINUX USER BE WARED

Pros: Newegg 's good customer services for return

Cons: This card can't work well in linux , I am using centos 6.5/ ubuntu 12.04 LTS . this card would randomly kick out harddrives. since I bought 2 of these cards , and they work the same , so I am pretty sure it's the designing problem of this product.

5 out of 5 eggsFixed My Problem

Pros: Plug and Play with Linux CentOS 6.5. Eliminated my HD hangs with other controllers (2 different vendors) running with the Marvell 88SE9230 chip. Faster also.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I was having a significant problem with WD 1TB hard drives running at 6gb with other controllers (2 different vendors) running with the Marvell 88SE9230 chip. Drives would hang. Jumper the WD HDs down to 3gb and drives ran fine. Problem is document on other web sites as an incompatibility with the WD firmware. This board does use a Marvell chip, not sure which one, but does not exhibit the HD hang problem with drives running at 6gb. The 4x PCIe interface also seems to add significant speed improvements over the other controllers with the 88SE9230 even when running the other controllers at 6gb with Seagate Constellation HDs.

5 out of 5 eggsabout the 640L raid controller card

Pros: Pretty good card

Cons: some people don't understand how this card works

Other Thoughts: OK. for people using this card there are some fact that will make a HUGE difference. One is there there are two controller chips attached across 4 SATA Ports. IF you make the mistake of running 2 disks on a single controller chip at the same time, your speed will suffer. If you run one HD on each chip, you will get much better speed. I don't remember which ports are which, but if your speed with 2 drives suck, then move one of them to another port and test again. You will see a vast increase in speed. But.. don't try and use 3 of 4 drives in a raid array. The raid will bog down as you will have 2 drives on a single chip.
Finally, the port multiplier will make this worse. You can actually run 20 drives on this (4 SATA ports X 5 port multiplied ports = 20 hard drives per card). I am setting this up now, though only with 8 drives on 2 ports.
The saving grace is since the drives are huge, only one drive at a time is in use and the speed is full speed on any drive. Don't expect super speeds from a software raid card like this unless you have monsterous fast hardware on your MB to make up for it.
BTW, I do NOT recommend raid of any kind. I recommend lots of huge drives (I use 4TB each) then a backup application like sync toys to sync to a different computer. I have a always on server with 8 drives and my desktop with 8 drives. Then I sync one computer to the other and turn off the desktop. when I am done. No backup, (2 copies) no raid (no rebuilding) low power (only 1 drive running at a time), then it goes to sleep when no in use.

1 out of 5 eggsNo a very good card

Pros: Cost for 4 6gb ports. But doesn't work so not really a pro.

Cons: Having a weird issue. I have four SSD drives all with the same firmware. Well all the sudden after a week the card fails to see the last drive. Plugged them into MOBO and they are all fine. PC will stay up as long as I get it running by power cycling over and over. Card seems very, very cheap. Possible DOA not really sure as I don't have any time to troubleshoot it...

5 out of 5 eggsModern hotswap basic RAID on the cheap!

Pros: Got this for my home nas running Server 2012 R2, just to have more sata ports... turned out to be a much better card than expected!

It has hot swap plugs. Meaning I can add/remove drives without shutting down!

It has a web interface for the RAID controller, so I can see everything from my computer, or even from work!

It has email notifications, for when a drive dies, I hear about it!!!

It came with 4, blue, 6Gb sata cables without the 90 angle on the ends, which is just the best thing ever.

4 sata ports on the card. Anyone saying otherwise is incorrect.

It supports RAID0, RAID1, RAID10, HyperDuo (Capacity), HyperDuo (Safe)

Cons: None, I know what I'm doing.
Be sure to reboot after installing the drivers.
Quick BIOS screen, so just spam CTRL-M

Other Thoughts: @ Hayden P, your dual Samsung 840 Pros are hitting the literal maximum throughput of the PCIe 2.0 x1 lane (5Gb). Still INCREDIBLY FAST BTW. That's why your onboard raid was faster.
Go ahead, divide 5,000,000,000 by 8. The 840 Pro is basing it's maximum speed on 6Gb sata ports.

LOL at the Linux users who can't get it working. What's that? Is Linux making you look like an idiot because you can't get it working? You miss plug and play? How's that neckbeard superiority now, dumbtards! Shame on you for blaming the raidcard and not taking responsibility! "The box says linux support, and it doesn't work on my obscure distro my uncle compiled just for me!" - Thats what you sound like.

Also, a huge word of caution to those putting SSDs into a RAID on here. I doubt the TRIM commands are being passed through to the SSDs, so expect a shorter performance lifespan of the SSD. Almost all RAIDs containing SSDs suffer from that issue, and it's simply because the TRIM commands come from the OS, and the raid controller hides the real drives from the OS, making many look like 1, etc... I have a few SSDs on hand, maybe I'll plug them in and let you know.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for my needs

Pros: It worked right out of the box. I bought it to use with Windows Home Server 2011 (Windows Server 2008 engine); I have it configured as RAID 1 with 2x2 2TB Western Digital drives, with the drives spanned in Windows. Throughput was NOT my goal- I just needed more SATA ports and redundancy. My Asus motherboard is quite a few years old, but no problems at all.

Cons: The card BIOS flashes by so quickly that you can't see that you have to press Cntrl-M to configure the array, but it was easy enough to find in the documentation.
- The configuration isn't necessarily intuitive, but is so simple that you can figure it out quickly anyway.
- I couldn't get the web interface to work, but I didn't need it.
- Manually installing the drivers from the x64 driver folder didn't work, but when I let Windows search the entire CD, it found the correct drivers.

Other Thoughts: Since I under-utilize my home server's CPU, I didn't need a high-end card. Given my bad experience with many cheap add-on SATA and RAID cards (Promise, Adaptec,) though, I was pleasantly surprised that it worked with minimum hassles.

I have not tested how things go when I remove one of the redundant drives...which, of course, is the real test of a product.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic card

Pros: Got this to setup a pair of drives mirrored for ESXi install. ESXi had a driver for it already. Easy steps to upgrade the driver to newest version. ESXi using it perfectly.

Cons: Really have to have the included cable to connect to drives. I do not know why any one would purchase the card with out the cable harness. Not a standard cable.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Hardware

Pros: Price

Cons: Invalid DMA addressing in the Marvell chip this is based on causes IOMMU units to correctly fail the tansfer requests. This prevents the card from working with boards containing IOMMU hardware (ex. 990FX boards). Lower-end motherboards may be fine, but this is very incompatible with any hardware used for running modern virtualization, etc. There is some work Linux being done to attempt a software workaround via patches to bleeding edge kernels, but I doubt there will be even a final patch merged before year end. If lucky, support will be available in the Summer 2014 distros.

Other Thoughts: Should not have advertised Linux support.

1 out of 5 eggsBlows

Pros: None

Cons: Yes you can hook an ssd to it but you won't be able to get even half the advertised speed of your ssd I.E. the Samsung 840 Pro.

Other Thoughts: Go ahead and be a sucker like me and by this sub standard card.
