3 out of 5 eggsperforms well but AC adapter is not the best

Pros: USB 3.0 inteface gives fast transfers and seems to be compatible with all USB 3.0 ports.

Cons: AC adapter is not UL approved for safety and actually not FCC approved. The adapter for one of the 2 enclosures I bought in 2010 failed after the warranty expired. Bytecc replaced it for free, but I'm using a UL approved adapter in its place because I don't want my hard drive damaged. There is no EMI filter inside the adapter, as there is with almost every UL approved one, and that may cause audio noise.

Other Thoughts: If you want a drive enclosure with a good AC adapter, get one of the Rosewill models sold here.

Newegg says the warranty is for only 180 days, but Bytecc just confirmed it was for a year.

2 out of 5 eggsGood enclosure paired with low quality AC adapter

Pros: I tested only with USB 2.0 and NEC USB 3.0 interfaces, but the enclosure worked well with all brands of hard disks.

Cons: Cheap AC power adapter that's not UL approved.

I bought 2 of these enclosures in 2010 and another today (none from Newegg). One failed after 2 years when a large transistor in the AC power adapter shorted. This adapter turned out to have no protection against overvoltage and probably not overcurrent, either. The electronics inside the enclosure were apparently unharmed because they still work, with a different, UL approved power adapter. Bytecc used 2 different adapters that share the same model number, one has a long curved line molded into its case, the other with 2 parallel straight lines that form an L. My failed adapter was the version with the curved line. I haven't looked inside the other version, but it's lighter, which rarely indicates higher quality.

Other Thoughts: Speaker noise can be caused by this product, not from poor shielding of the enclosure but due to lack of an AC line filter in the power adapter.

I suggest buying a Newegg Rosewill enclosure instead because the AC adapter will be UL approved, indicating higher quality and less risk to the hard disk.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Enclosure with USB 3.0

Pros: This USB 3.0 external case was my first one purchased and it was very easy to install my 1TB hard drive in it. This is the first time I have written a review about products, just because I like this unit so much.

Cons: I like this external drive because it is quiet. The case needs more holes for Air Flow. So far I have no issue with the heating problem.

Other Thoughts: This USB 3.0 enclosure speed is fast.....

4 out of 5 eggsBytecc USB 3.0 enclosure

Pros: Well I don't understand what the other reviews give this 1 star. It should be 3 or 4 stars!... I put in my (WD20EADS) 2TB drive N it work greats. It is screwless and easy install. I see the Vent is located on the side of the case, so I just put it lay flat and leave it ON for about almost everyday for some time 24hrs. It still work!

Cons: It is faster than a USB 2.0 Speed and a simple slim case for saving space on your Desk. The problem is the power adapter cable too short for me to leave it on the ground.

Other Thoughts: Bytecc really did a great jobs to provide great products for cheap price. Buy this one! Good deal....

1 out of 5 eggsThis this sucks

Pros: USB3.0 is faster than usb 2.0 for a hard drive.

Cons: This unit sucks. I failed to install mine before my 30 days ran out. This unit is not well shielded...and as soon as I turn it on I hear weird sounds coming from my speakers. They go away when I turn the unit off.

The company won't exchange it. Newegg won't take ownership. $50 down the drain.

Other Thoughts: I'll never buy another BYTECC product again...and if the manufacture doesn't offer a warranty of any kind, I won't buy the product from NewEgg.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate. Fried my drive.

Pros: You've been warned by at least two people before you have constant USB 3.0 errors to distract you while it's frying your drive.

Newegg NOW sells alternatives that I think (based on experience with their similar product) are only slightly more expensive, and should work fine. Wish that had been the case when I bought this hot mess.

Cons: My 1TB out-of-warranty drive went into this b-tech sweat box with really great SMART scores. When I finally got it out of there, so that I can pack up this hot mess (literally) of a case to RMA, I was able to smart test again. Drive was nearly dead, MANY different categories of smart test warnings tripped. So IMMEDIATELY went into crisis/save data mode. But this case had so damaged the drive that the drive RIP'd 15 minutes into the image rescue.

Other than that it won't work from the beginnning, but might last you over 30 days before it reveals that it's also killing your drive?

The installation mechanism is TERRIBLE. You get a choice of cheap pads to put on your drive that 1) won't work properly; 2) will SLIGHTLY insultate your drive and raise heat even slightly more. Then you shove it in, IF you can, with the pads giving you resistance.

NO STAND? NO FAN? NO VENTILATION? Just say no.

Other Thoughts: This crazy thing never worked. Have you noticed that it has no stand and no feet? Have you seen the fact that in addition to that, it has no vents?! I wish I had. Because it cost me a 1TB drive of data plus the cost of the drive to find out. And unlock stock, I put temporary FEET on the drive so that 1) it could rest properly; so 2) there could and would be ventilation under the case.

My rosewill SATA case I got from the egg has been a good one. I wish they had had 3.0 when I bought this piece of charcoal. next 3.0 case will be the rosewill variant. But due to this bytec charcoal, I'll now be spending hundreds more for the destruction that the bytech has left in its path.

1 out of 5 eggskyn is right. Unit is failing.

Pros: The pros are you've been warned.

Cons: I'm not going to bother with the simpler and more easily remedied or design manufacturing flaws with this drive. The bottom line is the drive started out wonky, and I attributed it to cables. Then it seemed to work for a a week or two. Now it's definitely in failure mode. My only question is whether it's a controller card failure, or due to the disasterous lack of ventilation and no fan, whether the sucker has fried my drive. Wait for a better product. Don't beta test this bum. Everything kyn said is right.

3 out of 5 eggsSpews Noise into Speakers

Pros: About twice as fast as transferring files as my previous Antec enclosure/HD/USB2.0. I'm using it with an Asus u3s6.

Cons: However, as soon as I removed my 1TB HD from the Antec enclosure and brought this one online (using the same HD), I get a loud hum in my LogiTech 5.1 speaker system. I've one a little moving around, but I have not at this point found a solution. I'll continue to look, but I'm not happy with the situation as it stands now.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent speed, decent enclosure

Pros: I tested the BYTECC HD-35SU3-BK enclosure with a 2TB Hitachi connected to an Asus U3S6 card. Since the main appeal of the faster connection for me was the ability to do backups of non-critical data faster, I began with my iTunes library. 14,136 music and video files weighing in at 102GB transferred in about 35 minutes, hovering between 48MB/s and 52MB/s. This is a VAST improvement over the speed I was seeing with USB 2.0 on this pc.

Drive installation was dead simple and tool-free. The enclosure feels nice and solid, and the brushed metal looks spiffy. The power button is nicely sized and low-profile to avoid accidental shutdowns. The power and activity lights are on the back of the enclosure and are easy to see without casting any noticeable light in the room.

Oh, and it might be a typical thing with USB 3.0 (this is my first foray into the superspeed world), but I really enjoy that there's a satisfying "click" when attaching the USB cable to the enclosure. I've missed th

Cons: The drive has a little room to shimmy from side to side in the enclosure, but the enclosed pads (which were a nice touch) are a little bit too thick. I had some thinner pads lying around as an unused accessory for some other gear, and they fit the bill just fine.

It gets a little warm. I'm not talking painful to the touch, but it could probably help keep your coffee warm if you used it as a coaster (which you should definitely not do).

Other Thoughts: System specs:
Dell Inspiron 530S
Foxconn G33M02 motherboard (Dell variation)
Pentium E2180
2 GB generic DDR2-800
320GB WD Caviar SE16
Asus U3S6 USB 3.0 card
BYTECC HD-35SU3-BK (this enclosure)
HITACHI Deskstar 7K2000 (in enclosure)
