Question 1

Does this rack unit have a floor or is the bottom open? We have a free standing APC Backups 1500 -it's not the rack-mount type- and I would like to know if it can sit in the bottom so it isn't an eyesore outside the rack.

This unit is flexible as far as set up.  You can look up unit on the Norco website.  They have PDF assembly instructions with photos.

This is a great cabinet.  You can construct unit with no shelving and put anything inside.  The top and bottom metal parts are perforated for ventilation. This cabinet offers great ventilation and some noise reduction for servers.

There are additional shelving options on Norco website for this unit that I did not find on Newegg.

Question 2

How sturdy is the rack? I have an existing HP 42U and it's build like a tank. Is it sturdy? Does the top wobble from the base at all?

I've never had it wobble even with everything mounted close to the top. Even though it had wheels it also has stationary legs that can be adjusted very close to the floor to prevent tipping when rolling from one place to another. This rack only comes up to chest level so someone would have to put some effort into tipping it over.

Question 3

Does the device come with decent instructions? How did it come to you? Did you receive a box about 6-12 inches high needing to be assembled or a 4ft box fully assembled?

No it comes with horrible instructions you should just throwaway. Norco themselves give a link for new instructions (see other comments) but even these aren't the best...

It will get delievered in about 2 weeks (its freight not UPS it takes a while) in 4 big boxes and you have to build it. It took me and a friend about 4-5 hours to figure out how to build it properly. (We've never built a rack before.) And mounting the internal rails can be super difficult if you don't have rack cage nuts tool.
That being said, the only negative parts about this was one of my doors was slightly bent (not worth the trouble to ship back) and very small areas have a little bit of powder coat paint missing but thats it.
Once it's built you will never have to take it apart. (you could if you wanted). But there's no point. The doors and side pannels come off easily (but can be locked) and once you remove all the things mounted, its light enough to carry. (not light but... enough).

All in all, this rack is great for the price. I'm very happy I got it!

Question 4

Does this include any shelves? If not, which shelves do you recommend on newegg?

No this does not include any shelves. It comes with the case, the doors and side doors and a box of bolts and cage nuts.
The self you buy will depend on what you want to put on it. I have my ISP box, some external haddrives and a raspberry pi. It doesn't weight alot so I got the Tripp Lite SRSHELF2P. It's a 2U which anchors better to the rack than a 1U and can hold more weight. If you want to put a big heavy UPS on the self then you will need something that mounts to all 4 points instead of only 2 points like my shelf. But, because mine only mounts in the front, I mounted a power strip (Cyberpower CPS-1215RMS) behind it to make the most use of the space (Out of the 2U the shelf uses, mount the strip on the top U not the bottom U.)

Does this Cabinet come with any hardware? Screws, scre backing, keys ext?

Yes, It came with a bag of screws, keys, etc.  BTW, even though you have to assemble it, it comes on a pallet so plan on needing some space to unpack it & then assembling it.

Is this rack compatible with rack mounted Dell servers? Also, do you make a half-rack?

I purchased this for a series of servers, a few Dell, a few Lenovo, and two Cisco servers.  I had no comparability issues.  The only thing I was not aware of is half of my servers are longer than the device.   I have it so the back door is not in use for the setup to work for me.  The servers themselves fit no problem, it is 3 of the rails that extend past the door in the rear.

does the front door lock?

The front door does, in fact lock.  Though the locks (all around) are pretty hacky.  The door [handles] both have one key and then the side panels have another. The door keys look like "normal" keys at about 15mm long and 8-9mm wide but the panel keys are semi-ovular with little circular indentations that look easy to 'bump key'.  Certainly not a product for the security-minded purchaser.

it fit a dell 2970 but was a little too short for the rear cable arm. you can compair the 2970 specs with your servers length and rail mounts to get a good idea of size openings.
