5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: I bought this card 11 months ago and have 10 1TB drives connected to it in RAID 6, this card is amazingly fast, and have had issues with power to 2 of the drives where I lost both at the same time, (hot swap slot related, nothing to do with the 3ware card) and had no issues accessing or writing data, while those drives rebuilt.

Cons: None to date.

Other Thoughts: This card is perfect if your looking for a reliable piece of hardware to support your RAID environment. I Recommend this to everyone!

5 out of 5 eggsnever knew what a raid was until now...

Pros: Way fast, like, wow! I'm used to on board raids, this thing actually goes super fast though, tests showed 900mb/s read speed, awesome! compared to 245mb/s for on board raid.

Cons: Doesn't come with the led panel to show which drive has failed, but you can make your own i guess?

Other Thoughts: using this in a virtual environment (vmware esx vsphere 4.0), very pleased with the setup

5 out of 5 eggsA prime time player

Pros: This SATA Raid card works similarly to SCSI cards in that it has its own BIOS which displays just after the mobo BIOS (access with Ctl+3.) During configuration I was also offered the option to create more than one partition. Justice is not done to the quality of this card's design without investing in a high-end case with a SATA backplane,...and a known-stable motherboard.

Cons: Takes a LOT of patience to configure the array(s) correctly, because of all the options (Raid 0, 1, 5, 6, etc,) but the design of the configuration utility is elegant and efficient. The documentation does not mention that the "separate boot partition" will also be your root partition. Think in terms of root, home, swap when choosing the size of this partition. It's not trivial.

Other Thoughts: The battery backup unit must be purchased separately. It takes 24 hours to charge the BBU. But it carries that charge for 255 hours,...more than adequate time to respond to a power failure.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and VERY Reliable

Pros: You know what I really like about this card? That once you set it up, it really just works! It's also quite fast and very reliable. Never needs attention! I've added the battery backup and am running a RAID 5 data array of 5x500 GB Seagates, for 1.8 TB formated. Feel my data is as safe as I can reasonably make it inside the case.

Cons: It is pricey. And the UI in Windows is clunky. But in this case, you do get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I still back up to external 2TB array from time to time, to protect against other data threats besides disk failures in the main case. Config: XP SP3, Intel 975XBX2 MoBo, Intel Q6600 quad overclocked 25% to 3 GHz, 4 Gig Acer PC800 RAM, etc.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Card

Pros: Excellent RAID 5 performance. The web and BIOS interface are both easy to use. I was up and running in just a couple of minutes. If you have enough drives you can migrate between RAID levels without data loss.

Cons: It is somewhat pricey but well worth the cost if you want a reliable, high performance card.

Other Thoughts: I've been running this card for over a year and had zero problems with it. The drivers provided by 3ware are very well written and available for many platforms.

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect...

Pros: Fast as expected
Delayed drive spinup
Using beta drivers and firmware it works great under vista 64 bit sp 0

Cons: Will not work on Vista 64 bit sp 1

Other Thoughts: I've spent well over 40 hours loading and reloading my computer trying to get vista svp 1 installed and functional with this card... no dice. Hopefully the "official" vista/2008 drivers (due in august) will resolve my issues.

5 out of 5 eggsAddendum to my first review

Pros: Just an additional note - RAID 6 operation is flawless, as is migration from RAID 5. Have added 2 drives without any problems at all.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: N/A

2 out of 5 eggsQuality card but NOT retail box

Pros: Very powerful, fast and high quality card. Works nice with Centos 5. Both browser-based and CLI mgmt software. Need to download driver from 3ware for Centos5 though. Great order processing and 3-day shipping from newegg. However on this order, I rate it 2 since Newegg mis-led buyers. The shipped box is a white box only (card + CD). It is not a retail box. You've got to buy the breakout cables from elsewhere. New egg's senior agent may promise you the refund for this extra cost. However, you may never see the money back as what happened to me.

Cons: No cons for the card. Not a retail box which is full-colored box and containing accessories like the sata break-out cables. It won't be easier than nowaday's rebate process to get Newegg refunding you the cable cost.

Other Thoughts: BBU is not worthy. The same price will buy you a good UPS from which you'll benefit more. Don't turn off caching and queueing in the controller settings. Otherwise, it will be way two slow.

5 out of 5 eggsBuy The BBU With This Card

Pros: I read a lot about all of the leading cards before selecting the 9650SE. I purchased 6 150GB Raptors with it. and added a second array of WD5000's.

There is a bit of a learning curve to setting this up and using the Bios interface and the 3DM2 web interface, both of which are good.

I've been doing some SQL Server performance testing against my DELL server with attached SCSI array. Read operations are generally much faster. The insert and update ops have mixed results with some being faster and some slower. I will know more when I start doing my real world work with the 9650SE/Raptor setup.

Cons: Not a con, but I discovered that performance is hugely increased using the "Performance" Settings on these arrays and the Windows policy "Enable Advanced Features". But this feature is unsafe even with a UPS. They don't sell the BBU-MODULE-03 on Newegg.com, but it can be found elsewere for about $xxx - worth it. I would also recommend buying the 12ML or 16ML even if you don't need that many ports.

Other Thoughts: The retail unit comes with a nice set of breakout cables. The 3ware web site is great for downloads and support. Inquiries were responded to promptly. This was a concern for me with some of the other raid products.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Controller

Pros: I am a user of the 9500 series. This card is so much faster. RAID 5 writes fly. Verification proceeds much faster. The included Multilane breakout cables are a treat to use. Installation was quick and painless. And, 3Ware tech support answers their phone and responds to email. That alone is worth the price of admission.

Cons: Well, it is expensive, but no more so than the Areca cards, which I would consider to be 3ware's only real competition. I found no "real" cons to this card or other 3Ware products.

Other Thoughts: I cannot emphasize enough 3Ware's live, knowledgeable, responsive tech support. If you want to deal with RAID card manufacturers residing on another continent and/or who sell cheapo cards, I wish you the best. I'll stick with 3Ware.
