Icy Dock is proud to introduce a brand new item to its innovative product line, the MB981U3-1SA 2.5"/3.5" SATA & IDE Hard Drive Docking Station with SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface. This device features a direct connection through the top slot for 2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard disk and solid state drives, allowing a user to access their drive via SuperSpeed USB 3.0. Its 2-part anti-dust cover protects internals when a small 2.5" SATA drive is used.

In addition, the detachable adapter is released from the bottom of the dock via 2 small lockable switches, making it possible to run 2.5"/3.5" IDE drives and SATA drives simultaneously. This product also has other useful elements, including power buttons on the dock and adapter that double as status LEDs, an easy to press, and large drive eject button. ICY DOCK MB981U3-1SA gives the term of docking station a whole new meaning.

  • newegg Versatile Device ICY DOCK MB981U3-1SA features a completely screw-less / tool-less design for any type of drive. It allows docking of 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDD & SSD connected via USB 3.0, and can connect 2.5"/3.5" IDE HDD connected via USB 3.0 using the removable adapter.
  • newegg 2-part Anti-dust Cover The anti-dust cover on the top is divided into 2 pieces, so that if a 2.5" drive is inserted, only the smaller portion of the cover opens up, leaving the electronics inside safe from dust and debris.
  • newegg Detachable Adapter 2 locking switches hold the detachable adapter in place when used as a dock. Once the adapter is removed, IDE drives can then be used, as well as both types of SATA drives. 3.5" IDE drives connect to the labeled input, and is powered using the 4-pin power jumper cable. 2.5" IDE drives connect to the labeled input, and can be powered using only USB power. Using SATA drives with the disconnected adapter is the same as when they are directly docked through the top slot.
  • newegg USB 3.0 Connectivity This device features Plug & Play USB 3.0 with up to 5 Gb/sec transfer rates, and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0 for quick connection for any computer system.
  • newegg More Features Other practical and user-friendly features include: built-in compartment to hold 4-pin jumper, USB bus power for 2.5" drives, low profile power adapter for 3.5" drives, and included 4-pin power jumper cabled provided for use with 3.5" IDE drives. Great for DIY users and IT Professionals.

5 out of 5 eggsWas easy to setup

Pros: Very simple to use . I was able to finally see what was on some old HDD that i could not use to boot. I found some old pictures that were very dear too me from 2006. This alone was worth the cost.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: i would recommend this product .

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect!

Pros: Ridiculously easy installation, simply plug it in. Fast speeds, easy use, and no issues so far.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: Very handy tool for figuring out what old hard drives laying around might actually be. Or if a machine dies you can always pull the hard drive out and pull the data off of it using this device.

5 out of 5 eggs3RD Purchase of these and have had NO problems with all 3

Pros: 1) Fast USB 3.0 which is a must when transferring large amounts of data
2) Includes an IDE Adapter for those older Drives
3) Built in SATA
4) Nice design and well made
5) Blue LED light on front switch
6) Nice Retail Package
7) Every computer that we have tried this in works
8) Does NOT drop signal like many other Docking Stations seem to do
9) Good support from Icy Dock
10.) The Dust Cover on the top completely covers the whole interior unlike other Docking Stations which do not cover the actual SATA connector allowing dust to get into it.

Cons: 1.) The IDE adapter is a little flimsy and can be a pain setting up physically but it does work.
2.) The Molex Power Cable for the IDE is fairly short

Other Thoughts: Great unit and the IDE is just an Extra Bonus. The unit seems to be quality made and even includes a built in dust cover. A must for any Tech or Computer Nerd! I have used up to 4TB Hard Drives in this unit. I have not personally tried anything larger.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: Works as expected. Reasonably fast transfer rates with USB 3.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Handy little gizmo to have sitting at your desk. I have a large "archive" drive on one of my PCs that I Backup all the house's other PCs to. Handy to have this bay to accept most standard drives.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Customer Service

Pros: Easy to operate
Amazing customer service

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: My USB connector broke off from the motherboard from storing with the cord attached for over a year. I contacted IcyDock not expecting much, but they immediately sent me an RMA and covered shipping costs to take a look. They fixed it promptly and sent it back, which by far surpasses any customer service experience I've had before. I would not hesitate to purchase from them again because of it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Dock

Pros: Very easy to set up right out of the box! Windows 7 mounted my SATA and IDE drive beautifully when I powered on the dock! Of course I only connected one drive at a time. Fits 2.5 and 3.5 drives perfectly as described, the 2.5 dust cover works better than it looks in the picture.

Cons: The molex cable for IDE is kind of short, and you have to remove the adapter from the dock itself to connect IDE. I just put my IDE drive in the dock with the adapter on top, but this requires a little work.

Other Thoughts: I bought this dock so I can get information from old hard drives without having to have a middle machine. This device accomplishes this feat without any problems whatsoever!

I noticed some people are having issues getting IDE to mount. I am running a 3.5 WD 320GB 7200RPM IDE drive with the Cable Select Jumper setting from the hard drive with no problems. I am also running Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit connected through USB 3.0. I also want to mention, power on the dock AFTER connecting the drive if you haven't been doing so already. Powering on the dock before connecting might cause the drive not to mount properly if it even mounts at all. This also goes for SATA drives, and all other docks out there.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't Work For IDE

Pros: Very Fast SATA To USB 3.0 when you use a SATA Hard Drive 60 MB/S

Cons: Unable to access my IDE Hard Drive, Windows 7 can detect the adapter but the Hard Does not work. I tried 2 Hard Drives same issue, Both of them worked O.K using my old adapter.

Other Thoughts: If you really need this for IDE and SATA Hard Drives don't buy it.

4 out of 5 eggsBackups made easy

Pros: Reads both SATA and IDE hard drives that are 2.5" and 3.5", USB 3.0, no trouble reading any brand yet (so far have only used WD and Maxtor IDE drives)

Cons: Separate adapter for reading IDE drives instead being built right in to the dock.

Other Thoughts: I got this because I had a number of old hard drives sitting around that weren't good anymore other than for some storage. The main problem was that they are all IDE drives and it's so hard to find a docking station that reads them anymore. I like this because it reads both IDE and SATA drives. The only problem I have with it is that it's a separate adapter that comes out of the bottom for those. It would've been nicer if it was a 2 bay system and one that holds IDE and one that holds SATA. There was one similar to a setup like that, but I didn't like the way it was made. This was my next choice, and so far, everything is going well.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Product is Great, The Service & Support is Grand!

Pros: Easy to use, can attach any SATA or IDE hard drive, fast on USB 3.0 connection.

Cons: None that I can think of other than that the USB 3.0 cable that comes with it could be a little bit longer.

Other Thoughts: I bought one of these two years ago and it quit working a few weeks ago. I figure it was out of warranty, so I ordered another one from Just for the heck of it I tried to purchase a replacement adapter for the original unit and ICY Dock Tech Support told me it was still under warranty and they reviewed my troubleshooting, asked me to try a couple of things (which I did, but the adapter unit was indeed dead) and as soon as I sent them the shipping tracking number from the return, they sent me a replacement adapter !! Great service and support !!
