5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Jumbo Frames, Inexpensive, Very Quiet

Cons: I haven't found any yet.

Other Thoughts: My old gig switch had a fan so now when I walk in I always think something is wrong because it's silent. The power flashed the other night and my other gig switch locked up and this one kept purring.

5 out of 5 eggssilent little helper

Pros: This little device has just been wonderful. Installation was easy as pie and we've never had any hiccups with it at all. Very quiet and it does its job well. It has little rubber legs on the bottom and little niches on top to make it easily stackable. We've had 1 for almost 2 months and I'm about to order a second!

Cons: I had it located stacked atop an SMC 8508T gbit switch. Needing to purchase another gbit switch now, the other day I was trying to decide which model I would order since both have been excellent for us. To compare differences between the 2 models,
1) the lights for the SMC are on the same side as the ports while the D-Link has the indicator lights on the reverse side as the cable ports.
2) even though the SMC and the D-Link switches are roughly the same width, the SMC model is a bit more rugged/industrial looking and also came with rack mounting hardware.
3) the SMC costs roughly 2x as much as the D-Link.
I suggest if you want a desktop gbit switch, get the D-Link otherwise get the SMC.

2 out of 5 eggsToo sensitive to A/C power line

Pros: Inexpensive, good for use on a desktop since the indicator lights are on the front and all the connections are on the back.

Cons: Unfortunately this switch appears to be very sensitive to power line sags. The switch reboots (dropping existing connections) when there is an A/C line voltage dip -- for example, a sag due to turning on a high load device like a laser printer warming up or a 'fridge turning on elsewhere on the same circuit.

5 out of 5 eggsGood buy

Pros: Great speed, relatively compact, even the price is good.

Cons: Enclosure isn't very good for cooling (it doesn't really need it, but still)

Other Thoughts: I did a ping test on this thing and I got lower pings by plugging into the switch, than the router it is connected to. The AC adapter on mine only gets a little warm, and it hasn't died yet. No complaints.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Very fast, easy to use. Cable troubleshooting was also a nice touch.

Cons: None really, but it does get kind of warm, and the lights blink like crazy, not that thats a real problem though.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this product and other D-Link products to everyone. They are much cheaper than other brands and work much better. I ordered one for my LAN parties, and another is on the way. Not to mention the great newegg shipping!

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive, does the job

Pros: Affordable gigabit, plug it in and it works. Ports are on the back. Port LEDs show different color for gigabit connection.

Cons: LEDs have constant flash rate, not proportional to traffic. Gotta be a real nerd to care about something like that.

Other Thoughts: Gets a little warm, nothing serious.

3 out of 5 eggsShipping problems

Pros: Good product. Ive had one of these running my home network for more than a year now without problems.

Cons: I have seen an issue where if im transfering files from one computer and then I delete a file off of the transferring computer I lose connection. This is a rare occurance however and Id still buy another one of these.

Other Thoughts: Shipping UPS. I tracked the package on UPS for a couple days. I live in Idaho but on day two UPS's tracking showed the package out for delivery in Utah? So I called UPS to find out what was happening. The first lady I talked to was just as confused as me. The second person I talked to said that this was normal. Ive tracked a lot of packages on UPS coming the exact same route from Newegg and this was the first time Id ever seen one of my packages out for deliver in Utah. Funny thing is the package showed up ontime.. but in a FedEx box :)
