4 out of 5 eggsGood for home usage

Pros: I am impressed that this cage allows the re-utilization of old cases, converting wasted 5 1/4" bays to useful disk holding space. The cage is constructed of aluminum sides and plastic bezel in the front and back. The fan keeps drives relatively cool. More so this cage comes with cables and screws to completely.install.

Cons: I was a little disappointed in the construction as this is a cage-less design. I'm not 100% positive if it is just me being used to putting HDD's in trays and locking them down, but the design seems a little cheap.

Other Thoughts: I finally got around to installing this cage in a home built NAS box I'm putting together. I purchased this item less than a year ago, and just now got around to installing it into a full server 4U rack (coincidentally made by iStarUSA as well). The cage fit directly into one of the sides and instantly converted the 3 - 5 1/4" bays into a 5 drive block.

My biggest concern is that once I put a SATA cable on the back, I went to gently pull out the cable, and the plastic plug on the cage started to pull off as well. I realized what was happening and stopped, but it's still the principle. Go figure that after any sort of RMA window has passed, I would get around to finding out that the Sata connectors are very touchy.

All in all I give this a very positive review. I'll be purchasing another one in the near future when I expand the size of my NAS.

4 out of 5 eggsGood 5 Drive Cage

Pros: 1) Comes with 5 locking SATA data cables.
2) Works right out of the box.
3) Can mount 2.5" and 3.5" drives.
4) Almost all metal, feels solid.
5) Instructions fairly clear.
6) Well packaged.

Cons: 1) Fan Noisy.
2) Bezel labeling is sideways and not well laid out.
3) Cannot use right angled SATA data or power connectors, must be straight.
4) Only enough screws (special for the cage) to mount five 3.5" drives and/or five 2.5" drives. Don't loose one!

Other Thoughts: Of course the fan is noisy, you have seen it before. The High/Low fan switch puts out either 12 or 9VDC respectively to the fan hot (red) lead. If the 9VDC were reduced to say 5VDC the fan would be almost silent.

You can install an 80mm full sized fan but the screws which come with the device are too short to hold the fan in place. If you flip the fan over and make it an exhaust fan then you solve needing the fan mounted as it will sit secure and will not hit the circuit board but you also now do not pull debris into the case.

The Bezel is not correct. This cage was designed to mount into a 3 drive bay, the symbols are all sideways! The Drive activity lights are grouped together and not under each drive cage as they should have been. The power symbols are sideways. It's lack of attention to detail just to rush a product to market. I took away one egg because of all the CONs. A 5 egg product to me is more than "it just works."

Power connectors: You can mix these up, they are all the same electrically. At least connect 2 up, my personal opinion is 3 connections if you have any plans to install all five cages with standard spinning hard drives.

I would recommend this product.

5 out of 5 eggsReady to mod your case?

Pros: I recently bought a second one of these. They're really good. You get great disk-to-space efficiency, and after you replace the fan, you get good airflow. Your standard 7200rpm drives will hover around 70-110 F, depending on the load they're under. Since the point of concern is 140F, that's acceptable.

Cons: Add $10 on to the price, and buy yourself some replacement 80mm fans. I'm not sure if the Egg lets me put brands in, but I bought a pair of $9.99 Zalman slim 80mms from here, and ran dedicated power to them straight from the PSU, bypassing the onboard fan and alarm. A quick jumper change, and the buzzer is disabled. Worth it? You bet. Any worthwhile RAID controller will freak out all on it's own via SMART if the drive starts to overheat. Which it won't, after you replace the fan.

And you're going to replace the fan, if your system that contains this cage is in the same room as you. It's just too noisy. End of discussion.

Other Thoughts: All in all, it's worth the price and the modification you'll have to do to your case. Most cases have thin flanges that stick out to support drives in the 5.25 bays. Since there's no grooves designed into these things to accomodate those flanges, get your precision cutting device (or your hammer) out, and 5 minutes later, this will fit just fine.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product

Pros: I really like the fact I can put 5 hard drives in this unit. It also has a fan failure and overheat buzzer. The ability to lock each tray is nice so you don't accidentally eject a drive. It has two fan speeds for the noise conscious, and keeps my 7200rpm drives nice and cool. Probably my favorite feature is the individual activity lights, which really help to identify troublesome drives.

