1 out of 5 eggsNot compatible with 3TB drives

Pros: Relatively fast USB 3 connection. Works with drives smaller than 3TB.

Cons: The dock is not compatible with 3TB hard drives. It will not recognize drives formatted using other connections (e.g. internal sata), and a drive formatted in this dock will not work in any other system unless you use the same model of dock.

1 out of 5 eggsSTAY AWAY - AWFUL

Pros: NONE AT ALL

Cons: Never worked. Period. At first I thought it wouldn't work correctly because I was using it on an old Windows XP USB 2.0. pc. Finally had a opportunity to test on several other newer machines and it didn't work on any of those either. It doesn't even power on now.

Other Thoughts: Will stick with Thermaltake BlacX from now on.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked pretty fast as opposed to some usb 2.0 sticks I've used.
Great price.
Separate power supply (not powered by another usb 3.0 slot)

Cons: 3.5" drive could've fit a bit more snug for my comfort.
Otherwise, no cons.

Other Thoughts: I needed for simple back up and formatting of internal drives. I had a single HDD in use on this for about 20 minutes and was done. Did its job as expected including a format. I wouldn't recommend for continuous or regular use as I see some folks have. At that point, I would just mount it in case.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Concept, poor quality

Pros: I like the concept of inserting any external SATA disk / storage device and USB 3.0 support

Cons: Dock Station died 9 months into very minimal use. Power button sticks and even if button is not sticking, when power button is pressed power turns on then immediately off. could be Dock or PowerSupply. Don't care. The old USB 2.0 Dock is far superior in quality.

Other Thoughts: It will work for a time but with poor quality it's not worth purchasing. Buy the 2.0 or another vendor's 3.0 item.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks in 1 of 3 computers

Pros: Works well in the one computer it works on.

Cons: Doesn't seem to work in most of my usb 3.0 computers. Drive spins up, windows bonks indicating something is being installed but the drive never shows up in two of my machines with usb 3.0 (ASRock motherboards)

Other Thoughts: I have a few year old thermaltake blacX that continues to work over esata. Was hoping to get one working on usb 3.0. Not sure why I can't get this to work in two of three computers.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Recognized Using XHCI in Ubuntu 13.10

Pros: Compact, well-made, works somewhat as a USB 2.0 device with XHCI disabled.

Cons: Is not recognized with XHCI enabled. Only works as a USB 2.0 device.

Other Thoughts: I bought this docking station to replace two Rosewill RX35-AT-SU3 USB 3.0 external hard drive enclosures I bought back in 2010. At the time I bought them, I had no USB 3.0-capable computers, but I thought I was being smart buying something that would be forward-compatible. Wrong.

A couple of weeks ago I built a machine that supports USB 3.0, and neither of the Rosewill external drives were recognized unless I disabled XHCI in the BIOS and let EHCI handle them as USB 2.0 devices. I still had to use the Disks utility to mount them.

I was thinking I could get this docking station to replace both those external enclosures and be set up with USB 3.0, hoping that this docking station was running more modern firmware and would do okay.

No such luck. It does work fine with XHCI disabled, but of course only at USB 2.0 speeds, and none of my other USB 3.0 drives gets the benefit of USB 3.0 with XHCI disabled.

Rosewill doesn't appear to have any tech support links on their site, either, so you either RMA the item or live with it not working.

If you're running Ubuntu and hoping to use USB 3.0, I wouldn't bother with this docking station.

2 out of 5 eggsBasically works, but format of 3TB hard drive seems proprietary or corrupted such that it cannot be read in other docks from other manufacturers

Pros: Basically works as expected. That's always a pro.

Cons: The 3TB drive which still shows up fine on this dock, shows up as uninitialized on any other dock I use from any other manufacturer. I had read something about them doing something propriety to support 3TB drives with this dock back in the day, and it seems to be true, now that I'm trying to use the drive in another dock. I could be s.c.r.e.w.e.d. if this dock ever fails. Unacceptable. There's no reason a 3TB SATA drive that runs fine in one SATA dock shouldn't work fine in another. So much for standards.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you very much for purchasing this unit.
We strive to provide the most reliable and highest quality products to our customers.

Please try the following.

1. Backup your data
2. Remove the current drive
3. Place a new drive replacement
4. Test to see if data is locked to that enclosure only

If yes contact us for warranty support
If no issue may be tied to the current HDD.

3 out of 5 eggsNot a good choice for huge drives

Pros: Works as expected with a 2TB drive I have. Power button on the top front for easy access. Great price.

Cons: The specs say "Up to 3TB". They actually mean "Up to, but not including, 3TB". But the 3TB drive, which is formatted and has data on it, just shows up in Disk Management utility as an unkown GPT partition and everything is great out (can't assign drive letter, etc.)

Other Thoughts: Windows 8.1.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast USB 3 transfers. Fits 2.5 and 3.5 drives. Overall design seems fairly sturdy. Solid eject button.

Cons: Supplied USB cable could be longer, but not a dealbreaker. Took off one egg for the power button. Seems to be a soft button. I would prefer it to be a hardware power switch. I think it would be less likely to fail.
