Fast and solid for video scratch and Time Machine
- Pros: I'm using this enclosure with a 750GB WD 3Gbps drive and it's absolutely amazing! I've got it partitioned as a backup disk for Time Machine and also for a scratch disk for use with Final Cut Express 4. The FW800 connection allows extremely fast transfer rates that work great with my high-def footage in FCE. It is much more efficient than using the internal drive in my iMac... faster transfer times and ZERO lag (except the initial spin-up, which only happens when I haven't used it for an extended period of time). The enclosure is solidly built, uses the one of the fastest chipsets on the market (Oxford 924DSB) and works perfectly for my application. The fan-less enclosure/drive runs cooler than my old airplane-loud LaCie and is so much faster it's ridiculous.
- Cons: The blue LED is a bit bright. I wouldn't mind being able to turn it off. The power plug doesn't seem to fit perfectly in the back of the unit... but it hasn't posed any operational problems whatsoever.
- Other Thoughts: Honestly, I was leery about buying this piece, having read such good reviews about OWC's Mercury Elite Pro enclosure. It was definitely worth it to me to save the cash and go with the Rosewill and it has FAR exceeded my expectations.
Quiet, blazing performance and elegant design. Bravo, Rosewill!!!
Hands down a fantastic purchase, LED is NOT an issue
- Pros: This enclosure gives you everything you are looking for in a 3.5" enclosure. SATA connection, a full array of connections in back. The enclosure itself feels very solid and sturdy. More importantly, having dealt with a bit of hardware in the past, I very much appreciate quality hardware encluded. You won't be likely to strip out any of the screws, although I didn't opt to test the limits. My unit actually came with extra hardware just in case.
No fan, so whisper quiet (depending on the drive you invest in).
- Cons: Absolutely none.
- Other Thoughts: Most importantly, in regards to people complaining about the bright LED, don't worry about it one bit.
If you're assembling an external hard drive, then you're no stranger to a screwdriver, and you just might* have some electrical tape. if the LED is too bright, then simply cover it with a little electrical tape till just enough light is showing.
Otherwise, the LED can be easily disconnected or COMPLETELY removed from the enclosure (the hardware holding it in place is attached via a simple screw). The power connection is a plug, not soldered, and extremely obvious.
I personally opted to remove it all together. I can just listen closely if I want to know if its on.

Randomly disconnects! Junk.
- Pros: Fast, sleek, good looking, lots of interfaces.
- Cons: Randomly disconnects after roughly 30 minutes or 100GB transferred, not sure which. This occurs with USB2 OR FW800 interfaced to Windows Vista, 7 (Gigabyte Mobo), and MacOSX 10.5 and 10.6 (Macbook Pro 17). I'm VERY disappointed. The drive I have installed (WD 1TB "green" edition) works beautifully when installed via SATA directly to my Gigabyte motherboard in the PC.
- Other Thoughts: Hoped for a firmware update or something from Rosewill, but there's nothing on their website.
Great Box
- Pros: I am having a great experience with this enclosure.. I use the Firewire 400 and 800, and USB 2.. quiet and solid. No complaints
- Cons: none so far
- Other Thoughts: been too busy to run it through extensive testing.. just a good experience
Great Enclosure
- Pros: Using with a Hitachi Deskstar 750GB drive and Mac Snow Leopard - VERY power wise and pretty quiet too. Got the silver so its almost like they were designed with each other in mind. Firewire and USB both work great (Firewire for Mac and USB for Ubuntu PRN). Case is tight fitting so not much vibration from the drive rattling the case components. Lots of screws (4 for the drive mount, 4 for the drive cover, 2 to hold the drive cage to the case, and 4 for the feet) so it is a pretty solid case.
- Cons: Only two screws in the bottom assembly where there are four holes (they do give extras tho). The LED is very bright as some have commented on but in the grand scheme its no biggie. I'll probably do something about that but it isn't annoying enough to overcome my inherent lazyness. Should have some rubber feet on the bottom to absorb drive vibration that gets transmitted to the surface where the enclosure is situated and dampen the resulting sound but again no biggie - I can get that at the dollar store.
- Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased so far. I was particularly impressed with the fact that Rosewill takes the time to comment back to Newegg customer reviews (it was one of the major deciding factors of whether or not to buy.)
