An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.
Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)
That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 500 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?

Needs modifications
- Pros: Cooler Master is a known and trusted company. Price (with rebate) is fantastic for a 500W PSU. Most people only complain about noise, not performance.
- Cons: Everyone is right, it is loud. Basically there is a flaw with this PSU that when you install it and sit the computer upright, the fan clicks off the fan grill! Here is a very easy fix: remove the grill; add small washers to each corner; put grill back. TA DA! no more clicking.
- Other Thoughts: I was concerned about buying this PSU since most reviews (good and bad) complained about noise. However after modifying mine, Its very quiet, and stays cool. I don't think you should have to modify a BRAND NEW PSU, but for the price (after rebate)...
Superb
- Pros: This Power Supply Replaced my Dell 305 Watt one. It runs great and is quiet. I really love how easy it was to install and hook up. It did something that I never expected it to do, it dropped my case temp by 10 degrees Celsius.
- Cons: It makes my case vibrate a bit, probably the poorly made case by Dell though.
- Other Thoughts: Great buy, I highly recommend this.

poor tech support
- Pros: purchased RS-500-ASAA Jan 07, it's discontinued, worked well for about a year.
- Cons: PSU fain died after a year, (Jan08). Contacted tech support by live chat (impossible to get someone on the phone.) They sent me to web page for eRMA, took two weeks to get RMA. Sent PSU in to them (no cross shipping) 3 weeks ago and no reply at this point. This power supply was on a file server so fixing it quickly was critical.
Luckily an Ultra PSU that had been misdiagnosed as being bad was waiting to be shipped back on cross shipping. I contacted Ultra and was able to let them keep the charge on credit card and keep the misdiagnosed psu to get the server back up. Ultra techs are available with little wait by phone and resolve issues quickly.
Even though Coolermaster has a good product, the poor tech support experience with Coolermaster and the stellar support from Ultra has caused me to change to using Ultra exclusively for our clients. Before this I just bought from whichever reputable company had the best price/features for the required application.
Works great but loud.
- Pros: Price was good. Looks nice.
- Cons: loud. I should have just bought another Antec.
Solid Performance
- Pros: * Works as expected
* Plenty of cabling * Quiet.
- Cons: * None.
- Other Thoughts: * Converts AC to DC what can I say?
