2 out of 5 eggsNeeds To Be Manufactured Better

Pros: Beautiful casing, easy to use.

Cons: Does NOT fit Maxtor drives that well.
Power/Data cables are awkwardly set up.
LED light connection on circuit board interferes with data ribbon's straightness.
Some manufacturing issues like too much glue for said LED light's cable, which causes the drive to not slide in properly.
The backing (with the ports) CAN break off if you are trying to assemble the enclosure correctly due to said defects.

Other Thoughts: I have tried using a Maxtor 120GB IDE disk I'm currently using as a fat PlayStation 2's hard drive. I thought that by connecting the drive to the PC via one of these enclosures, I would have been able to freely add/remove files via USB. But since even during assembly things can go haywire, I'd recommend getting something else.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Beautiful enclosure.

Cons: ...I just can't get the drive in due to wiring, likewise IS STUCK!!! (Maxtor 120GB)

Other Thoughts: I'm planning to use this to move files to and from my PS2 faster than Ethernet.

5 out of 5 eggsVantec NexStar 3 3.5" IDE to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Brilliant Red) - Model NST-360U2-RD

Pros: Worked great to retrieve old files and data from a former win 98 Desktop PC
Still use the Drive as a storage backup to this day.

Cons: Sometimes even after unplugging USB cord from PC (right clicking task bar icon) you have to wait a while for the drive to stop spinning before you can turn it off.
Other times it stops spinning right away.
Not a complaint really.

2 out of 5 eggsBe patient

Pros: Cost

Cons: Very poor cabling design. Limited space for comfortable cable hookup.

Other Thoughts: Give me a plain Jane look and more room. Once again, the marketing department has more clout than the engineering department. I can see me using it this one time, then throwing it in the closet and forgetting I have it.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great. A few fails.

Pros: 1. Looks great

2. Good price

3. Sturdy build - aluminum casing

4. Comes with USB cord

5. Keeps drive cool - copied data to and from disk for several hours straight. Still cool to slightly warm to the touch.

6. LED activity light - I missed these on recent PCs/Drives

7. Easy to assemble - Other than slight cabling issue, this was a snap. Took about 10 minutes to get it running, 5 of those minutes for me to figure out that it wasn't working because I'd forgot to flip the power switch on the back! :(

Cons: 1. Alignment of IDE ports
2. Tight internal cabling
3. Incorrect documentation
4. Short cord
5. Large power adapter
6. Power plug is odd and poorly fitting

1 & 2. This enclosure is designed for an IDE drive with the wide flat ribbon. This cable doesn't readily move in the side to side direction but the attachment to the intermal board of the enclosure didn't line up with the IDE port on the drive. Not even close. Almost a 3/4 inch difference. This made it difficult to insert the drive and probably put undue stress on the cable and pins. Upon sliding the drive assembly into the case, the cables had to be squeezed in.

3. A minor gripe, but the documentation had diagrams putting screws in holes that don't exist.

4. The power cord is quite short, maybe 3 feet, and it's a tight fit from my desk's top to the power strip on the floor (USB cable is even shorter, but it's long enough for my use - Uses what looks like a standard printer USB cable)

See Other thoughts for 5&6

Other Thoughts: 5. The power adapter is quite large and takes up two spaces in my surge protector. A lot of products do this and it's irritating to have a 10 plug strip but only able to use 6 of them. I wish more products had inline adapters and used the standard plugs to go into the outlets

6. The power plug into the back of the device is a round plug with 4 prongs. Without careful inspection it's hard to tell which way to insert it into the device.

There were a few small things that made we wonder about the product at first. I always think that if a manufacturer hasn't got these little easy things down, how can I trust the product over all? I've only been using for one day, I'll update after a few weeks.

Overall, this seems to work nicely for my use with an unimportant storage drive I've had sitting around unused.

5 out of 5 eggsridiculously easy

Pros: From box to operating, under 15 minutes. Took longer to find the right WD600 jumper settings on the web. HD from an old dell tower running XP, recognized, installed drivers, and operated automatically in Win7. No problems with cables or tight fit ... lots of room if you run the cables right.

Cons: The power cord is short only because I have the unit on a shelf above the desk. USB cable is fine for length.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure why other reviewers had trouble getting the drive in the housing. Piece of cake. Works fine (but I just received it today).

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what they say they will do!

Pros: It was easy enough to get information off of several old IED drives I had from previous computers I had owned and swapping out drives was really pretty easy to do.

This is my second NexStar External HD Enclosure. The Red and Blue colors help me keep them seperate in my feeble brain and they loook nice. They both stay really cool to the touch.

I received my order on time as advertised.

Bottom Line: New Egg and the Vantec NexStar 3 3.5 IDE to USB External HD Enclosure both do what they say they will do, at a reasonable price. Thank you New Egg.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsbought 2 getting 3 more

Pros: Got these a couple years ago to house drives from otherwise dead machines. They've been just as advertised. I have them running on a shelf below my desk top.. so there's no reason to bump them. The base keeps them up right without a problem.

Cons: Wish I'd gotten them in different colors.. hard to tell between Red and, well, red. But I do like them!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure

Pros: Does what it says & does it well. Very sleek, stable & attractive design. Solid construction.

Cons: A HDD can get pretty hot & this has no cooling options (outside of the aluminum case for heat spreading) so make sure you're not running it hard & for extended periods without letting it cooldown. Drive must be secured with screws into a brace that slides into the enclosure. Not a huge deal, but not quick either.

Other Thoughts: Was nice to be able to retrieve some very old data from an old drive of mine after moving over to a SATA-based system.

1 out of 5 eggsMisleading Discription

Pros: Looks Cool, and That its SEEMED like its a good buy. Thats till U opened the actual case and find ONLY for IDE and also ONLY usb1.1 Via 12mb transfer rate.

Cons: I am not going to sit here and sry when yes I should of looked more carefully at and did more research but do that my word just Go read it for yourself before buying a couple like I did, TO ME IMO, They purposely made it seem like This modle like the other exact same looking design version but it has included a IDE to SATA adapter I dont know what priece difference but anyway had it included but Only found it in fine print inside the instructions that NST-360U2-RD Only has a included adapter and not NST-360U2, and guess what else, NO refund or exchanges.. Like they knew.

Other Thoughts: So i bought a couple of lemons wrapped in Silk, not gonna be the last time I ll do some impulsed buy , but just a bit dissapointed because the trouble, I ll will never buy anyhing from newegg Since they are in my opinion "In on it" I mean cmon who the hell encloses IDE Hard drives these days, I can see maybe a third world country if they even exist anymore. again and especially VANTACK you keep makeing one time customers and see what happens. I will help spreed the good Rep do worry