Cons: I've had this thing for over 2 years now, and so far I've had to lubricate the fan twice. It uses a unique connector so I'd have to splice wires to replace it. It has also developed a very annoying rattle from some of the trays. I think it's mostly due to the fact that some of my drives vibrate a lot, but there should be no reason for it to cause a problem. I solved it with some clever use of electrical tape acting as a damper. It would also be nice if I didn't have to bend the drive bay tabs to get this to fit in my case.

Other Thoughts: I'm thinking about getting another one to host another RAID 5 array as my current one is almost full.

2 out of 5 eggsMine was defective

Pros: The SATA connections worked and the HDD trays were quite easy to remove and reinsert. Included an internal SATA cable for each intended connection.

Cons: Ordering products is generally a game of change albeit I am generally successful; unfortunately, the RAID cage I received was defective and I regret lowering the rating for this product. The SATA headers for HDD 1 and 2 were cracked; even if serviceable. The cooling fan would not start which caused the alarm to sound. The internal fan seemed to be an 80mm but the fan power connection is atypical so a replacement was not possible. It seems the fan speed switch is faulty.

Other Thoughts: I hope the RMA replacement is better than this.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat RAID cage!

Pros: Works well out of the box. Optional adjustments are available but weren't necessary for my application.

Cons: I had to bend some metal to get this to fit in the case I used. Not sure if this is really a con for this item - probably more for the old case I'm using. Haven't tried it in other cases.

Other Thoughts: Used for a five-disk NAS.

4 out of 5 eggsI recommend this product

Pros: Provides individual LED activity status for each drive. Good build quality. Comes with 5 SATA cables with clips. Can use either 3 molex or 2 SATA power connectors (don't use both - just molex or SATA). Keeps drives very cool.

Cons: Trays are aluminum with plastic fronts - easy to pop out accidentally if you don't lock them, but hard to lock if you have large fingers. No key locks. SATA data connectors seem loose.

Other Thoughts: Easy to screw drives into trays and pop into the chasis, but it was a little hard to turn the locks so drives don't pop out (easy to do if not locked). Easy to connect, but I then had unreliable results getting drives to be recognized, and when they were, system was unstable. Change out the cheap SATA cables that came with my motherboard for the clip SATA cables that came with the unit, and problem solved. Some report the fan is loud, but so far it doesn't seem to be; maybe if I had a quiet system it would be loud, but it doesn't overpower the other fan noises from my system. Good airflow keeps drives cool. I really like the individual LED activity status for each drive, helps to know which drives my system is accessing. You can get extra drive trays from several manufacturers. iStar also makes trays with Red, Blue, and Silver fronts, but I could not find those individually. Would be nice to color code my 3 RAID drives with one color front, and my non-RAID drives with a different color

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: Works as intended, keeps the drives cool considering how jam packed they are.

Cons: The instructions are horrible. Its a single page with one picture and I thought my cage was DOA when it said to use a Philips screw driver to turn on each bay. You really need something much longer like a paperclip to really push them in and have them stick so they will stay on. Otherwise they will turn off and on with any jiggling.

Other Thoughts: Worth the money just have better instructions!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This device is great. I have mine set up using a RAID 5 configuration using five 750GB hard drives. It runs smooth and is quiet. Several others I have tried in the past have been very noisy, but not this one. This is a great buy and worth every penny.

Cons: The power buttons for the hard drives are a bit sticky and sometimes do not power off right away. I had to mount mine sideways (hard drives virtical) for it to fit properly in my case.

Other Thoughts: Reguardless of these small minor issues I would buy this product again. 5 Eggs for me.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: 5 SATA slots in 3 5.25 bays, doesn't get any better than that. Has the option of either SATA or Molex style power connection. Even though I didn't use them, the SATA cables it ships with are very high quality. Feels very sturdy.

Cons: Fan is a bit loud, but I'm kind of a baby about it, it's not obnoxious by any means.

Other Thoughts: If you have a case like mine that has little tabs for guides on the 5.25 bays, don't bother with the Dremel. Just grab an adjustable wrench, grab the tab and bend it up and down until it heats up and snaps off.
