4 out of 5 eggsGood

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: Does what I need it to do.

Cons: Hot as hell.

Other Thoughts: Got the BBU to utilize the full functionality of the card. (Will only run advanced performance features with BBU present).
Got a Chenbro 24 port SAS6G Expander. Who needs to buy a raid card with more than 1 port??
8x 3TB (Reds) Raid 50. 3x300 Raid 0 Raptors. Been running with 0 errors and rebuilds for more than 2 years since 3TB reds came out.
Give the card some breathing room, there is no built in fan and with the BBU and its automated BBU tests, temps go wayyy up on the card (80+ C) when squeezed inbetween other cards.
Got this card on sale + got the sas expander cheap which makes the overall cost way less than a comparable 16 port card.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome RAID

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: I have used over 10 of these cards in the past 2 years and have been excellent for performance and recovery.
Have used with with Windows Server 2008 R2 (Server 2012 after an update) and ESXi. ESXi took little work. Google is your friend.

Cons: Only Con is they make it very hard to find and download the Windows Management Software. Had to download the ISO for a completely different card and extract the RAID software so I can manage this in Windows. At least this management software works with Dell Perc also and visa versa.

Other Thoughts: Dell Perc just rebranded 3Ware/LSI. Since using 3Ware a long time ago, I'm never using anything else. Has proven itself to me in disasters on RAID1 and RAID5 which is what I really care about. It is a RAID after all. Software RAID make it almost impossible to recover without being in the operating system. You have many options with this hardware RAID.

Have done RAID5 with lesser versions of these cards and have worked well. I'm only using RAID1 with Hotspare now and is much faster. Haven't tried any other RAID configurations yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card, very versatile

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: Reliable, fast, easy to configure, works with desktop-class drives. Running 4x Seagate Barracuda 2TB drives, and sometimes Toshiba DT01ACA200 2TB drives if I have a problem with the Barracudas and need to swap out for RMA.

Cons: None really. My server is on a UPS, so really not a problem to operate in RAID5/6 without the battery unit.

Other Thoughts: Considering using an expander to bump this up to 24 ports...as it can enumerate 96 drives.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not work with recent disks

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: Well-supported controller, works with Linux out of the box.

Cons: Doesn't work with some recent disks, even enterprise models, e.g., Seagate Constellation ES 1TB (ST1000NM0011). Even after firmware update, this drive will only run at 1.5Gbps, even though both disk and controller can do 6Gbps. Seagate blames 3ware firmware.

Other Thoughts: Check ahead of time whether your intended drives are compatible. Buy spares so you don't run out after working drives have gone EOL.

5 out of 5 eggsexcelllent product

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: Works flawlessly. I've used 3ware controllers for 6 years. Outstanding tech support. No wait time. Excellent driver & software support.

Cons: Since LSI bought 3ware, sometimes you'll get an LSI guy instead of a 3ware guy on the phone. 3ware techs that have been there for years know much more about the product.

Other Thoughts: Like any product, you need to know how to use the software. It is important to know the bios version and windows version because I do different tasks in each. It pays to download the 380 page manual and read it. Does not work with win xp. When installing win 7, you need to create a single disk in 3BM (bios) before windows 7 can find the drive and install the drivers you want (x64 or x86).

5 out of 5 eggsfast card

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: Put the card in a supermicro 2u server with 4x 2tb hitachi drives connected by an 8087 to sata x4 cable. Running in raid 5 it took about 8 hours to initialize the array. The card is extremely fast and seems to work well under heavy multi user access. I'm seeing an average read speed of around 350mb/s.

Cons: only 1 8087 connector. I regret not getting the card with 2 connectors but that's my fault, not 3wares.

Other Thoughts: The first card I got was %100 DOA, wouldn't even light up leds on it. Talked to 3ware (lsi) support who were all US based and they got me a new card shipped fast.

The battery backup for this card is expensive.

2 out of 5 eggsCheck compatibility closely!

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: This should, in theory, be a great card, but I never got the chance to find out.

Cons: No drivers or support for Windows XP! LSI provides poor and inconsistent documentation of their products, which now extends to 3ware since their acquisition.

3 out of 5 eggsLinux Issues

This review is from: 3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Kit

Pros: Specs on the card indicate that this should be fast and very nice.

Cons: Unfortunately, there are some serious driver issues with Linux. The driver keeps resetting the card in spite of BIOS issues.

Other Thoughts: Should work great with Windows systems.
