An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.

Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)

That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 500 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?

1 out of 5 eggsNoisy

Pros: Adequate connections for a modest build

Cons: Noisy, fan always runs at high speed, even when pc is first turned on. The fan obviously does not adjust to the ps internal temperature.

Other Thoughts: I won't tolerate a noisy pc so this ps had to go.

5 out of 5 eggs5 years old and still goin' strong!

Pros: This PSU has been so good to me. I've owned it for 5 years and never had one problem. As with any product, you will encounter many negative reviews for good products. This is a good product, and a good company.

Cons: It wasn't free? HA HA ... always wanted to say that about a superb product

1 out of 5 eggspoor tech support

Pros: purchased RS-500-ASAA Jan 07, it's discontinued, worked well for about a year.

Cons: PSU fain died after a year, (Jan08). Contacted tech support by live chat (impossible to get someone on the phone.) They sent me to web page for eRMA, took two weeks to get RMA. Sent PSU in to them (no cross shipping) 3 weeks ago and no reply at this point. This power supply was on a file server so fixing it quickly was critical.

Luckily an Ultra PSU that had been misdiagnosed as being bad was waiting to be shipped back on cross shipping. I contacted Ultra and was able to let them keep the charge on credit card and keep the misdiagnosed psu to get the server back up. Ultra techs are available with little wait by phone and resolve issues quickly.

Even though Coolermaster has a good product, the poor tech support experience with Coolermaster and the stellar support from Ultra has caused me to change to using Ultra exclusively for our clients. Before this I just bought from whichever reputable company had the best price/features for the required application.

3 out of 5 eggsNoisy

Pros: Decently priced at the time of purchase. Capable of powering my system, although I did overshoot to compensate for upgrades (which I have yet to need.)

Cons: Fairly loud right out of the box. Begun clicking and low grinding noises occasionally after about 8 months daily use.

Other Thoughts: My first power supply for my first computer build. Unknowingly I purchased a lower cost PSU at the cost of quality. From now on my PSU purchases will be made with more importance on manufacturer and reviews.

2 out of 5 eggsRIP after 10 Months

Pros: It was cheap, met the requirements and wasn't ugly

Cons: It was cheap and it died young. Actually, it was the fan that died. Started making noises like a cat stuck in a blender making margaritas. At first I thought it was the CPU fan and changed that, but the noise continued so I tested the PSU fan by stopping it with a straw and the noise stopped too. Pulled the PSU, replaced with a 700w spare and checked the old unit. Looks like the fan bearings had almost no lube at all and they simply seized up. Can barely turn it by hand.

Other Thoughts: Didn't get it from NewEgg, which is my loss, because now I live 120 miles from the place I bought it and can't return it under warranty. Oh well...

Pros: Great Power supply for the money. Pretty efficient. Lots of connectors. 3 SATA connectors is great.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor Design Choice

Pros: Lots of power, solid construction, nice matte black finish, quiet.

Cons: Big problem: It comes with three SATA power connections, and they're all on the same wire, which is about 6 inches long. If you have a SATA optical drive and a SATA HD, this cable might not reach between them. I had to move my hard drive up in my case so that I could power both my DVDRW and my HD. If you need flexible SATA power on multiple devices, do not get this product.

Other Thoughts: Such a nice product marred by a really terrible design choice. I'm happy with the one I have because I got it to work, but I wouldn't buy another one.
