4 out of 5 eggsHit or Miss?

Pros: Essential if you are using large capacity drives for external media storage.

Cons: First ones on the market seem to be hit and miss in terms of quality.

Other Thoughts: I bought the first 5G as an upgrade to my two 2.0 BlackX docks so I could mount 4 TBs drives for video storage. It does this job admirably...until it fails.

Now this is not a 100% fail. The first one I bought is a solid workhorse and has been used heavily for over a year without issue.

When I went to buy the second one it was a fail within the first few months. Disconnections and reconnections of the drives when under a sustained transfer load. Thermaltake replaced the dock and the replacement failed right out of the box. The next replacement had a very minor external design change, shorter USB 3.0 cable (an unwelcome change) and a sticker claiming it is "+++ Upgraded". So far so good.

You cannot fault Thermaltake for their RMA process though, which is trouble free.

It should also be noted that I have influence over my company's hardware selection for Helpdesk tools. About 1-2 years ago I replaced the 2.0 docks we had with 3.0 docks to match up with the 3.0 ports on the new laptops from Lenovo. Of the 5 we purchased only 1 has so far demonstrated the connection/disconnection issue.

3 out of 5 eggsInitial problems, but solved with some self-troubleshooting.

Pros: Dual external drive storage through 1 USB 3.0 port. Easy to swap out drives with the push of a button (even though doing so while one drive is active, but the other has been safely ejected causes both drives to unmount).

Cons: Took some troubleshooting and internet digging to get a fix for my particular Mac setup.

Other Thoughts: I had similar problems as those who rated this item at 1 star, but I found a solution for my system and now it seems to work fine. I'm giving it 3 stars because it was really frustrating and required considerable online research and troubleshooting before I found my fix. The frustration is why it dropped 2 stars in my books. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.

First of all, I used it on a 15" Retina MacBook Pro (Late 2013) and it's presently connected to my 27" iMac (Late 2013, refurbished). Both run OSX Yosemite 10.10.3. I had the same problems with both systems where the drives would randomly drop with "Disk not ejected properly." I was using it to swap between four 3.5" HDDs: Two 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA II (c.2010), and Two 200 GB Western Digital WD2000 SATA I legacy drives (c.2004). After some troubleshooting I updated the firmware on the dock, which can be found at: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/products-model_support.aspx?id=C_00001756. This didn't entirely solve my problem, although drops did seem less frequent.

After reading some forums about other mult-bay devices (nothing specifically directed at this dock was particularly helpful) I came the topic of HDD and SATA controller instability with some HDDs. I tested the Seagates and WDs separately, and then together (one Seagate and one WD in the drive at the same time) and the ejection issue only occurred when the WD was mounted. I'm not sure if the issue is with the WD brand drives as a whole, or just because the WD2000 drives I have are now over a decade old and based on SATA I (but still ticking and work fine in single drive USB 2.0 enclosures).

In summary, if there is an issue with drives randomly being unmounted on a Mac first try updating the drive dock firmware (link provided above). If that doesn't work, try using a different HDD or using two drives that are the same make, model and capacity.

I hope that helps anyone who is having issues.

1 out of 5 eggsBad out of the box.

Pros: None

Cons: Drops connection as soon as you try to access the drive every single time.

Other Thoughts: I had a single bay dock from Thermaltake and loved it. That's why I ordered this dual dock without reading the reviews. I won't make that mistake again.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this dock.

Pros: Double bays
Not the worst construction

Cons: USB3 is completely unreliable
Even USB2 was a little bit iffy

Other Thoughts: Like others have said, the USB3 mode in this dock is basically nonfunctional. You apply a load to it and it cuts out within a minute.

I have been using an older version of this dock (but still USB3) at a clients site for 2.5 years now. I've had very few problems with it. It's cut out like... twice in the 100s of times I've used it so I thought that's what people were talking about in the reviews. No. Just... no.

It's bad. Really bad. And it cost me about 12 hours worth of work.

1 out of 5 eggsFrequent disconnects.

Pros: USB 3.0. Dual Drive. Ability to Hotswap. Plug and Play.

Cons: Frequent disconnects. Believe all the reviews that indicate this product disconnects frequently which obviously makes it entirely unreliable.

Other Thoughts: Took a chance hoping the other reviews that made similar claims of reliability and disconnects were overly excessive but quickly discovered they were not. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Please contact Customer Service to troubleshoot your issue.
We would like to distinguish possible factors as to why your unit is disconnecting,
and determine if a replacement of the unit is required.

1 out of 5 eggsRandomly drops HDDS

Pros: None

Cons: Totally unusable in USB3.0 mode. Seems like a pervasive problem. Randomly drops good drives mid-transfer. The drives are not going to sleep, it is reporting I/O errors on the USB bus and dropping the drive, then reconnecting.

Other Thoughts: I like the design, but the firmware/hardware has serious issues. Am currently testing the drive in USB 2.0 mode. We will see...

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsNeed a Recall

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: It's a wonder Thermaltake hasn't performed a recall on this particular product given that the large majority of people on this board have problems with the USB 3.0 transfer speed. This unit will not work in some computers, and in others will only work with USB 2.0. So far all I've used this for is partitioning and rehabilitating old drives over USB 2.0 when speed is not an issue.

Other Thoughts: This is the second dud of a product that I bought from Thermaltake so this seems to be a trend. I'm going to avoid this brand in future because of the poor experiences with this brand. Thermaltake should fix the product and issue a recall.

1 out of 5 eggsJust doesn't work

Pros: It looks nice

Cons: It doesn't work

Other Thoughts: I purchased one of these units and after it arrived I found that it would randomly disconnect and reconnect to the host computer. It would also disconnect during any data transfer. I RMA'd it back to Thermaltake and just received a replacement. The replacement does not randomly disconnect, however it does disconnect during larger data transfers. Any transfer over say 300 MB will fail. This is a shame because I have two of their 2.0 USB dual docks, and other than a bad power supply which they took care of they have worked flawlessly. I don't understand why they don't do something about this design, as I have now been reading of these failures going back a couple of years, and here I have a "fresh" unit from the manufacturer and it still has this issue. Such a waste of money.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality Check

Pros: ?

Cons: The first one I purchased was probably more that two years ago. I was moving at the time so it stayed the original box for over a year. After opening up the item and finally putting it to use, data transfer would just stop after a bout 10 seconds or so. I would never able to complete a full transfer. I read the review and did some research and saw that many people where having this same problem. I contacted Thermaltake since the item was till under warranty. They were willing to uphold the warranty, but I would have to pay for my own shipping. I was a bit disappointed seeing that so many people were having the same problem. This was not a unique problem to me. It seemed obvious that there was a flaw in design or quality check. Why should the customers have to pay for Themaltake fix a problem that is clear fault of their own. I never go around to actually sending it off for the RMA.

About a week ago, I though I would give it another shot since I have to replace a lot of my equipment after my car got broken into. I opened up the package today, and I am now in the process of requesting a refund. This time the drives aren't even being recognized.

I usually buy a lot of the Thermaltake PSU her on NewEgg.com, but I think I am going to start investing my funds in another company. Even though I have no problems with their PSUs, I didn't feel the love from their customer service with the dock stations so I shall look somewhere else.
