An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.

Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)

That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 550 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?

4 out of 5 eggsWas great for about 3.5 years of moderate use

Pros: Worked for what I needed. I probably didn't need 550 watts for the setup I used this in, but I wanted to be safe and it did great.

Cons: I believe this PSU is just not destined to last a long time.

Other Thoughts: I had it for around 3.5 years. It worked great for the longest time. I probably would leave my PC on for days at a time not usually more than a week at a time. But considering the amount of time it was in use during the 3.5 years, it was worth the money. Not the quietest, but worked great. Definitely can tell when it's about to go because the fan starts getting really loud before it craps out. Mine isn't dead totally, but I figured I'd replace it before I had to.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Power Supply

Pros: Works, powers my system just fine

Cons: Just RMA'd my second one, the fan dies, power supply overheats and pops, first lasted about 10 months 2nd one lasted about 7 months, this pc doesnt stay on 24/7 runs during the day and is off over night. Its only an AMD 2600 system with 2 hard drives and 2 cdrom drives, and an ATI 9600 pro, shouldnt be overloaded. I think its just bad fans I guess, who knows

Other Thoughts: Luckily the first was covered under New Egg RMA, second was covered under Coolermaster 2yr warranty, so as long as it pops under warranty its just a minor irritation. I have used probably close to 60 or 70 coolermaster power supplies in builds over the past few years, rarely have a problem, this particular one just doesnt seem to hold up for some reason

1 out of 5 eggsGreat price with rebate, had to RMA mine

Pros: 550 watts and a single PCI-Express video card connector and almost all the sata power connectors you will need.
mine came with a three year warranty

Cons: mine happened to be from the "first batch" that had a "fan bearing" issue. causing the fan to eventually strike the grill repetedly and then quit working.
just search the coolermaster forum and you will find that they recommend a RMA.
problem is they do not offer a "advanced RMA" so you need to find a replacement power supply till you get yours back.

Other Thoughts: maybe thats why there was a rebate.
roughly ten days from start to finish on my RMA.

3 out of 5 eggsOK PSU

Pros: Does what it needs to do.

Cons: First one was DOA, had to send it back to Newegg. It only has a 4-pin 12V CPU connector, so you'll need an 8-pin adapter if your motherboard needs an 8-pin 12V.

3 out of 5 eggsGood PSU, bad fan

Pros: Great power, runs my Q6600 at 3.2GHz folding 24/7. Also runs my overclocked evga 8800 GTS, which folds 24/7 at the same time. Nice black braided sheathing on the wires.

Cons: Brushless fan died after 14 months. If you hear a squealing sound and can't seem to track it down (mine would stop squealing when I would go to look for it) look at the PSU. My fan wasn't moving at all and the PSU got incredibly hot. Also I wish the SATA power connectors were divided out.

Other Thoughts: I got good use out of mine, still running it, just replaced the fan myself.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not waste your money on this power supply

Pros: Lot's of connections.

Cons: I've had two of these power supplies now. First one fan went bad and burned after 3 months. RMA'd it and saved the second one for when I rebuilt my computer. Put it in in October 4 months later, the fan crapped out.

Other Thoughts: I have to say, my opinion of Cooler Master has dropped after this one.

3 out of 5 eggsDead after 1 year

Pros: Was cheap

Cons: It died today, RIP. It was in use for about 1 year now its dead. Not sure of exact cause, but it made a pop noise, rig shut down and the magic smoke/smell came out.

Other Thoughts: Buy a better unit. Looking at reviews this is a common issue with this supply.

1 out of 5 eggsFan trouble

Pros: CHEAP 550W power supply, well-chosen connectors and plenty of them. Under actual loads, the supply performs very well. (and still does, even though it is now broken)

Cons: As other people have said, in much less time than you think, the fan will die. The first symptom is a grinding noise, and then it will die to a wimpery squeaking noise. Then the PSU will overheat. It's a cheap fan that cannot be replaced.

Other Thoughts: NEVER buy equipment with a sleeve bearing fan, especially if you can't open it up and replace it. I made that mistake when I bought this item retail, and now I'm stuck with a PSU that makes squeaking and grinding noises.

This PSU is also easy to install upside-down, which thankfully I avoided.

My lifetime on this PSU was just over a year. Buyer beware.
