4 out of 5 eggsSolid Construction, Okay Implimentation

Pros: Pros - solid aluminum construction, easy action, locking mechanism works fairly good.

Cons: Once the fans start to go they will make some pretty bad noise.

Other Thoughts: You can unplug the fans on the removable tray once they start to make too much noise.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Rack, bad Company

Pros: it works and does everything you would expect. Love the device itself.

Cons: AthenaPower is an AWFUL company to deal with once it breaks. The Techs don't speak english, it took me 3 tries to get an RMA number, and their phone service is awful.

I have been calling them since the 3rd and there has been NO answer and no replies to my email.

Other Thoughts: AthenaPower deserves to go out of business

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to prior review from Dec '07

Pros: Sturdy aluminum construction. Compact length (compared to other brands).

Cons: Uses drive's own connector each time the tray is docked into the rack, so do it gently. Must use key each time to insert/remove & power-up/power-down (unless you jury-rig the lock system). Rate of fan failure is high after 6 months and almost universal after 1 year. Sometimes, factory new and sealed units are missing the very specialized screws needed to attach the drive from the bottom of the tray.

Other Thoughts: We use over 60 of these systems at my company. I'm updating my prior review from December 2007 to address the issues of fan failure and the availability of additional trays.

The fans in these units rarely last more than 6-12 months before they start making significant noise. It is a 40x10 mm fan, and it is replaceable. However, getting the wire length right and an appropriate connector fastened does require quite a bit of finesse. I've replaced more than 50 fans on these now.

As pointed out in a recent review, additional Athena Power branded trays are no longer available under newegg item #N82E16817995002. However, a compatible tray (pretty much the same exact OEM tray with different branding) is available under newegg item #N82E16817994078 (as of this date, at least). Overall, I still like these rack systems, although this is partly a comparative evaluation, since so many other systems are of such poor quality.

3 out of 5 eggsCools great, but stock fans are too noisy

Pros: They cool great.

Cons: Stock 40mm fans are too noisy.
Sometimes the connections to my HDD's aren't connected 100%. I have to shutdown, disconnect, reconnect, then start up again.

Other Thoughts: Besides the connections not being perfect, my main gripe was the 40mm fan noise level. I bought Scythe SY124010L 40mm Chipset Fans for each of these racks to replace the stock fans, and had to hard wire them and wrap them in electrical tape. After that, they're really, really quiet! For the price you pay for these, they should really come with better 40mm fans.

One egg off for connection losses.
One egg off for cheap 40mm fans and being pricey.

3 out of 5 eggsWhy the 5 stars?

Pros: It works.

Cons: I figured I should write this review while I plugged in a HDD inside a Dell desktop computer. If you ever did that, you know what I mean: you push a lever and door swings open, you pull a plastic holder, fit the HDD in in about 10 seconds, slap the holder back and the door back. All in all, 30 seconds.
With this rack, the HDD must be fixed in the tray somehow, or its back connectors will never fall in place. I gather people use screws for that, although I never got the manual, on paper or online, so I am not sure how will that work. I use folded pieces of paper to make it fall into place.
When I try to extract the hard drive, it usually doesn't come out at the same time with the tray, so I waste one more minute to fish it out.
For some stupid reason, the rack has a key. It is not a sophisticated one. Your enemies who will want to steal your drive without the computer won't have much work to do. But the key has to sit in the tray if you want electrical contact, and it often falls off

Other Thoughts: I can't believe the ratings. Is this another of those companies that post favourable reviews for their own products?

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Well made, sturdy unit. Have been very pleased with its service. It is much better than other products of this type I've tried.

Cons: none yet.

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these when the extra trays were not in stock. They were supposed to be in in two months. Newegg is not stocking the replaceable trays any longer. Asked if they could get five trays for me, but got no response from them. That is the reason for the low rating. It defeats the purpose I bought these for. My first disappointment from Newegg. Boo!!!

5 out of 5 eggsNice HDD Swapable Rack

Pros: The unit works well and as it is suppose to. I am using it on my main OS drive and havent noticed any issues. The construction seems pretty solid for the price. I didnt notice an excess noise from fans etc..

Cons: The unit use the HD sata connections to intereface with its docking station. Instead of an intereface board to go from HDD to docking station. It works fine using just the HDD sata connections but if you plan on swapping between different drives a couple times a day i would be worried about the sata connections on the drive wearing over time. Just a thought. I will edit this review when i have been using the system longer.

5 out of 5 eggsNice removable rack

Pros: Very well built removable drive-rack. Definitely would get another one.

Cons: I wish that you didn't need to use a key to lock/unlock the drive. I believe in security and protecting your rack from PB&J sandwich insertion (if you have young kids) but I don't need that protection. I wish there was just some type of simple latch built so I wouldn't have to worry about losing a key.

5 out of 5 eggsThese things are pretty good

Pros: I've used various hot swappable drive bays over the year and this is the one I plan on sticking with for the foreseeable future. Because of it's solid aluminum construction I don't live in fear of breaking something when moving the drives around. Because it is metal the rack itself dissipates some of the heat from the HDD.

Cons: As other reviews mentioned these racks have the HDD plug directly into the frame when you insert it. If you frequently are swapping drives or are just wreak less you could end up breaking off your SATA connector.
The built in fans seem to have a 50/50 chance of being noisy. Depending on your airflow setup you could possibly disconnect them but they haven't annoyed me to this level yet.

Other Thoughts: I have 5 of these in a rack mount server with a 6th in a 5.25 USB enclosure. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392004) This allows me to have the option of taking any one of my 5 1Tb HDD's with me when I leave home.

5 out of 5 eggsDelish

Pros: Easy to install (thanks to reading the reviews, I knew it must be locked before my motherboard would recognize it), very handy, the fan makes me feel better. Very convenient, aesthetically appealing.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I've had to swap this out a few times, and I've had to restart to make the new or other hard drive register, which I'm used to. I've taken it out while my system was still on and it didn't break anything...

I am awesome.
