5 out of 5 eggsGreat card, but know your tech

Pros: This card works great for a simple RAID 0,1, or 10 setup. It does not have a battery backed cache so RAID 5 and 50 are going to be very slow performing and there will not be any hardware assisted write-back caching mechanism. Where this card really shines is when you put it in IT mode. In IT mode, it will behave the same as a motherboard SATA controller. What is nice is that you can use SAS expanders with it and attach a ton of drives. This is great for things like FreeNAS, NAS4Free, or Xpenology. I personally use it for passthrough on a Xpenology VM with ESXi and it works great in that application, and is VERY fast.

Cons: No hardware assisted RAID, but you should have known that and done your research before buying the card.

Other Thoughts: The card works fine on UEFI bios. What other reviewers have probably not done is enabled Legacy BIOS support and/or Option ROM support. This is basic troubleshooting 101 people. Do your research, Google your problem, and come to a solution. I personally use this on a U-NAS 8 drive enclosure with a Gigabyte motherboard and a Xeon E3-1225v2. Everything is flawless and so far reliable.

3 out of 5 eggsgood card, but buyer beware!

Pros: When this card works, its very fast and works great with my Seagate Constellation es.2 SAS drives. It has been very reliable, and works with most operating systems.

Cons: This card does not appear to work in any motherboard that comes with a UEFI bios. I've tried in Gigabyte and ASRock boards, and using Centos 6.5, FreeBSD 10, and Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04. 3Ware and Intel raid cards do not have this problem. I blame this on the LSI firmware. You would think LSI could correct this problem, but they have never bothered.

3 out of 5 eggsIt depends on your system

Pros: It's cheap, if it works with your system it will do the job

Cons: As others have said, there's no cache on the card. This means write performance will be bad as it can't buffer the writes. I would never use these cards on a system where there will be a lot of writes but in a realm where it's mostly reads they are quite serviceable.

I used this card for 3 years with my Asus X58 board. Unfortunately I'm now getting nowhere trying to make it work on my Asus X79 board.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Garbage

Pros: none

Cons: Does not work. Support does not run out of business hours, support team has no product knowledge. It took three weeks for me to in the configuration menu after trying several different webios updates, drivers do not work on windows 7/64. The only solution offered was for me to mix and match drivers with bios versions. DO NOT BUY

1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE!

Pros: None - needs to work to have some!

Cons: It was technically compatible with my mbo, but came with OLD bios (2009) and my MBO was not certified until after. No way to upgrade to more recent bios w/o a MBO that worked, per LSI support. Had to return.

Other Thoughts: Really, the more I researched this board, the more I learned it has a horrible track record .. even on stated compatible mbo.

Look elsewhere on this..

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great on Intel S1200KP

Pros: Card works exactly as described and expected.

Cons: Management/Monitoring app complains about some device reset when it first launches in Windows but I haven't noticed any problem caused by this.

2 out of 5 eggsBahh..

Pros: Bahh.. Price ?..

Cons: Not Too sure if it was really an Hardware Raid, it give you pretty much the same thing that's built in many board (Asus P5B-M for example) I returned it and went for a Adaptec 6805Q

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Little Card

Pros: This card has been running a 9.2TB array with 7 WD RE4-GP 2TB drives (RAID 5 with a hot spare). for over a year now with not a single hiccup. Drivers and management utility have been great on W2k8 R2. It is perfect for backing up my systems and keeping a copy of all my encoded movies. Plus, it runs nice and cool.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It may not be as fast as its more robust siblings but it is fine for what I need and it runs so nice and cool. Heat is a real problem these days so lower heat and less power usage was one of my main considerations for this server.

1 out of 5 eggsMegaRAID SAS 9240-8i poor performance

Pros: Raid 0 is very fast at around 400MBps (4x1TB SATA)

Cons: Raid 5 is a dog giving performance of around 15MBps, yes, that's one-five 15MBps.

Other Thoughts: LSI were just not intertested, I did everything they said - upgrade firmware, reinstalled the operating system etc. They gave me all the usual nonsense about depends what else the machine is doing (it wasn't doing anything else), "we can't see a problem" etc. This card has terrible performance in Raid 5, but is very fast in Raid 0. LSI dissapoint me, I wish it was still 3Ware.

5 out of 5 eggs500 MB/s with mechanical drives is great!

Pros: I love this card. I have in 3 machines.

500 MB/s with SAS drives is fantastic, 4 of them in R1+0

I have 4 other drives, SATA II, N82E16822152202, R1+0, they get 250+ MB/s

For the price paid at the time (129.99 per drive), fantastic!

The price of this card is great!

Easy setup

They come with the cables you need!

No onboard cache but that doesn't seem to matter much with the performance I am getting.

I'd like to try this card with SSD and see what it could do!

Cons: Slow rebuild and verify integrity times. As in, a day and a half for my huge volumes, but it seems to happen in the background, which is a plus. Can't break an egg for it though!

Other Thoughts: I would buy this again!
