LSI MegaRAID SAS 9265/9285 series controller cards, powered by the LSISAS2208 dual-core 6Gb/c SAS RAID-on-Chip (ROC), deliver the industry’s highest server RAID IOPS and bandwidth, extending the performance leadership offered by the existing family of LSI 6Gb/s SATA+SAS MegaRAID controllers. This second-generation 6Gb/s SAS MegaRAID series includes an 8-port internal controller (9265-8i) and 8-port external controller (9285-8e) to address high-performance storage requirements for both inside and outside the server. The low profile MD2 form factor controllers feature the LSISAS2208 SAS ROC IC with two 800MHz PowerPC processor cores and 1GB DDRIII cache memory. The 9265-8i card provide support for up to 128 SATA and SAS hard drives or solid state drives (SSDs), and support hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

LSI uses the latest technology and features on the second-generation 9265/9285 series designed to deliver significant performance improvements over the existing industry-leading LSI 6Gb/s MegaRAID controllers. Additionally, the 9265/9285 controllers outperform the competition with unmatched RAID IOPS, bandwidth and SSD support.

  • newegg Support Up to 128 SATA and/or SAS Devices The LSI MegaRAID SAS 9265-8i features hot-pluggable, SATA-compatible SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) ports to provide 6Gb/s data transfer rates for optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.
  • newegg Unrivaled Performance Featuring LSISAS2208 dual-core ROC equipped with two 800MHz PowerPC processor cores and a 72-bit DDRIII interface that drives 1GB cache memory, the LSI MegaRAID SAS 9265-8i delivers the industry's highest server RAID IOPS and bandwidth, perfect for database applications and digital media environments.
  • newegg More Performance Boost with FastPath LSI internal benchmark testing shows that measured IOPS for this second-generation 6Gb/s SATA+SAS RAID controller from LSI surpass 200,000, and exceed 465,000 IOPS when used in conjunction with MegaRAID FastPath software in SSD environments, meeting the high I/O transaction demands of datacenters, database and cloud applications.
  • newegg RAID Support The LSI MegaRAID SAS 9265-8i supports multi-level RAID configuration including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and RAID spans 10, 50, 60 for better performance, enhanced data security and flexible capacity upgrades.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for SSD RAID!!!

Pros: 1. very fast
2. easy to configure (as long as it is compatible with your motherboard and you have access to WebBIOS on bootup)
3. very small size card
4. comes with SFF-8087 cables
5. cheaper than Areca's equivalent solutions which are not as stable/fast
6. SFF connectors are located facing up which is the best way and minimizes the space it takes up

Cons: 1. does generate some heat but not too bad if you have decent cooling in your case
2. if you don't have a UPS, then you should buy the BBU so you can enable write-back mode for high performance which is expensive/over-priced in my opinion
3. cables are a little too long for my configuration but i won't deduct any eggs for this as I would be complaining if they were too short

Other Thoughts: I have 8 x Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD's in a RAID 0 connected to this adapter. Using the ATTO benchmark at 64k, I get 2869759 MB/s for read and 2469109 MB/s for the write as transfer rates. At higher than 64k test sizes, I hit a maximum of 3495596 read and 2776918 write which is great! Games load instantly, file copies are fast, and editing multimedia and encoding is lightning fast. I like the management software that LSI uses as it is the same as the other adapters I own. I have the 9260-8i and 9260-16i in a server and have never had any problems with either one (they are managing two RAID 6 arrays with 24 drives total between them). I highly recommend this adapter if you are using SSD's or hard drives.

One thing to note is that I used two 5.25" Thermaltake enclosures which have 4 x 2.5" SATA bays each. Their specs say they are only SATA I and II but obviously from the transfer rates I am getting they are SATA III compatible/capable. I knew SATA II and III cables are identical but I wasn't sure about the backplanes being capable of SATA III speeds and it turned out they were for the Thermaltake enclosures.

Also, contrary to what some people have stated about LSI RAID adapters, you can set it to write-back mode without having to buy the BBU. Maybe they didn't upgrade the firmware and MegaRAID Storage Manager software???

I have tried Areca's RAID controllers for both work and personal use before. I found them to be slower and definitely a lot less stable. Maybe they have improved their firmware/drivers but I won't buy anything but LSI or 3ware adapters (same company now). I have not had any of my LSI adapters fail yet.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Experience

Pros: Fast! (when it was working). 2 GB/s read and 3GP/s write in a 8 SSD Raid-0

Cons: This card is very finicky when used on a MB with SLI (according to LSI). Also, they specifically called out EVGA motherboards and problematic.
To create the array I had to scrounge up a PS2 keyboard (USB it doesn't like) and then use their GUI. The GUI looks like something I wrote back in the 1970's on my Apple II+.
Does not come with SAS to SATA cables so you need to buy those separately.
I finally RMA'd the thing back to Newegg after wasting three days of my life trying to get this to work.
Oh, and let me mention the alarm on the card! It is loud and annoying - and you can't turn it off unless you cut the power.

Other Thoughts: I wanted this card to work so badly because for the brief 10 minutes it worked correctly it was blazingly fast. You might want to check with LSI to see if your MB/hardware combo is acceptable before buying.
