1 out of 5 eggsR/W Errors - bad internal controller board

Cons: Lasts 10 months then read/write errors start showing up. Swapped out drives and tested them inside a pc. Errors isolated to the board inside the enclosure. Do not buy if you care about your data!

Other Thoughts: Website reflects company's lack of support. Only method of contact; web page based 'e-mail form.

1 out of 5 eggsdisappointing

Pros: Good looking enclosure, has a solid feel, impressed me when I first owned it.

Cons: The power connector. When I first owned this unit, it frequently was slow to power up. Now that I've owned it eleven months, it often fails to start at all. The power light sometimes flickers between red and blue, and other times doesn't light at all.

Other Thoughts: I should have returned this to Newegg during the return period. My mistake. Judging from reviews, many other customers have had the same problem. This was my first Coolmax product, so I don't know whether it's typical. I've bought a replacement made by a competitor that I've gotten good products from in the past.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value

Pros: As others have pointed out, it's compact, it comes with a little stand to help make it stable, it has a proper on/off switch, it has both USB and eSATA connections, and it has a regular 12v barrel connection for power (very nice if you want to get a second powersupply for it).

Someone stated that the eSATA is slow, that has NOT been my experience. I've seen it read at a steady 75 MB/s (on a 4 GB file), and write at a steady 70MB/s (on the same file).

Cons: The eSATA cable is only about 2-1/2 feet long, not really long enough for ANYTHING I do. I don't recall the length of the USB cable, and if you're like me you won't care because you have a dozen of them laying around anyway.

Other Thoughts: I did notice one of my eSATA cables (not the one that came with it) didn't fit very tightly, and I didn't try it to see if it would work anyway. Despite the looseness of the one cable and the shortness of the one that came with the enclosure I still give this product 5 eggs because you can't beat the price for the performance. I would have paid as much even if it didn't come with an eSATA cable.

4 out of 5 eggsNo problems, nice enclosure

Pros: - Small and compact
- Entire HD tray slides out the front so you don't mess with the LED wires
- Dual blue/red LEDs light the front button, Blue = on, Red = read/write (blue LED isn't annoying)
- Std power plug (normal 12V barrel)
- Nice toggle on/off switch
- USB2.0 + eSata
- Runs surprising cool w/Hitachi Deskstar 1TB 7K1000.C, just slightly warm to the touch (after 12hrs straight of PC backup)

Cons: - USB & eSata cords are too short. If you put your enclosure on top of a desk they won't reach.
- eSata speed doesn't seem to be blazing fast, but faster than USB2.0 and Firewire so can't complain for the $.
- Initial read/write errors (but not enclosure's fault, see Other Thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I don't have any problems with my cords not seating like others do. The power cord actually seats itself with room to spare (before the rubber part of the plug touches the rear of the case, so I don't know why people are drilling out the back plate unless they have a different power adapter). I did have some initial read/write errors (eSata) with the enclosure – due to the drive randomly un-mounting itself when it felt like it. I tracked that down to my eSata drivers being over 3 years old. Once I installed the latest drivers off JMicron's website it's been smooth sailing. If you're having read/write problems (not power related) check your eSata drivers, most motherboard/PC companies don't post updates for them.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty Product

Pros: Compact & Smallish
Snap-on stand
Barrel Type Power plug
On Off Switch
Indicator Light
USB + ESata external interface.

Cons: Power plug doesn't "seat" correctly, I bored the case hole using a 3/8" drill as mentioned in another post but this did not fix things.
With power lights on and hard drive audible and working I can't get my several PC's to recognize it. Sometimes it is recognized but I get read/write failures and it is definitely NOT reliable.
May be a faulty circuit board.

Other Thoughts: I am dumping this and ordering up a different product. I ordered up two of these, one went to a friend who is having the same read/write problems. Bad Bad Bad

4 out of 5 eggsNice except for power connector

Pros: This is overall a very well constructed unit, except for the poorly designed power connector. The unit looks good, keeps my 640gb drive cool, is easy to assemble, and overall has a solid, high quality look and feel.

Cons: For the first few months I had no problems. But then the problems began with the power connector, as other reviewers have noted. For me, it meant that often when I powered up, the power light on the enclosure would continually flash on and off until I manually switched it off and back on. Finally it stopped lighting completely. I thought the unit had died, but disassembling and reassembling it seems to have fixed the problem (for now).

Other Thoughts: This is an impressive unit. It's disappointing that the power connector is an issue. It's otherwise a fine product. I'd haven given it five eggs if I hadn't had such consistent power issues.

2 out of 5 eggsit does the job but...

Pros: Nice look, came with the USB and eSata cables. I/O performance is as expected.

Cons: The power connector didn't get in fully and moving the case was causing the power to goes off (that's not good!). I found that the case round opening for the connector is a bit too small and prevent the connector too fully insert it. I could have returned it but it was obvious as removing the plastic back plate fixed the problem. I expanded the opening using a 3/8 "drill bit to open it more to get a perfect connection.

Other Thoughts: The USB connector on the external drive is the square type model not the mostly used USB connector type for small portable drives. Iwould be cool if they would supply a power connector to connect to a desktop power supply in addition to the AC adapter but this is just a thought. So this would make eSATA and power coming from the desktop, less cable mess.

Fast shipping as always with NewEgg even if coming from the USA, my keyboard order came from the Guelph, ON NewEgg location a day earlier, so fast!

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product, Good Price

Pros: -Nice solid enclosure that doesn't burn your hands.
-Has eSata and USB.
-All cables are included.
-Provides adequate protection for all practical purposes.
-Reasonably priced.

Cons: None I can find.

Other Thoughts: Whoever the reviewer was that thought a good enclosure should be able to withstand frequent drive swapping needs to get their head checked. If you need to do that, don't even use an enclosure, just use an adapter.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as good as it looks

Pros: Looks good. Thank whomever it's not really leather.
Is well constructed and should be hard to break.
eSATA , USB 2.0 works well.
Small, easily replaced power supply.
Comes with all cables needed.
Nice dual color LED in button. Not too bright.
NO fan. NO noise. NO dirt being drawn in.
Runs cool with a Samsung Spinpoint 1GB drive.

Cons: Power plug does not seat solidly.
Quality control problem.

Other Thoughts: Have not tried the one button backup yet.
I use a docking type enclosure for fast swaps.
This is designed for installing and leaving installed.

3 out of 5 eggsMostly harmless

Pros: Does what it's supposed to do. Provides an internal SATA drive with power, an eSATA or USB interface, and a modicum of protection from the big bad world. I'm using this with a 1TB Western Digital green drive on Linux, and what can I say? It works. Tried both eSATA and USB -- both work fine.

Cons: The enclosure is not designed for frequent swapping of the drive -- you have to partially disassemble the enclosure by removing screws from the back, sliding things first one way, then the other ... not difficult, but not convenient for someone who's planning to swap drives a lot.

2nd: a minor quibble, perhaps, but as others have pointed out, this thing is NOT made of leather. It's plastic that's colored and textured to LOOK like leather, but ain't leather. Now personally, I couldn't care less what it's made of, but the next guy might, so minus one egg for false advertising.

Other Thoughts: If you're planning to swap drives often, you might want to look elsewhere, otherwise this unit fits the bill.
